Cool Fanmade Lego Soundwave / Gameboy Crossover

So I was browsing the boards this morning when I saw that 2005 Boards member CodeXCDM had shared this Lego Transformers X Nintendo crossover someone had designed and I felt it was too cool not to share!

Based on the classic Nintendo Gameboy, this fan-designed Lego Transformer transforms into Soundwave! Just like the original Soundwave, he has cassettes - they are the game cartridges! And like the original, the weapons form up out of the batteries. The creation is officially named "Domaster and Tetrawing", and is the creation of Lego creator Julius von Brunk, who you might know of already for recreating the Super Mario Bros. 3 airship in Lego. Check out more of his work here.

This slice of cool and fun news comes to you via Gizmodo.

I wish there was Lego TFs. It would be so fun.

I shall never buy LEGO rip off like Kre-o or whatever HASBROs rip off of lego is called.

Why? It's the same thing, just made by another company, plus they're interchangeable. How's that a bad thing?

On what? Robbing LEGO of the money they should be getting for their idea? They were creative enough to think of it and try to encourage creativeness. All HASBRO has done is taken other peoples ideas.

Just saying, its your choice to let simple licensing be the reason to not experience the joy that is Kre-o.

Just because I don't like incorrect facts,I shall correct myself. It seems that Lego is actually a rip off of Kiddicraft Self-Locking Bricks. Buts still, two wrongs doesn't equal a right or whatever.

How is it wrong? Is LEGO suing Hasbro for intellectual property theft? No, they don't have a problem with it, otherwise it wouldn't happen. If they don't have a problem with it, why should you or anyone else?

I just don't find it to be right to rip something off, just because it's more popular than what you're doing.

Guys, guys, can we get back on the topic please? This is an awesome custom Lego Transformer! I love all the little touches like the cartridge Soundwave!
Vamast
when megabloks made bricks lego sued but the brick cannot belong to one company like bandai not being the only company to make model kits. kreos arent bad, they have horrible designs. Brickshelf Gallery - Neo Blurr, fastest Autobot, Transformers ever this uses all the parts and transformers, not part form. hell, the valkyrie lego some japanese dude made is just as good. its just that kreos seem dissapointing for not using all the parts in both modes. its why fan creations are more intuitive and not based on budget, which is why the kreos have limited pieces.

Well lego is a rip off of a even older brick company that never got the money so it went of sale then lego came along stole the idea put loads of money into it and made a lot of money

Plus Kre-o is now legos main opponent being bioncle and cars at the same time really and Kre-o minifigs are superior

Why isn't this official?

Hasbro, why you no want my money?
Brunkion76
Cool, wonder if I am somehow distantly related to this guy
Superquad7
This is certainly well done

This is really impressive. Looking at the smaller photos I was thinking "what purpose could the batteries have?" then I realized they too were lego. Lego Soundwave creator: great work!

The LEGO group has gotten plenty of money for their idea. It enjoyed 30 years of patent protection, which ended in 1988... though the company has since tried to restrict competition on dubious copyright and/or trademark grounds, with varying levels of success.

I suspect Nintendo Co., Ltd. would have something to say about that.

guys guys guys! I dunno how they can call them Lego Transformers?(Kre-o..etc) coz your not actually transforming them! just disassembling & reassembling! they need to find a way of transforming without taking them apart!
Mepayne
I saw this on Instructables a few days back. The dude also made a Nintendo Zapper Transformer.
Mister Gone
As cool as this is I can't help but seel like it belongs in Radicons, why the front page? Slow news day? Get Octo-Duckies out of the limelight quicker?
spikex
It is indeed a wonderful piece of awesomeness.

This is exactly what I came in to say. Is it neat? Yes. Is it front page worthy. No./2cents
bignick1693
It sad that hasbro can make fully transforming building sets.
ex dtw2003
This thing is so awesome and just reinforces my opinion that Kreo designs are lacking.

Kre-O minifigs are definitely not superior. While the hip joint is a theoretically neat idea to give the little figs more poseability it actually works to 1) make it harder for the figs to interact with the blocks and 2) makes it harder to keep the figs upright and standing.

Is it cool to have TF-minifigs? Yes.
Is the Kre-O mini fig design superior? No..
RodimusDawg
I'm slight confused as to how this is news?

It's awesome in every aspect (especially the batteries) but its a custom non the less.

What makes it news worthy?
Sol Fury
I just felt it was too awesome not to share. Maybe it's not news in the traditional sense, but it's sharing the fun of the hobby. PM me if you disagree, I'd like to keep this thread on topic.
Sonscreen
This is pretty cool. Very creative.

I saw the robot mode, thinking it was just supposed to be a regular Soundwave model, and thought "That's cool, it kind of looks like him."

Then I saw it turns into a Game Boy and the cart and batteries actually fit into it and I was all "Oh my god oh my god holy shit"

This is amazing!
tikgnat
That is brilliant.

I want one, and Nintendo have licensed (well at least I think it was licensed) transforming Nintendo items before, I have a transforming Famicom Cartridge floating around somewhere.
Optimus Clyde
Win! Good idea for translating Soundwave and his minions into new, modernized alt modes. Take note, Hasbro...
lordelohim
It seems to me that no one has asked the right question: can you make a model of this in LEGO digital designer so that other people can try to make one? I mean, if you didn't make it there in the first place, you might have to reverse engineer it, but do you think you could? I probably have most of the parts to build one of these, and I would love to.

I do want to throw in my two cents on the LEGO vs KREO debate though. KREO is exactly the same thing that Hasbro tried 5 years ago with LEGO style Transformers and GI Joe, only now with minifigs. Why do people love it now, when it failed miserably then? I kind of agree with the first opinion, leave it to LEGO, though I feel it's because they do it best. Maybe KREO is different, but with the other sets I mentioned, the bricks feel different than LEGOs, a little thicker, but cheaper at the same time. And my problem with them, as with KREO, is that I want my Transformer to transform, and not have to rebuild it. Personally, KREO just feels wrong, just like it did several years ago when everyone hated it, and I would love to know what changed.
GetterRobo
This is actually pretty cool... with the original Pokemon Red and Blue GB cartridges, you can have Rumble and Frenzy.
WhiteMocha
Lego + Transformers + Game Boy? Wow, that hits a fantastic nerd trifecta. I love it! And Tetrisbeak is great.
CapnScumbone
what bugs me about kre-o is that i was building transformable toys from legos at age 5....and their products have to be disassembled and reassembled.

FAIL.

So by your own admission, are you going to start boycotting lego now?

Also, people need to get over the kreo transformers dont actually transform train. Plenty of other tf items dont transform but are perfectly accepted in our collections. Action masters, busts, statues, hero clix, etc. its about the characters and the universe.

A 90's model Gameboy counts as modern?
DecepticonSpike
Does it actually transform? If it does, kudos to you!

Well, actually they did have a problem with it They sued Mega Bloks over it years ago, and it actually became fairly well known case law. They lost though, so no sense suing Hasbro now.

They were protected under patent law for three quarters of a century, but the law doesn't protect you forever for your ideas. Eventually they become public domain to give way to competition. It's in the best interest of the consumer.

That's why Hasbro is allowed to do this. Lego had a 75 year head start for their creativity. The action was focused more on Lego's claim that their specific size and shape was a part of their trademark. Trademark is a different area of law, and as it turns out, was generally ruled as not being applicable here.

Get to it Hasbro.
