Tetra Squadron Reviews

Posted on 03-20-2013 at 11:03 PM by Tony_Bacala under Sponsor News
Site sponsor Big Bad Toy Store dropped us a line and asked us to feature a couple video reviews of upcoming 3rd party products Tetra Squadron. Bonus, they are by 2005's own Vangelus! Enjoy below.

You can pre-order the figures here at BBTS: http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/s...ssibletoys.com

Please remember, these are third party items, neither endorsed nor licensed by Hasbro, Takara-Tomy or their licensees.

if the heasdsculpt was better i'd probably grab skywarp.

shame, but interesting.
TheGame2K5
But do they fly? Come on Vangelus test it out for us. LOL That face sculpt though, wow. It looks like someone tried making a mold of another head and the details were all lost in the process.
Squee
OMG i kept flinching, that video...
badoptimus
Indeed its IT's best effort to date. I just wish their future products can build on this new standard(I'm won't do the cliche of condemning/maligning them XD).

I may get one of those, maybe a Dirge version. The face is quite meh, so I do wish there was a corrected run before I go for the catch.

Know what I find a bit curious? Venksta helped with the design of the figures right? ...and yet those head sculpts... I'd have to cast doubt that he had much say in their design. At least, compare these to the offerings he puts up at Renderform. Those sculpts are sooooo much better overall.

Anyway... good review as always... even if you were pretty brutal with them. I expected a hammer to be involved tho! >_>

I'd consider giving them a shot... but as is I can't even catch up to all the holiday season items... so...
Superquad7
I had a ton of fun watching this!

I have had 2 of these preordered from the start, but those horrible face sculpts have me wondering if I really want to keep them or not. I havent had any concerns about quality and didn't mind the robot modes, but I was hoping that the faces weren't as bad as the low-res pictures made them look. In a decent resolution, they look far worse.

The initial design was made by me, 100%. There are revisions Impossible did after I delivered the design to them, most of them are improvements. One thing people will have to keep in mind about my involvement with this, is that I designed this back in 2009 for Impossible. Before Renderform was an idea. Before some talented designer had a thought about a Bruticus upgrade or a figure name Steelcore. Before even Cylcops came to be. This predates over half the 3P groups that exist right now. The design shows its age, and should of been released by 2011, in my opinion. But despite the flaws and aging, I'm happy with what I see.

As for the head, the blame can be shared by myself and Impossible. The size is my fault. It looked fine in my software. I didn't notice the issue until they showed me the testshot. The face sculpt, from what I can see, seems to have smoothened out during the tooling process by the group. I noticed on both this, Alicon, and the Nightbird head I designed, that fine details got smoothed out or were simply removed.

For those that have an issue with the head, I've been talking with Impossible toys and we have some solutions, but it will take some time to fully plan and reveal.

i had to quietly snicker at my desk since im at work

but this video was a ton of fun

the figures look really good as well

I have to agree with the idea the Banshee needed more painted details. Compare the toy alt mode of Banshee with Starscream as he appeared in tetrajet mode in the club comics:

Starscream had blue wingtips, and a smaller windshield, with grey around it. ALso, the Decepticon symbols help, but you can add that with reprolabels.
Backstop
Great review. Man I hope Vangelus does not beat the shit out of all his toys like that to test quality lol.

Can't wait.

Wow... this thing was in the idea stage for almost four years?

As for the heads... its mostly that the Seeker heads are a bit oversized. Sure, the faces look overly smoothed out on both, but if the scale were a bit smaller, it'd be fine I'd say. Honestly given the figure scale, I'd not be the least bit suprised if those acquiring these figures alsp on a Classics Seeker head. (Got a Junker Acid Storm that would work wonderfully for this too.) They are afterall about the same height and roughly similar proportions that it shouldn't look foreign whatsoever.

That said... I'd definitely consider getting a conehead if I could. Thrust or Ramjet though... hm... good question...

No, it was designed over 4 years ago. I delivered the CAD designs to them back in August 2009. After that, I designed Alicon, and the group decided to release Alicon first since he was simpler compared to the Tetra Squadron.

It looked a little small when he had SG Thundercracker next to TJ Starscream. The FOC head might work, though I'm not sure if it would match very well. The next size up is probably the Cybertron Voyager heads, but that might be too big.

