Not a major toy news, but it is worth mentioning that Hasbro is planning to introduce a new “PVC-Less” Toy Packaging by 2013.

This decision comes from their effort to “Go Green”. Hasbro, Inc. announced today that it will eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from all new core toy and game packaging beginning in 2013. Hasbro has already begun to phase out PVC from some packaging, and has committed to completely eliminating PVC in packaging for new product beginning in 2013.

Hasbro Announces Commitment to Eliminate PVC from Core Product Packaging

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) announced today that it will eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from all new core toy and game packaging beginning in 2013. Hasbro has already begun to phase out PVC from some packaging, and has committed to completely eliminating PVC in packaging for new product beginning in 2013.

"At a time when consumers have an abundance of choices, we hope our track record of innovation and corporate citizenship — including our focus on sustainable packaging and product safety — will give shoppers one more reason to choose our products during the holiday season and throughout the year," said Brian Goldner, Hasbro's president and chief executive officer.

Hasbro highlighted the commitment to eliminate PVC from all new core toy and game packaging for products manufactured at its contracted third-party facilities, in its 2010 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, which is now available online at www.hasbro.com/csr

"Walmart applauds Hasbro's long-term commitment and accomplishments in corporate social responsibility," said Laura Phillips, Walmart's senior vice president of toys and seasonal merchandising. "As Hasbro builds upon its industry leadership position in environmental sustainability and product safety, we are hopeful that all industry players will adopt similarly ambitious goals."

"Our commitment to corporate social responsibility is behind everything we do at Hasbro, and we're pleased to be sharing our CSR goals and accomplishments with the world in our first-ever CSR Report. We are proud of our progress to date and look forward to making continual improvements in CSR as we assess the many opportunities and challenges ahead," said Goldner.

Phasing out PVC in packaging is the most recent effort in a long series of sustainable packaging initiatives by Hasbro, all of which are designed to minimize the impact on natural resources:
  • Elimination of Wire Ties: In 2010, Hasbro replaced all wire ties in its packages with ties made from paper rattan or bamboo mix to reduce environmental impact. The effort eliminated approximately 34,000 miles of wire ties — more than enough to wrap around the circumference of the Earth.
  • Increase in Recycled Content: In 2010, Hasbro set a goal to derive at least 75 percent of paper and board packaging from recycled material, or from sources that practice sustainable forest management, by 2011. By 2015, Hasbro plans to increase that goal to 90 percent.
  • New Sourcing of Paper: Hasbro outlined an aggressive paper sourcing policy in 2011, providing guidelines for suppliers regarding sustainable paper sourcing to help ensure that paper used in Hasbro products aligns with the company's commitment to environmental sustainability. Among the policy's key requirements is the expectation that suppliers will source paper with as much post-consumer recycled content as practical and financially viable. The company has communicated the policy to its suppliers, and has made it a part of its company-wide quality assurance procedures.

In addition to these leading sustainable packaging commitments, Hasbro is committed to continuous improvement in corporate social responsibility. The company's CSR efforts focus on three key priorities: product safety, manufacturing ethics, and environmental sustainability.

Earlier this month, Hasbro was named a 2011 sector leader by Climate Counts, a non-profit organization rating corporations on their efforts toward mitigating climate change. Hasbro was named to the group's top rating tier as a Company that is "striding toward a low-carbon future."

Other goals, accomplishments, and initiatives outlined in Hasbro's 2010 CSR Report include:
  • Reducing the company's global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 11 percent from a 2008 baseline, using Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidelines
  • Continuing the company's outstanding record of product safety
  • Producing zero waste in U.S. manufacturing processes
  • Continuing to ensure that the company's owned and operated factories, third-party factories, and licensee factories pursue fair and safe labor conditions
  • Auditing the company's third-party factories and licensee factories to ensure they achieve the International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI) Seal of Compliance in countries where ICTI operates its Caring, Aware, Responsible and Ethical (CARE) program

wow. this is all fantastic news. Bravo Hasbro.

Good on ya', Hasbro.

I always felt that, every time I bought a toy, I kept thinking "Man, this is a LOT of garbage...and EVERYONE who bought this toy is making the same amount of waste..."
Tux Chaos X
I'm unfamiliar with the components of current toy packages; I imagine this will affect the plastic bubbles on the cards and that hold Voyagers and such in place in the boxes?
process
Kudos.

The wire ties were a horrible thing to start doing anyway, security or not. Nevertheless it is good they are trying to clean things up and I will be a little happier when buying my transformers in future packaging
shadowfall1976
so my question is....if they eliminate PVC which is the plastic bubbles that cover the toys..what is going to protect them on the shelves & pegs? Many hands touch Transformers and most are kids...they will be scuffed and everything if they don't have something protecting them.....

And I never understood anyway, why they couldn't just make the inner plastic tray form fit to the toys, to eliminate the ties altogether a long time ago..a lot of other companies never used ties in their toys...to me they used way, way too many on some that weren't going to fall out anyway, like the Classics Magnus v Skywarp set....way too many for such light toys.
Transmetal
While I can't complain if a company wants to go green what will this do to misb guys like myself? An open TF's box will look pretty weird if u ask me. I guess we'll have to wait and see though.
Mechafire
<3 ya, Hasbro.

Bitchin'!
General Tekno
Yeah; I'm equally curious what they'll be replacing the plastic bubbles with.

