Acidfree Gallery via Slashfilm have revealed their next Transformers themed print. The next print, by Tom Whalen, takes its inspiration from the classic 1986 animated Transformers the Movie. There will be two versions available – the regular version (shown at left) will be a three day timed exclusive – they will be made to order based on how many orders are received during this period. There will also be a limited edition, limited to just 86 prints.

Oh, I know you said theoretically. I was just pointing out what the run came out to. That's a great number for a Tom Whalen piece.
I have the prints that Whalen did from the NYCC, one of each Autobots and Decapticons, non variant. I also have a lot of prints just stashed away in a flat file, just waiting to come out; this one I passed on. Congrats to those that did get one!

175 is a fantastic number for a timed release. Still very limited. I also had hoped it would have been a little cheaper than a normal release, but AF is a smaller gallery and I'm quite sure the Hasbro licenses did not come cheap.

That is a great number for those who bought it. I personally thought it should have been in the $35-40 range being a timed release, but what do I know? And no, I didn't really think it would have been a run in the thousands, just wanted to point out that it was a possibility.
I did not purchase, mostly because I already have a lot of prints that are just sitting in a portfolio. Also I didn't like how Galvatron was the main focus of the print. Just seemed an odd choice to me to have the villain be the focal point of the design.

From Acidfree Gallery's Facebook:
"Acidfree Gallery
Final count on the TRANSFORMERS timed edition in 175. Congrats to all those who grabbed this, still a very exclusive number!"

Same here.

I ended up passing on it. I wanted the variant but wasn't around a computer the day it went up. I just find the regular too dark, the variant has a color palette much like the main original TFTM poster. Oh well.

You're right it is. I just put it in my CS6 Illustrator and every single color is a single shape.
Deonasis
yay which scalper should i pick I just didn't have the money for it this time round.

That usually the time frame. Even less with other prints. I've been buying most of these over the last year. Got a nice collection…..with no where to hang them.
soundwave69
Variant sold out in 10 minutes, that's crazy.
UltraMagnus3786
EEFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!! I missed the window for the variant. Damnit for being abroad instead of in NYC.

I was going to bite on the regular but it comes to $65 after shipping to Canada. When it is all said and done, there may very well be 1000 of these made. I have a couple days to decide for sure but the price seems a little high. It is a gorgeous print though.
Aerros1
Picked up the variant because I loved the blues in it. Also picked up the Voltron poster. Guessing the variant sold out in minutes because it went unavailable quick
soundwave69
Agreed. Only the almighty Mondo can get print runs in the thousands for their timed releases, lol.
joshua
I don't think this will run into the thousands; the other Tom Whalen prints they offer (Autobot Invitational and the Decepticon one) are still available. They had a print run of 150 each.
They have also done a timed release with the Kevin Tong Optimus Prime print. That one was 24 hours and ended up being 125 prints.
Thorns2010
Exactly, although with my understanding of the regular version being a timed release, I kinda of feel like $50 is a little high. Theoretically you could end up with a print run in the thousands, rather then the few hundred print size most posters end up being.

Excellent post. I think some people look at these (without ever having seen one in person) and think they are like the cheapo Wal-mart glossies…they are no where near the same thing. The price is very justified when you realize what goes into it and the limited edition sizes.

This was fantastically said, thank you for that. As an artist and one who screen prints (and collects screen prints), let me tell you it is a pain in the ass but the finished product is what makes it all worth it.
soundwave69
Exactly.
soundwave69
Yep, that's exactly what I did. But not at all for the reason you think. In case you didn't notice, he's not the only one who didn't like this, yet he's the only one I chose to reply to. Why? I noticed his deviant art link plastered to his sig, so he obviously fancies himself as an artist at some level. I would expect an artist critiqueing another artist's work (especially one people have actually heard of) would come up w/ something a little more constructive than "boring and overrated." What don't you like about it specifically? What would you have done differently? Things of that nature. His comment came off lame and sad, so I resonded in kind.
