 | | | Hasbro Third Quarter Profits Rise 8.8 Percent on the back of Transformers | | Posted on 10-19-2009 at 04:44 PM by Sol Fury | | Hasbro today reported a strong third quarter performance, Yahoo news reports. Hasbro's 3Q profit rose 8.8 percent compared to last year, and the profits are linked largely to toys sales tied to GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, alongside a selective rollback of the 3% price rise introduced this year to offset the rising cost of oil. The article goes on to note that Hasbro's main competitor, Mattel, posted a loss last week, and that all signs are in place for a strong 4Q holiday season performance.

NEW YORK – Hasbro Inc, the nation's second biggest toymaker, said Monday its profit rose 8.8 percent in the third quarter, helped by lower costs and slightly higher sales of Transformers and G.I. Joe toys.
Hasbro said its earnings rose to $150.4 million, or 99 cents per share, for the three months ended Sept. 27, up from $138.2 million, or 89 cents a share, a year ago.
The latest results top the average analyst estimate of 93 cents a share, as measured by a survey by Thomson Reuters.
The Pawtucket, R.I.-based company said its joint venture with Discovery Communications hurt earnings per share by 3 cents.
Revenue fell 1.7 percent to $1.28 billion from $1.20 billion a year ago and missing analysts' estimates of $1.32 billion.
Hasbro said North American sales reflect stronger sales of toys for boys, but revenue was weighed down by weakness in girls, preschool and the games and puzzles categories.
| SPLIT LIP:
Yay! Hasbro doing good is always good news.
Tell_Story:
Lord knows I picked up Leader Optimus and Jetfire when they went down to $35.00 last week. These are the only ROTF I have so far. The price mark up was a huge turn off, but their plan is working. Now they're not selling Deluxe's for $7.88 and you feel like you're getting a deal. Now they're selling for $10.00 straight up and now that's the bargain.
Ash from Carolina:
Lets hope they can move a ton of GI Joe and Transformers in the fourth quarter because I don't know about the other stores but my local store is way over stocked on the same waves. Not that there are any Revenge of the Fallen figures that I want but I was wanting some of the upcoming Joe stuff without having to use an on-line retailer.
Paladine:
Maybe my stock will go up, and if so I'll sell it at a profit and invest in something more profitable.

Lower costs and higher sales. That's your poor Animated quality control and Movie toys being sold by the bucket-load, right there. Megatronwp38:
Good news! Now use those profits to make some good new Classics/Universe Type figures.

freezowave:
They mention lowered costs, but not the higher prices that have come with their lowered costs. There has been a 10-20% price increase across the board.
Add 10% in lowered costs (total guesstimate) to the 10-20% in increased prices and they are clearing 25% or so in added profits on that end.
Powersa:
HAS stock price dropped
Thundershot:
Hey, it means more Transformers for us!
Sol Fury: Leave the virtues / vices of the various world economic systems at the door please guys. It treads dangerously close to our rule on politic discussion.
Thanks!
I'll second / third / fourth that motion about it always being good to see Hasbro doing well. As long as the line does well, it means we'll have plenty of new toys coming down the pipeline. Like them or not, more product dramatically increases the likelyhood of everyone finding something that they like.
Bumblethumper:
It should come as no surprise that profits are up over the same period last year, they have two major blockbuster movies pushing sales this year.
Actually I'm impressed that they still did pretty good last year even without that kind of promotional push. What did they have last year?
HighBeam:
Yay! hopefully this means MOAR good toys Infosaur:
Hmmm, and to think, I didn't even buy any TF's this quarter.
Do profits from the licencing to IDW count?

Maybe if they had some DCUC figures available, instead of doing this "rare figure crap" they pulled with Waves 8, 9 and 10, they wouldn't have had as bad a year.
Transformers are quite easy to find in comparison, especially Wal-Mart waves.
iceburn9:
Great news.
Keeping my fingers crossed that they will use some of those profits to make a ROTF Overload, Scrapper or Hightower.
Deadend:
Yay. Further proof that Hasbro stock is win, whereas mattel stock won't be for awhile longer.
This can only mean great things ahead for all their ventures. =D

Given the lead times on toys, all the molds (and likely even all the repaints) for RotF have been designed already. They're working on whatever follows RotF now.

Ash from Carolina:
Between GI Joe, Transformers, Marvel, and Star Wars it would be a bit shocking if Hasbro couldn't squeeze out a bit of profit even in bad times. Most of the heavy hitters in the boys toys belong to Hasbro so unless the other companies can step up their game with better toys I expect Hasbro to be the most likely to show a profit.