I've been OK with the size of the head from the start - it isn't perfect and the body proportions may not be perfect, but very few TF's really are. My only complaint has been the soft details of the faces, they look like factory mistakes or preschool toys.
Slimaximus
While I no longer fear the durability, I still don't like the the stumpyness the bot mode gives off and HATE the heads. But I do LOVE the alt mode, but 1 mode is not enough to drop 50-60 bucks per on them. If they hit clearance, which with so many versions being released I'm sure they will, I'll get them then.
Dashdragon
I was flinching at the first tosses, then I could help but chuckle at each one...thank god my peers are at lunch
Theprimeoflegen
That thundercracker.

So YOU'RE to blame for Alicon!! No offense to you, but in actual in-hand reality that figure is a plastic turd. I'm sorry to be so honest, but I felt like I completely wasted $80. Took it and literally hucked it out my car window while doing 60 mph. Such a sad, sad toy.
Kidreaper
Truth be told, I was grimacing when Vangelus was doing his shake test. Lol I was just waiting for a transformer body decapitate and go flying at the camera.

Another entertaining review as always. Always puts me in a good mood.
Incepticon
Great effort, but poor execution. Unfortunate since these things could look absolutely *amazing* if the bot modes were refined and the alt mode coloring was less 'cheapy' looking.
Alpha Omega Trion Supreme
Vangelus, I am *NOT* going to buy one of the Coneheads. I don't care how cool you make them look! I'm going to stick with my Starscream/Banshee pre-order and LIKE it! So stop it. Like now. Please?

Great review. I was flinching too when you were tossing the figures around, but owning Valkyrie, I fully understand the point you were making. Valkyrie would have been a mess of permanently broken plastic parts if you did that to her. I feel much more confident about my pre-order after watching this.

Yea...I was laughing my ass off watching him abuse them like red.....oh nevermind. Made me interested in them again...but the faces and head...uhhh.....

I think its cool that you're actually wanting to change that. If and when the new heads come out....I might change my mind about these as initially, I was really liking them when I saw the alt mode. And honestly, the head did it in for me One question though (ok two).....will this new head solution in the works delay the over-all release of the toy? Will it encompass all seekers? Or just the initial trio?
CodeXCDM
Man I can't stop laughing at that review. Wish more companies would give Vangelus samples he's allowed to beat up...

That said... if I could spend money at all... I wouldn't mind getting the Ramjet or Skywarp. Best decos of the bunch I'd say...
Zambot
Hahaha, LMAO at that first video! Good stuff. I'm torn, really want to support Impossible Toys as I think they continue to improve and grow with each release. Eh, I might grab one. A new head would go along way.
lee9
I'm tempted to get a Skywarp. We'll see. I like the head size, since it matches the G1 screenshots exactly.
Deceptigtar
these look terrible. they look light and cheap. the head is bad.

i dont blame venksta so much as i have had his own products in the past, i think a lot has to do with who produces them as well.

and everything IT has done and i have seen in and played with in my own hands has been bottom grade compared to other stuff out there.
Paarthurnax
I want Starscream, Thundercracker & Skywarp. The heads don't bother me. They fit in well with the G1 toys. I wanted these back in 84 or 85 so I'm just going to imagine that they were released back then but I'm just getting them now. I don't really want them to be ultra detailed & perfectly proportioned like modern figures. These belong in your G1 collection & will fit in nicely.

LMAO! That was the craziest review I have ever seen. Just throwing the damn things all over the place=awesome!

And NO! No coneheads! I despise what the stupid cartoon did to those characters. I will forever reject the stupid looking coneheads!
Roadblock1977
Those are fucking awesome !! I may have to get them. The heads are a little on the large side though.
TFXProtector
I couldn't tell if this was a duo of comedy videos or reviews (this is a good thing, btw.) because it was just so friggin' entertaining. This was one of the best reviews I've ever seen. Absolutely hilarious. Thank you. Vange1us, for the good times. Oh, man.