Is this just a material change to a more biodegradable plastic, or are they doing away with the bubbles altogether?
DPrime
I'd be cool if we saw a return to boxes, like G1 style... Probably won't happen because of the way toys are displayed, but still, it'd be cool, and maybe more environmentally friendly.

Some sort of cardboard tray/insert, maybe? Plastic could be reduced to a single small sheet so you can see inside, that's it.

Wire ties have their uses though, all the same.

I'm using a couple to secure a DOTM Laserbeak to my desk lamp.

For that matter, the main reason they got brought in, from what I've read/heard, is that back in the 90s when MMPR got huge, people were going to stores and taking the toys out of the boxes.
Scaleface
I want to see all ties eliminated, but I like plastic clamshells like we saw on the Toys R us commerative packages. Those are not garbage, as most collectors keep those boxes!
doomboy536
That is fantastic news. Bloody well done Hasbro.
polystyleneman
Glad to hear Hasbro's moving in the right direction on this. Good on ya, 'Bro. I know I always feel a bit guilty about buying toys full of so much wasteful packaging.

Not only is being environmentally conscious so important, but you'd think Hasbro would appreciate the money-saving potential of cutting down on needless packaging materials, and by using recycled packaging materials where possible. Good to see them realizing that.
Barricade24
I hope they don't plan on packaging figures like the Robo Power Activators. People can just cut them out of their wrapping and steal them. I saw one that was stolen at my Wal-Mart.
blackout501st
Good for you hasbro! I'll be interested to see how the packaging will look after this change. Will deluxe bubble cards start to look more like voyager boxes? Maybe like the older revoltech boxes?
Transbot90210
Pro- Going green is good

Con- No PVC protecting my TF's means kids will be touching MY figure before I get to buy it.

Verdict- Go Green Hasbro because I need a planet to live on to enjoy my figures.

Hold up. You implying that they're going to be putting an unprotected window on packaging?

As that's a recipe for disaster right there - it means anyone with a Swiss army knife can pull out the scissors and grab that toy out of the box in no time flat.

I wonder if we'll ever get toy packaging that's completely opaque over here. As in, you can't actually see the toy in-package, but you see instead artwork and a photoshopped pic of the toy.

A lot of collectors would get POed at that.
exclusacon
This will raise prices, since going green is expensive......
NIBMRatchet
I wonder if they are going for this approach:

Resource Section: Rescue Bots

*Without the plastic wires of course.
Noideaforaname
Plenty of other toys have no plastic bubbles, and of course stuffed dolls just sit on the shelf with absolutely nothing in the way of packaging, so I severely doubt we'll be seeing masses of empty packages when this happens.

Heinz, Pepsi, and Coke have been trying out "plant bottles," which seemingly work just as well as plastic without using any (or at least not as much). Perhaps Hasbro will be doing something similar?

Cool story, hasBro. But how you really going to protect toys without that plastic windows?

I can't see that working, on account of the fact that Deluxes have too many small/removable parts on them.

If they did that, there'd be an uptick in people taking individual parts off of figures for customizing or to get an extra weapon or something like that.
hiway7
Imagine how much earth they will save if they stopped making so many Bumblebee movie figures.
Fort Max
Paper bags then, lol.
Gingerchris
If they wanna go the whole hog and still keep things protected and together, how about they just shrink-wrap figures and their instructions without any other packaging? Just a Transformers banner sticker and a barcode on the underside.
MidnightBliss
Great. I hate the amount of Waste there is in packaging. I understand the need for your product to stand out on the shelf but, we really throw away alot of packaging.
robowarrior
Bravo Hasbro!

And to you sir!!

There will still be plastic bubbles, it will just be biodegradable plastic or something along those lines.
PropagandaWar
Woot for Hasbro. Now if they could just regergatate water bottles.
defstar
No more bubbles or windows...
tfprime32
boring! wow all there doing is changing the lame packaging! thats boring!
prime326
I am such a fan of the new ties. Just a simple cut with scissors.

That's totally the wrong mindset. Companies can usually save money by eliminating packaging and using "green" to justify the poorer aesthetics and security.

For example, Hasbro got rid of the plastic baggies that hold the instructions; materials and labor saved.

Exactly. It'll just be a different material.
orionpacks85
So let me get this striaght... Collectors will be buying more eco-friendly packages only to send them to a toy grader which will seal it in a plastic case?!

and Hasbro, you can save on packaging altogether and just send any G1 reissues straight to my house!
Thanks!
G1Jetfire
Who throws away the packaging? All my TFs are in their original packaging. They have been opened, but it's easier to store and trnsport them with their packaging. If the current plastic isn't biodegradable, it should at least be recyclable.
Transbot90210
Outside of my 3rd party figures and MP's, every other package has been disgarded.
bossprime
I hope all of you guys recycle your packages. I'v been doing that for years.
Omnius
Good move on Hasbro's part - I suspect they'll be moving to a different type of plastic though, rather than eliminating bubbles and windows altogether. I can't see them having completely open packaging, nor 'blind-packing' everything in cardboard.
03Mach1
Let me know when they bring back Styrofoam. Then I'll be excited.

Honestly, I suspect we won't notice too much of a difference. It'll probably be similar to what we have now, but probably a lot more streamlined and the plastic will be of a more biodegradable style, like others have said. (After all, they said they want to reduce it by 90%... That still gives them 10% to play with there.)
Fort Max
I already throw all the packing materials for hasbro figures in the recycling bin anyway.
Autovolt 127
I like that Hasbro is doing this.

I can't wait to see how packaging will look?
