Masterpiece Ultra Magnus Concept Image from Takara Designer

Takara Tomy designer Hasui Shogo posted a tweet earlier today, and in it was a pic of very early concept work for a Masterpiece Ultra Magnus - WITH ARMOR. This looks to use the MP-10 Convoy as the base, with a new trailer to work as Ultra Magnus battle deco.

Check out the pic and discussion after the break.

yes yes and fuckin yes here it comes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! looks like needs work but YEEEEEEEESS!!! the rumours were bloody true !!!
Murasame
Looks like a custom kitbashed G1 Magnus trailer on a MP Prime
Transformed
Wow, that's pretty ugly
TigerBlade
Now this is what I'm talking about! Yeah it's a repaint but that can be forgiven if he has his armour.

EDIT - for those saying ugly....look at the detail loss on Prime.....I'd expect this to be awesome by the time it hits retail. I wasn't bothered about MP Rodimus before...now however...bastards....
deathsheadII
only a concept at the moment but will be great when it has had some work done on it! this has actually made my day
Timesynch
Looks like they put that photo through a couple of Photoshop filters to blur out the details. Still, the proportions of both figures are still wonky, especially the arms which are way too long for my tastes. I do notice that UM's shins/feets are turned around backwards to snap into his armored boots; that's kinda interesting. His torso area looks pretty strange to me though. I dunno, proportions-wise these just throw me off and makes me think FP CC UM is still the definitive UM, but guess only time will tell.
Bumblethumper
might need another waist piece, but other than that it works for me.

If you look closely, you will notice that the whole thing has been really badly airbrushed in photoshop or something, giving it a molten wax look.

I suspect the real picture is of the resin cast prototypes and looks a lot better.
Fort Max
Had to read the first post again before I commented as it looks awful but I get it, it's a proof of concept piece, like that HA Ratchet we saw. It's not an actual prototype, still at least they're thinking about it, hopefully they'll actually do it this time.

Yep your right, looking more in detail it's as if it's masked. This would mean it's pretty far along in development wouldn't you think? Perhaps TT are stepping up MP releases?
Megabattimus
So, is this the toy that TCracker was teasing us about? If it is, it's looking good.
Star Saber
Wow, if they do push thru with UM, thats gonna be awesome!
SPLIT LIP
I eagerly await photos without the filter.
TigerBlade
One thing to consider tho, would Hasbro release this? Obviously his trailer is integral to his transformation but you can kiss goodbye to the $60/60 pricetag.
Ricochet
Mr. Hasui means it's just a early concept model, so the details are not related to final product. and he wants us fans to help productize a new MP Magnus.

That's MP-10 and G1 ultra magnus outer piece.
just a conception.

I don't see Hasbro releasing this, unless they sell the trailer separately; which would defeat the purpose of Ultra Magnus.
Fort Max
Hasbro will just have to abandon their current MP pricetag, simple as.

Also, it's very awesome that Takara is letting it's designers post stuff like this, needless to say, it'd be nice if Hasbro would do that again. It was a great day when we got to see those classics 2.0 prototypes and the designers notes all posted on Hasbro's own website. We need more of this sort of thing.
MACRAPTRON
He's saying that you can form Ultra Magnus just by attaching the G1 Magnus parts on MP10 and that a proper MP Magnus will eventually show up if the fans support it.
Transbot90210
So this is the official TT version eh?

Can't say I am blown away but tweak here and there will make him look alright.

I was hoping for something more mindblowing but alas, it was not to be.
PoweredConvoy
Yeah I like how people think this is the actual MP Magnus parts on the new MP Convoy. It's just a sliced up G1 Ultra Magnus on top of the new MP Convoy to show a concept of how it might work if they decide to do one.

No see above.

I'm definitely not impressed with THIS particular shot. The idea of Takara making an MP Magnus though is fantastic.

This is really good to know because it isn't horrible it's just not MP beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if by the time this sees release we get something as invovled as City Commander armour.

I'm sure IF they make one it'll be great. It might not be as much as a parts former as City Commander, but I would think people would be really impressed (TakaraTomy rarely lets us down, and with Rodimus and the new Optimus they really seem to be on the ball for transformations and details).

Randy
DPrime
Ditto all the above.

Nice to see they're at least THINKING of doing it. I was thinking we'd probably have to wait for a third party (probably iGear) in order to get a proper UM...

This pretty much says it all. With the success of Grimlock, Rodimus and the new Prime you really think they are going to drop the ball? I think they finally caught their groove.

I thought Rodimus had issues Transforming or staying together. Is this not the case or was it corrected?

The corrected the Rodimus issues with the re-release and the American release. Also not all the original Rodimus had issues. Outside of not being able to hold his gun, mine suffered no other issues.

