For those who missed the 2008 Academy Awards, the Transformers movie was nominated for three categories: Achievement in Sound Mixing: Kevin O’Connell, Greg P. Russell and Peter J. Devlin, Achievement in Sound Editing: Ethan Van der Ryn and Mike Hopkins and Achievement in Visual Effects: Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Russell Earl and John Frazier.
Unfortunately the Transformers movie fell short in receiving awards for all three categories, losing to The Bourne Ultimatum for Achievement in Sound Mixing and Achievement for Sound Editing, and The Golden Compass for Achievement in Visual Effects.
A major highlight to the night, however, is the opening sequence of the awards show which featured Megatron, Starscream, and Bonecrusher. Please click Discuss to join in on the current discussion!

Say… WHAT? Curse you Compass!!!! And that goes to the Oscars too for not awarding Transformers!!!!
On the plus side, I liked the bit with Bonecrusher, Megatron and Starscream.

Maybe there wouldn't be such shock if the myth wasn't running rampid in the fandom that the box office meant that everyone in the world was totally happy with the film except for a few G1-geezers. The myth has been repeated so many times that some people will never even let it enter their mind that maybe the people who voted for the award just didn't like the look for whatever reason.
Or maybe it's an Ironman factor because some of the trailers for that or the Super Bowl special trailer sort of made Transformers look out dated already with Ironman's sleek look compared to more jumbled look of the Transformers. If given a sports car would you chose something like the cars from Mad Max or would you go for the sleek sports car? So maybe everyone wasn't as positive about jumbled as we made the world out to be.

Well, seeing a shoe fit on another foot can be quite gratifying.

Bottom line… Transformers will be remembered as a landmark VFX film and Golden Compass will be forgotten. ILM's body of work speaks for itself, awards or not. Transformers 2 is already a highly anticipated film and will probably be 100 times better than the first. Mr.Bay will settle for nothing less than AWESOME!

I saw The Golden Compass, and while I enjoyed the movie (much more than its arch-nemesis on the "Digging for Religious Allegories" front, Narnia, which made me angry for some reason) the talking animals weren't as convincing as the 'bots and 'cons in The Movie. And I'm not being biased, either!
Guess the Academy didn't want to feel "guilty" or "ashamed" by giving a distinguished award to an extended toy commercial. They can give it to something based off a book, though. Books are more high-brow, you know!

I was appauled at the VFX loss for Transformers. The Bourne movie did do a great job on sound work so hats off to them. I can live with them winning it. The Golden Compass though, I have never been pissed at an Academy Award in my life until now. I would have lived if Pirates took it, but that movie, they topped off before they voted obviously……..

And for those who missed the oscras and the VFX part, here is a link.
I am not trying to step on anyones toes here, but just to post a link for those who missed the ceremony, like me.

Well there goes any credibility the Oscars had in my eyes.

I don't know how much stock the guys at ILM put into the Oscars, but I think they take pride in how well the movie did and how much the fans admired the VFX. If you give a quick look at CGSociety.com Top 100 3D movies, you'll see Transformers in at number 8 and no mention of Golden Compass. I think with all the fans and others in the CG community have given ILM, I'm sure missing a 2008 Oscar will not be that big a deal.

I should clarify:
My Transformers fandom connection has nothing to do with my bugeyed WTF at GOLDEN COMPASS winning the award for best VFX of the past year.

You guys can't say the Academy choose TGC, over POTC: AWE, or TRANSFORMERS, because of Michael Bay, being just Michael Bay, since he, himself, is actually in the Academy for deciding the "Best Director" Award.

Be that as it may, it makes little sense to me for someone to go into a thread about something you may not care about and then ridicule those posting in the thread that do care.
Poho
I am sorely disappointed. not just cause i'm a transformers fan, but because the special effects in TGC weren't even CLOSE to as good as the ones in TF.
rabbid1
Because the good folk who flamed the so-called "cry-babies" because they didn't get the TF movie they wanted have now become cry-babies themselves because the movie didn't win the statue that they wanted.
Superion33
Isn't it boring for you to keep pointing out that? Guess not, so I guess it can make sense that others aren't bored also right?
Black Convoy
I am also shocked about TF's not winning on special effects.
I alos watched the Oscar's because of that, I really miss when this was a really cool ceremony, not just the poor show that is today. I still remember the Oscar when Robocop appeared during the ceremony… imagine today, OP or Bumblebee could have been there too… but today's ceremony is so poor and boring.
It may be a deal of likes and dislikes, but 3D maginal animals have been seen a lot of times, it is not anything original for me. Tf's deserved to win.
Thanks for the youtube for the opening link by the way! I missed that part!

Place your bets people! Which photocomic will be the first to take a shot at this guy;

Why do you sound disgruntled over people talking about TFs and the Oscars in a thread meant for just that?
