General Motors To Cease Production of GMC Topkick, Fate of Ironhide Uncertain

Posted on 06-08-2009 at 02:25 PM by Tim Formas under Transformers Movie (Just Movie) (All Transformers Movie News)

According to The Wall Street Journal, General Motors will be ceasing production of the GMC Topkick by the end of July. Unable to find a buyer for their medium-duty trucks, General Motors decided to end production on the GMC Topkick and Chevrolet Kodiak in its effort to streamline its operations. The end of the GMC Topkick presents an issue for future Transformers movies beyond Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, as Ironhide's vehicle mode is the Topkick. Will Ironhide simply choose another vehicle mode or will the people responsible for the movie just elect to keep him out of future movies? With the second movie only about to hit theatres, we may not know the answer to that for quite awhile.

Crappy, but not surprising given the state of GM.
Spiderus Prime
Now Ironhide is scanned a Van, or a Offroad Vechinel.

You know what this means:

Ironhide is going to have to die in the movie. Just like Jazz and Pontiac.

Yup most likely but I don't think they have time to add that in.

Doesn't mean Ironhide will be out of future movies just because the vehicle is being discontinued. Odds are he'll scan a new mode, turn into a cameo-only character, continue being a major force, or just be in Robot Mode only.

Or die.
shibamura_prime
I'll take the Ironhide TopKick off their hands if they don't need it anymore... >_>

Those WSJ guys are mean... you can hardly read anything without being a subscriber. Well, business is business...

Hahahaha
Seeker24
I dont think it really matters. i dont see a reason why they cant hold onto a few Topkicks. But it would be a good excuse to change his alt. mode.
Ethereal
Bummer. I'm sure he'd find another new mode to scan, though I can't concieve of a reason why.
Tekfreak
I dont get it. Why not just have dreamworks or michael bay or whoever just buy a few b4 production ceases and store them for the next movie? Unless that breaks some kind of contract with GM that they have to have the latest models of GM autos...
Santoanderson
Who knows. I bet Bay kind of regrets jumping into bed with GM. The Corvette Centennial Concept will never see the light of day.
MegaHavok
Will GM even exist by the time tf3 is being made?
DarthP00P00
Ballsack.

I love Ironhide's alt mode.
The only thing I would find suitable for him would be...
1. a bloody battleship
2. monster truck
3. waffle
Pepsiman98
in tf3 why cant they just use the same vehicle they used in the last 2 films? you know, reusing the same exact truck they've been using, or do they have to buy a new one for each film?
Alienbot
Just pick another big black pick-up truck.
optimus124
I don't think this will pose a problem. They got about 2 or 3 of those on set anyway, so there isn't a real good reason for him to switch modes. Unless Ford gets in on it and he becomes an F350
Bgrngod
Makes a kick-ass alt-mode. Makes a crappy consumer vehicle.

That truck was darn near the definition of "excessive". (At least the one's that looked like Ironhide) No surprise at all.
harrismonkey
So this means they're going to go dismantle all top kicks in the world right and there's no way he could keep the same mode.

What's sad is the idea that they MAY change it just because or corporate sponsorship.

I think the more interesting question really is what would happen if GM really did go totally belly up (which is unlikely)?

Ironhide'll just ask Ratchet if he can use his alt-mode.
WarMachine73
We had to put up with Jar Jar Binks for 3 episodes of Star Wars, I think it's safe to assume that everything we need to keep Ironhide going for another movie is tucked away on a hard drive as well. I don't know why people are even bothering to question this move by GM and it's effect on the movies. This is the 21st century, anything can be digitally recreated. There is NOTHING to worry about.

F-250 time!!

Yeaaaaaaaahhhhh no. The ones already made will still be sold and such, it's just they won't be producing any more... him keeping the same alt mode isn't out of the question, and the thought that "they're going to go dismantle all top kicks in the world (even the ones sold) is a bit much and a downright bizarre idea, on the verge of overreacting really.

But that sucks. Ironhide is my fav character.

And what about Ratchet guys? No one is making a big deal about that...Hummer was sold and is no longer GM...if it's a GM only movie...that can't use ratchet either
weaponx82
Ironhide is going nowhere. They'll either pic a new alt mode or buy a few more for the next movie from the ton that are out there. We see people rebuild cars that are half a century old and make them look brand new all the time. They'll have no problem throwing some spit and polish on some top kicks that are only a year or so old for the third movie if they don't hold on to the handful they have for ROTF.
Shadow25
I'm sure there will be a few Topkics left over, so I doubt this will have an effect. If it does, he'll just get a new alt mode. I doubt this is something to kill the character over, but then again, Ironhide would probably have an epic death.