I was refering more to the look that the functionality because I knew the Rodimus QC would come up lol.

In the least I know TT's UM will LOOK awesome.

Sorry. At least they corrected

Ever since the new came out of MP10, I've been looking forward to an Ultra Magnus repaint/retool. I'm skipping MP10, but will definitely pick up a proper armored MP-UM. Now while this concept image doesn't look all that great due to it using the G1 toy armor, I'm positive a proper MP designed armor/trailer would look fantastic and maintain the poseability and functionality of what we've come to expect from the MP line.
ComicGuy89
It's a shame it's still a concept, but even with the G1 parts, he looks pretty good! I hope an Ultra Magnus, a PROPER Ultra Magnus is on TakaraTomy's mind.
TCracker
It is only a mock up. There will be more details coming
courtdevil
take it easy guys, just MP10 wearing G1 armor, nothing but a mock-up
ex dtw2003
Oh man, don't get me started on Rodimus. I've gone through 3 of these guys and I still have light pin cracking on this "good" one - though not in any structurally critical joint thank goodness.

Roddy is finicky and fragile IMHO, and to me, that does not equate to TT "finding their groove". And secondarily, getting him into alt mode while technically not hard is still a pain because of the hands and the fact that the legs seem miss completely folding up by just that little bit.

I truly hope that MP-10 doesn't have these or other issues and that Roddy was an aberation - ambition over manufacturing capability.
SydneyY
Hasui-san (the designer) says in his tweet that positive reaction from the fans will lead to the actual product!

Also, fuck, I missed the Twitter session
G.I.EDDIE
so its a tease/mock-up...cool for those purposes...nice hint too...obviously will need some work...

Me too, I really think a Masterpiece figure should have Masterpiece stability as well. These toys aren't cheap, and their quality control issues aren't as forgivable as the mainline toys.

I can just imagine how much an MP Ultra Magnus will cost, considering adding non-transformable trailers to Optimus and Rodimus already went beyond the $200 breaking point. How much more will a transformable trailer cost? Still, if quality control is awesome and he's a good figure, he'll definitely be worth it! IF the QC is good.
Satomiblood
I still prefer Ultra Magnus as a self-contained toy, not as a glorified armor cache for an obvious Prime redeco. This is kind of why I never really dedciated myself to picking up a City Commander.
encline
I can't read the site, but how in anyway is this official? Looks like the start of a custom.
PoweredConvoy
Is the original Tweet gone?

Unfortunately, G1 Ultra Magnus has always been composed of glorified armor cache for a Prime redeco

Not always (see G1 Titanium release). Even the pre-Dreamwave mythos portrayed him as not being a white Prime with car carrier parts, despite the original toy.

I could forgive this sort of toy engineering in G1, but once Hasbro/Takara started making white Primes and dubbing them as "Ultra Magnus" in subsequent lines, I sort of lost my enthusiasm, which is a shame considering that I really like the white redeco by itself.
miscreant
Interesting timing.

Not to mention the fact they appear to have put the trailer parts on the BACK of MP10.

It's time for another round of 'Why can't i get the exact same toy from Hasbro for less money??'

Not really IMHO.

It's Hasbro that has stuck with the $60 price point. Obviously they feel that that is the sweet spot for selling MPs in the US.

And since Hasbro hasn't opted to sell every version of MP that TT has produced AND since we all agree that 1) the trailer is intergral to UM and 2) that Hasbro can't sell it with the trailer for $60, it is right to assume we won't be getting a US version of UM.

damn that sucks, my rodimus is doing just fine, i don't think mine has any problems whatsoever, but yeah, while i love rodimus, it required a level of perfection of engineering that just couldn't be mass produced at a large scale. Its still one of my favorite figures. MP-10 hopefully will be much better, i'm grabbing it when i can

It's a start... That's what I can ask for

Mr.Hasui's tweets gave us some informations.
Sorry for a poor translation.

"(about MP request) No less, Soundwave is very popular..."

"MP-10 and Alternity(s) are in similar scale."

"MP-10's container can house any Alternity figure in vehicle mode."

"Spike figurine can be ridden on passenger seat of some Alternity figures, so you can play some kind of Human Alliance activity."

"Masterpiece TM Firebolt was developed by the hasbro's request.
Though FB is only for US release, he would like to introduce it to Japanese market because it is his favorite piece of work."

"MP Ultra magnus' concept is already ready.
MP-10 wearing original Ultra Magnus' pieces becomes like this.
Your ardent backups may make it real. Thank you for your continued help."

Thank you for the translation.

I assume the Firebolt talk is of Offshoot for Roddy.
