Behind The Scenes Of The Birdmen Stunt For Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

Posted on 06-01-2011 at 09:36 AM by SilverOptimus under Transformers Movie (Just Movie) (All Transformers Movie News)
Director Michael Bay selected a group of precision skydivers to perform stunts in Transformers: Dark of the Moon after seeing the extreme sportsmen on '60 Minutes' one night. The show featured footage of the skydivers jumping off mountains with the help of wingsuits, which allow the guys to essentially fly.

NoleScream
Awkward man hug at the end. LOL
Barricade24
Cool. I bet that was both fun and scary at the same time.
SeekerofTruth20
That had to be one of the most awesome things Ive seen in a while. Can't wait to see it in the movie!
Johnarnace
some new footages here.
legolas grof
dang that was AWSOME!
tehKOREANdude
that was ridiculously badass. i retract any statements about the goofiness of those suits
T16skyhopp
Wow I totally didn't think those were real.
SPLIT LIP
I love how... freaking awesome they look doing that. It's a combination of holy-fuck-coolness and hilarity at these little flying people just gliding by.
[Wing_Saber-X]
Respect to the brave men who risked everything to make it one memorable scene.

well he did find something awsome and fit it into the story there like "stealth wingsuits"

cannot wait to see this movie! man that looks so amazing
Shizuka
The most awesome thing that can be said is that this was a real stunt and not CGI. As much as I like CGI, people abuse it and refuse to just do it themselves. ANd we people who see this behind-the-scenes stuff can go into the film on the 29th and be even more stunned because we know it's real and not CG.
Starscreamer69
Am-a-zing. Cannot wait to see how this turns out in 3D!

A few pats too many.

Okay it is cool. But I bet I cost alot of money (helicopter camara and stuff) for what a few minutes into the movie?
He could spend it on CGI of Jolt LOL
Night Flame
Did we kill it already? The video in the link appears to be dead.

EDIT: Nevermind. My computer was hosed up. Just saw it. CRAZY.

@ 2:11 is amazing!!! New footage!

I'm so glad Bay decided to go down the realism route. It looks great and the fact that the stunt was STILL filmed in 3D it the icing on the cake.

I don't care what anyone says... Michael Bay is the king of action movies.

Tomboticon
That was excellent. I hope people don't assume it's CGI, these guys put their necks out for this movie.
TFfan08
Can't wait to see this scene in 3D

My understanding is that they are used for a specific purpose in the movie, relative to the story.

So, yeah.
caldo15
in the footage you see two of the birdmen get hit and caught on the osprey
ElectricPrada09
I bet those little bits of awesome new footage will be in the TV spot that is supposed to be out today or something. It was titled birdmen spot or something like that.
Spoiler
Ever since that filming footage we saw a few months ago, I have been eagerly awaiting more shots of this. I remember seeing those suits all the time on stuff like discovery and history channel, and thought: "how cool would that be to try it!"

Do they remind anyone else of flying squirrels? Seriously, all they need are little tails to wiggle around as they're gliding.

So cute!! XD

For what it's worth, they worked it in quite well in my opinion.

Spoiler! They're used to help send soldiers in to help infiltrate the Decepticon-held city. They're small and agile targets that the Decepticons have an extremely difficult time locking onto as they're used to much larger prey.

Those suits were actually developed based on the flying squirrels.

Here's a video of these guys doing it in Norway.

I agree.

But it will be fun, I'll go to the cinema with my Brother [a small-scale Bayhater], he'll stare at the scene, give a brief laugh of mockery and say: "Dude, so unrealistic!", I'll naturally answer: "That was actually filmed."

I can't wait to see his face, man, I JUST CAN'T WAIT.

And on a sidenote, this video only proves that Michael Bay is a full-blown nutball, trying to do everything INSANELY REALISTIC on a Transformer movie.

I wouldn't be surprised if they tell us that Michal Bay tried to build all Transformers and make half of them murderous and other half good guys while filming the first movie.

That is some crazy-@$$ stuff from a practical standpoint, but there was one thing that caught my eye. Matthew Butler (credited as "Visual Effects Supervisor", for Digital Domain) is interviewed briefly regarding the scene, so although it may not be official confirmation, it's my guess that DD will be working on that sequence, or at least part of it. Perhaps some digital doubles, digital enhancements, camera helicopter removal and such. And of course giant falling burning Ospreys.

And we even got some official shots from the film, as opposed to "just" filming. Extended Osprey falling and guys dodging the whilst flying.

he's saying the only mammals that truly fly, are bats.
Yggdrasil
That will the one of the most badass scenes in the movie.

And that's coming from a guy that hates military scenes in the Transformers movies!
dwong1207
That was a neat little documentary. Great find Michael Bay!! Looking forward to watching TF3!

Totally didn't notice that one guy falling while on fire, flailing around. Nice detail there.

also when they show the falling burning plane into the camera, one guy gets slammed in his back by the back part of the tail wing while the plane is falling right above/toward him & at the same exact time another guy slams himself into the back rotor engine housing while it's on fire while trying to avoid the falling plane
Godziboy1993
Damn that was awesome! I wish I had the balls to do that. Gonna look great seeing it in 3D!
