Collection Intervention New Series Premier August 14th On Syfy

syfy
Collection Intervention follows Elyse Luray, former Head of the Collectibles Department at Christie's, as she helps couples, families and individuals whose pop-culture memorabilia collections from Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica to Catwoman and Barbie have become damaging obsessions, creating financial strife and a huge strain on their lives. Elyse will create a strategy that helps these collectors curate and showcase their collection by assessing where the true value lies and then allow them to decide what's worth keeping and what they can sell. These massive collections include dining rooms stuffed with 30,000 comic books, a garage filled to the rafters with Catwoman memorabilia, and an almost uninhabitable house filled with Transformers. For each collector, parting with some of their collection may free up some much needed space in their home, provide cash windfall to get out of debt, or even just allow a couple to become more focused on their relationship.

Hot Shot.
Oh, surely this show won't make collectors look like obsessed losers who have a problem...
Optimus1138
Oh great, something else to make collectors and nerds look bad...

Nope, not at all.
PorkChopKB

Time to put the parental block on Syfy so my wife doesn't watch this and get any ideas!!! Lmao
seali_me

Surely, collectors will deny or ignore everything. Damn!

"No. My display doesn't look like a shrine to plastic toys."

"No. Having close to a hundred toys is not obsessive."

"Yes, I have a girlfriend."

This is going to be awesome.

Hahahaha.

Now I really need to move my collection from the dining room. Maybe pack up some.

I used to sleep on Transformers Case Boxes.

Wait, what's so bad about it? The fact that it makes everyone looks crazy, or the fact that it exposes that everyone is crazy.
jinx23
Dearest Lord,

Please don't let my wife channel surf and find this show.

Amen

There are collectors who build entire buildings for their collections. Car collectors are the most guilty. They fill barns, garages, lots, and rental facilities with their collection. Ive seen a few sports nuts too that have collections so large that they have no room for their kids. A collector isnt very different from a hoarder to an average person. Personally I get crap from all my friends when they see my shelves full of Transformers. "Its a kids toy" they say. I always smile and ask them when the last time a kid spent 380 dollars on a mere "toy". I also make it a point to illustrate that I KNOW exactly where my money is going. Most people just drink it away on the weekends. Screw what those scrubs think!

i'm sure not all the people on the site are like that but...sometimes i wonder.

well in car collectors defense, they can buy a car for dirt cheap fix it up and display or maybe re-sell for a "rarer" car, they can make a living off of their hobby, also car collectors are usually rich.
RamenJunkie
They should have named it after Hoarders instead of Intervention, for added stigma effect.
seali_me
The name's good. Intervention for this addiction.

I hope the peeps on the show mention fandom websites and how crazy it gets there.
TheTFReview
I do believe SeanxLong is going to be in an episode. I've seen his house and it's quite full of toys.
ORIO
Neat! Imma watch. If they plan on making people sell this stuff or donate it, it will be interesting to see the outcomes
Autobot Burnout
I just hope this doesn't end up just being another version of "My Crazy Obsession".

I'll probably watch. These shows interest me.

Finally a show that will help me understand the mind of a collector.

I can only imagine turning on the TV to see someone that looks like me, but tattooed and on a three-year coke bender, going "what up Transformer fans!"

Getting Facebook messages from friends I haven't seen in years asking how I'm doing because they saw me on some show... "Hey Quentin, you doing alright? I thought I saw you on some show about a Transformers collector..."

*shudders*

Car collectors who sell a car they restore almost never get back what they spend to fix it up especially when you figure in their labor.

but back on topic, please don't let my sister see this show, she is always pestering me about my collection.
seali_me
Hahaha!

I can see my co-workers trolling me about this.

I'm guessing it's pretty hard to scalp a car. Transformers, on the other hand. XD

The wife and I might catch this show just for the lulz. I do have a modest collection but nowhere as overboard as some of the guys showcased so far.
SG Roadbuster
Im. Not too worried. Tis syfy network, home of the magic ever changing timeslot and myserious dissappearing shows. Anyone else miss "Who wants to be a superhero"?
seali_me
A modest collection for "normal" people wouldn't probably exceed more than 20.

The total value for a "normal/modest" collection would not exceed 100$. Hahahaha

Where not see gonna Protoman on the show are we???
FMA1987
Im pretty sure Sean Long is going to be on that show he said they where filming him selling some stuff at a comic book store on his facebook and it was going to be on SyFy i hope they dont make us look like idiots. I mean i can understand if you put that before your family, or taking care of living expensive. It just like any other hobby you just have to keep a good level head. It should be interesting.
motorhead9999
This show could be a disaster, or it could be a great thing, depending on how its presented.