They still hold the license for Hummer itself.
Bumblethumper
Outside of any unwanted implications on future TF movies, good riddance. From what I've heard that heap gets worse mileage than a hummer.
Motor_Master
This brings up an interesting point for Ratchet as well, since GM plans to sell the Hummer line to a Chinese company.

Realistically they would most likely give them new alt modes and explain it away with a one liner in the third movie, if at all (assuming they are in the third movie). Equally possible is they use this as an opportunity to bring in two new characters. Perhaps First Aid or Pipes for Ratchet and Springer or Roadbuster for Ironhide.

Agreed. I am not sure why everyone thinks that he needs to be the top of the line model. In fact, i would figure that all of the Autobots would want alt modes that make them more conspicuous, not less.

Such heroic nonsense?
Ephland
Why would this have any effect on movie-canon Ironhide? All they need is one or 2 models, which I'm fairly certain they already have.
grimlock1972
well i see 3 possibilities :

1. Ironhide simply scans a new alt mode, I judge this as second most likely
2. Ironhide get killed early in TF3 i find this unlikely
3. they buy up enough Topkicks to use for TF3 , which this is most likely what will happen as they would not need many as normally most of the abuse a TF takes in the TF movies has been in Robot Mode, so 5 or 6 tops would be all they would need if that many
Darth Rodimus
have any of you seen the Chevy Kodiak, it look just the same
edit:read the thing wrong, it is both the topkick and Kodiak, well maybe be can a F-250 then

Actually, if you have seen most of the trailers, there is a scene where Ironhide Drives through a burning wall.

Lets face it man, it's a bay film, and with all the stunts there are, I doubt those 1 or 2 trucks will survive. My oppinion? I've always thought there would be a chance Ironhide dies in the Movie continuity. My fear is growing.
kjeevahh
NeilD83
well can they just make the GMC Topkick for the movie, not for dealerships; i mean come on they built the back ratchet's ambulance mode from scratch. dont kill him off in the next movie michael bay!!!!!!

There is a reason for that the are sister vehicles the Kodiak is the Chevy version of the GMC Topkick and both are being discontinued
deathonacracker
The Topkick is still a GM property right? even if they stop producing them, it doesn't mean he cant still be one... i mean, i get that GM wants to promote vehicles they want people to buy, but that's a little contradictory considering they gave Sideswipe a vehicle mode that you CAN'T buy.

why the hell does he have to change alt modes? the only reason i could see them changing it is because the alt mode wont be available to film...but don't they have a few they can keep already?

killing him off because of this would be horribly lame and one of only a hand full of legit reasons I've found so far to complain about this franchise. but i wont until we know for sure.

People miss the point.

Just because a brand is done, doesn't mean all Topkicks are getting trashed.

The one they use currently isn't some home owned vehicle, and I'm sure it doesn't have many miles, and can last for many years. It will outlast how many ever TF movies there are (which I bet is the magic number 3, as in trilogies as everyone in Hollywood thinks they need to do.)

The TF movie Topkick isn't going anywhere just because the brand died. Heck, if I owned one, it's not like GM comes to my house and says, "we discontinued that, so you're not allowed to own it anymore."
Bgrngod
Most likely there is already a deal inked for the 3rd movie so this isn't really a concern about how it could be impacted. And if there isn't, we can be sure Bay will ink a similar deal with another company. There is no chance in hell TF3 will get made without saving money through a car deal of some sort.

I just hope he could get to sign several car companies. I'd freak out seeing a WRX or a Lancer turn into Bay-bots. Even better if they duked it out against each other (the Lancer of course being the Decepticon/bad-guy).

I think you've missed the point. The whole point of putting them in there is to advertise them so they can SELL them. Advertising a dead line is pointless.
Shockscream
The vehicle will still be around. If TF just existed as car advertising I would be worried. But it isn't and so I'm not.

Maybe Ironhide and Ratchet just won't appear in vehicle mode next time round.
Takara_destron
I hope they don't do anything to him in the next movie, Ironhide is my favourite movie Autobot.
poorboy8u
So just because gm is disappearing that means that the topkick will just NOT exist? They couldn't just buy one or two extra and store them? Come on...
Bendimus Prime
I bet he'll be written out of the third film. That almost happened anyway since the first leaked treatment (which was unused, but real) for Transformers 2 had Ultra Magnus in place of Ironhide.
