Hasbro not in talks with Disney

Phew!

After the Star Wars buyout, I read the Hasbro buyout rumor, and thought it sounded like something someone made up. The timing just felt unbelievable.

Well it's nice that things have been cleared up one way or another.

It seemed like a strategically odd decision for Disney. They would go from an entertainment company that markets its own toy lines as an offshoot of its entertainment properties, to all of a sudden an inverse model where they would own a toy company that just happens to have a few entertainment properties. Again, Disney has its own toy and merchandising down pretty well with- from what I can tell- not any major competition from the likes of Hasbro. The Disney/Lucas marriage seemed much more organic as they have been 'in bed' together for many years- with Captain EO, Star Tours, and the various Disney/Star War mash ups. Hasbro on the other hand has its own thing going on as well just in a different way- invariably supporting larger entertainment properties that in most cases (at least these days) they did not originate (i.e., Star Wars, Marvel, etc.) and although there is crossover (obviously Hasbro produces Star Wars merch) I just don't see Disney buying a straight up toy company. Especially if their reason for doing so would be to acquire the Transformers brand for the most part. Although a strong brand with fans worldwide its current market strength is based mostly on the movies with the toys an ancillary. For the most part Disney functions the other way round with movies their bread and butter and toys/merchandising not their main business (depending on who you ask).

But anyway, I'm glad this turned out to be rumor. At least for now.

I'm relieved. I was afraid that if Disney bought Hasbro some of the more violent toy lines would be cancelled.

Good news indeed. Hope to never see Disney's dirty rodent paws on my beloved Transformers.

The fact so many people are willing to believe rumors like it's official statements around here...no wonder I usually stay out of news and rumors.

I'd liek to say I'm relieved but this wouldn't be the first time a company has come out to say not true only to turn around later and doa below the belt sell off kind deal....I'm still skeptical.

Not saying it's true OR false... But denying these things is standard practice for mergers and buyouts until they're finalized. Admitting it's happening can mess up the deal by poisoning stock price, upsetting partners, etc...

No matter how super special someone's informant is, everyone who knows at Hasbro would be under a serious NDA at this stage.

I'm not sure if it's wise to expect a rational, straight answer from you, but what exactly would Disney give in benefit to the production of those toys? If there isn't a market for them, then Disney wouldn't waste money making them, and if there was, then I'm sure Hasbro would be looking into it.

Bottom line: Disney buying Hasbro would do NOTHING to get you what you want.

Actually, the idea that Hasbro would have to dissolve agreements with Disney competitors is false. If that were true then the acquisition of LucasFilm which includes Skywalker Sound, and ILM would require the same caveat of contract disillusion and it did not. Owning Hasbro allows Disney direct control of the Star Wars toy line as well as ownership of the Hasbro IPs like Transformers, and Ponies and if Disney were to make the acquisition it is assumed that, like the Marvel and LucasFilm deal, they would likely leave the company operations for toys alone. You would actually see integration or elimination of the HUB in favor of Disney XD and films would probably be allowed to maintain contracted ownership of rights until other deals could be made to return rights back to Hasbro similar to how the Fantastic Four and Spiderman remain with studios other than Marvel/Disney.

I imagine this weird cyclical rumor-building thing going on:

- Disney buys Lucasfilm. Bought Marvel previously.

- TF Board threads go "What if Disney bought Hasbro/Transformers too? Ya think that might happen?"

- Word of threads get to geek rumor sites "OMG They must know something!"

- Geek rumor sites report Disney might buy Hasbro

- TF Board threads: "OMG look at this rumor! We were just TALKING about that! Must be true! Told you so!"

- Hasbro: "wat."

It's not true until it is. Anyway, Brian Goldner still needs to get the boot.

Not saying that the rumor is TRUE...BUT when it comes to business stuff a denial doesn't mean anything...

Ok I am relieved!! I can sleep happy tonight knowing that Transformers is safe from disney hands for now!! I didn't like the fact of the next transformers series ending with 52 episodes and a possible cliffhanger like disney did with another show I use to watch. To clear things up Disney has this really stupid rule where a show can't have any more than 52 episodes well for the fans of one show (Kim Possible) they made that the only exception but another show I was a fan of before I stumbled upon Transformers (Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!) had to end at 52 episodes but on a cliff hanger also there was going to be just 1 more season to wrap things up but disney wouldn't allow it no matter how hard the fans fought. So I am just that much more relieved that Disney didn't buy out Hasbro.

Yeah well they should still fire the staff who does TF Prime! Disney-formers did have a nicer ring to it than "Shrek" did...

It doesn't make sense that Disney would risk ruining the Disney Princess Franchise and Pixar Deals, they always seemed more buddy-buddy with Mattel. Also, wouldn't they make faaaar more off licensing fees than operating their own toy company?

I'm surprised Viacom/Paramount and Universal aren't forming stronger ties with Hasbro/acquiring Hasbro stock to protect their movie franchise/theme park ride investments.

I was looking forward to a Disney deal. Hoped that Disney would've put more money into toy production to get back to better quality figures, oh well...