On my strange addition, the focus on that show definitely leans to the "these people are screwed up, lets see how freaking weird they are". Whereas with Hoarders, its more about showing people who genuinely have a problem, and showing their recovery (or at least attempt to) to overcome. Yes, there's the "holy crap, how could they live that way" aspect to it, but its much more humane in how they handle the subject.

Lets face it, anyone who is a collector will eventually have a problem with display status, and how far we decide to take our hobby. Some people insist on collecting every single Transformer that comes out, and in many cases multiples of them (whether it be to collect one sealed and one to open, or army builders). That adds up very fast, both in size and displayability.

About a year or two ago, I came to the acknowledgement that I cannot collect everything, and that for me, there is no point in collecting stuff, just to stuff it in a closet or storage space never to be displayed, nor do i have the money to buy ever larger places to hold my collection. And as hardcore as I am, I'm well aware that there are people who are levels beyond me.

And yes, this collecting hobby can drive people into debt, or divert funds away from things that are more important. How many people out there spend more money on their collection than are investing for a rainy day, into their 401K, or their future child's education?

TLR, it'll be an interesting show to watch, the tone sounds far nicer/gentler/non-judgemental than My Strange Addiction and should be interesting to watch, especially the Transformer episode.
seali_me
The show title has intervention in it and will mention pitfalls from being a healthy hobby to an obsessive addiction.
bellpeppers
I'll probably watch- if for no other reason than to see collections for me to envy.
Grimkid
I am actually in negotiations to appear on a similar show on a different network...When first approached I thought it was a show about fun people, the collecting lifestyle, and awesome collection showcase. But I'm feeling that it may be like this show and portraying collecting as damaging to your finances and social life....what a waste
toaster
Great. My parents will stop buying me Transformers because of this show.-_-

Haloid1177
Oh, this will be good.

I don't have a problem. I don't have a problem. I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM!

Try looking at this show through the perspective of Gender Politics.

There are record numbers of "Men Going Their Own Way" in North America and Japan now and collecting is just one of many avenues where their disposable income is going.

Note (in this clip at least) it's a woman hosting the show and a supposed girlfriend complaining about the collection.

How many of you can realistically picture a show where it's the man in a relationship complaining about a woman's supposedly aberrant behavior and a male host working with said man to "correct" the woman's behavior? I know I can't.

I also find it quite easy to picture this show being used as a cudgel on men who are taking care of business (meeting their responsibilities as motorhead9999 noted)..... used by women who think they're entitled to dictate how a man runs his life in his spare time.
IACON
I hope my wife won't see it...

Oh, this show can only end well.

If what you're saying is true, then think about it- it's Sean Long. How does he look.

That's how they're going to make the rest of us look.
Weirdwolf
I used to have an apartment full of 2000+ TFs, and they were in every room except the bathroom and kitchen. Decided it was way too much, so I sold 3/4 of it, and haven't even come close to getting a collection that big again even though I still collect.
TALLUS76
I do understand some people take collecting to the extreme. Ive had friends that have done it. Usually its caused by a issue in their lives. I can also see if its a issue thats hurting people and their lives BUT heres what i see happening.
We all have collections and we all have certain someones in our lives that dont really understand why we collect. And i see alot of negative being caused from this show. I know its meant to help people but I see it putting a negative view on collecting in general and think this will cause kickbacks in the collecting community. Hope my Mom doesnt watch this. Now Im not the type to put my collection ahead of the good of my family and relationships and bills and important things come first. Collecting is a hobby that comes second. And I know theres a lot of us on here that think the same. I really just dont want this show hurting something we all enjoy doing.
Just hope the people whos collections have become a sickness get the help they need and that it doesnt make to much of a negative impact on collecting.

So it's okay for like 2/3 of the country to waste money on booze and cigarettes, but we get a TV show about people buying toys and that's not okay??? Seriously, this show = epic fail from conception. Think about the concept...let's air a show about people have amazing collections, then tell them they have too much even though the people making that judgement aren't gonna have any clue other than what their "researchers" tell them, then let's air it on a network of people who likely have collections like that...anyone see the problem??? You're essentially telling your entire audience that they have or want to have too much stuff which will put people off from wanting to watch again.

Toy and memorabilia collectors ARE NOT the same thing as hoarders. Yet this show is basically treating them as one and the same. I see this getting canceled before all the episodes even air as it will piss off it's target audience after 1, maybe 2 shows.
Stardust262
Oh joy.
seali_me
The only misgiving I see about the show is the host actually tries to tell the collector the value of it. I think most of us here are already well aware how much we can try to get even for individual ones.

I see the show waking up at least some of the collectors to the reality of this obsession. Recognizing and calling it as such will be portrayed as the first step.

I'm also interested how 3rd party products are going to be portrayed.

Since this is an intervention, this will be a surprise to the person. To anyone of us to be exact.