And I'm sold. So glad I preordered. I'm all over the Starscream one.
gothsaurus
Knowing what was said about when they were designed, I think the small flaws are excusable... Especially if new heads are in the works. I think what needs to be kept in mind with these AND allicon is that they're really aimed at fans of the 80s toys... And the aesthetics lean toward that style... Which means they will display well along side those toys... Or perhaps to bridge the gap between those and classics. With the challenge of pulling a g1 seeker bot out of a completely flat rounded shape... Amazing results given the near impossible challenge. Props to Venksta and support by getting the line. Keep pushing forward and hope you can figure a good solution for heads! I've wanted these jets since the first episode. They're gonna look amazing. Now if someone will mass produce a decent bee from ep1
gothsaurus
Oh yeah. Video was hilarious and cringe inducing. Remind me to avoid his eBay sales like the plague. ;-)
Hellion42
When I saw these on BBTS the other day my inner child went nuts seeing the tetra designs in plastic form. Digging the robot mode too aside from the heads... which really kind of took me out of nostalgia heaven. Loved the review, seeing them in action made them seem all the more impressive. I'm just not sure if I can jump in though. That's a lot to drop on the full set, and I don't think I could pick up just one. Or two. Or three. Damn OCD.
LadyStarscream
Best review ever!
It kept me entertained, and gave some extra insight on these guys. That head and face is terrible, it's as bad (if not worse) than I feared! If only the head was better, I would order all 7 of them! For now, I keep only my Starscream pre order.

Please fix that head and I'll throw money at you, impossible toys!!!

I am obsessed with seeker trios, I'm a seeker completest (even the horrible movie stuff that I hate) but that head, I can't do it this time.
Transformed
I thought this was a pretty impressive project until I saw them transformed Their robot modes leave a lot to be desired, especially the original seeker heads--they look like cheap knockoffs the lack of paint doesn't help either.
Paarthurnax
The heads aren't as bad as you're making them out to be. Ah, toy collectors & their gift of over-exaggeration. They're not the best but definitely not the worst either. I keep thinking of movie Arcee, these things are masterpieces next to that abomination!

Yes, most of those movie head sculpts were ugly, but they were atleast detailed, not to mention those deluxes cost under 15.00 each, even less on sale.

I'm the last one to defend the awfulness that is movie toys, but these tetra heads are really cheap looking and ruin an otherwise decent figure.
barrelks
Other then the heads, the only thing I would like for some reason is a translucent cockpit. For some reason the solid color just doesn't do it for me.
Nerdicon
they have a sunstorm. ZOMG!
Houndvoice
I see ghosts.

Carpool
No...no way...hell no. No indeed. Thanks for reviewing them. From the standpoint of just sitting on a shelf they look fantastic. As a collection of Tetra Seekers they are amazing. As Transformers they are a fu--ing trainwreck! I like to take them off the shelves once a week or so and transform them. Dust them off...pose em different. These things look a bit overcomplicated for my tastes. Again. Thanks for posting. Saved me a ton and now I can go and buy the Not Predaking set instead!
Johnator
Those heads look terrible.
jamarmiller
wish they did the rainmakers in cartoon g1 color accuracy I'd be definitely interested in those too

I asked IT on their FB page about that the other week and they said it was being considered.

The cockpit window was designed to be translucent. Not sure why they didn't do so for production. Otherwise, it would not of been designed to open up and show the details inside.
MROptimusPrime
I am just GREATFUL we are getting these FINALLY !!!
Alucard77
The only problem I have with this video is that I could almost tell that some one told Vangelous to throw these things around for however long he threw them around for to prove a point. I personally like neutrality in my reviews, and Vangelous did give an even opinion, but I don't see the use of chucking these things around for that long. I understand that IT has given us crap before, but if every review we see of these has people chucking them around, it will be kinda ridiculous. Just a memo to IT, we get it, we get it. The plastic is good, it won't break. Thanks.

Now on a separate note. I do love that Venskta had a say in this, and I gotta agree with him. These should have came out 2 or 3 years ago. The Alt mode looks great on these, but the bot mode looks dated as all hell for a classics figure. Having said, that, these should have been priced at $30 a pop for what they are. With $50, I can get so much more in the third party market now a days. So I am going to hold out for these to hit $30.

The main problem with IT, is that they are always like 3 steps behind all the other third party companies. At this point the game is beyond them. They need to know that at the prices they want for these things, you need to look the part, feel the part and not break. Just not breaking is not good enough anymore. People aren't paying $50 for something that looks dated.

Having said that, I would pay $100 for a 3 pack if those faces were fixed.
