Board member Masabon brings us the latest scan from Japan's Hyper Hobby Magazine. We get some of the same future Takara-Tomy releases from the United Line and Masterpiece Rodimus Prime we have seen before, but it did include a suprise in store. How does a 25 year Rodimus Prime prototype sound? A bigger sculpt than what we got in G1, and the trailer even includes a Teletran"ish" base mode. Click above to view the scans mirrored in our gallery.

Can't wait for the Go-kaiger series. Don't think it will be as good as Shinkenger but seeing all the past ranger will be fun.

wow....that prototype rodimus head is uglier than my mother in law.
chrisr291
Nice, any changes to the release dates of Black Rodimus or the 2 ehobby sets?
Masabon
A talk of "HIRONORI KOBAYASHI" and "TAKASHI KUNIHIRO" which are the TOMY staff to a magazine is carried.

> "HIRONORI KOBAYASHI"
1999 TAKARA entering a company
He deals with a design of the MP series now.

>TAKASHI KUNIHIRO
1984 TAKARA entering a company
G1 "RODIMUS CONVOY" "HOT RODIMUS"
"OPTIMUS PRIME 2009Revenge Ver."
He designed the above

It is what it understood from two behaviors.

The prototype of RODIMUS was the thing which was bigger than the article which TAKARA sold.RODIMUS was designed as a high-priced article at first.
However, size became small for appreciation of the yen of 1980's and a size reduction request from HASBRO.The reason is because it matched the reason with a few moving parts of RODIMUS with the problem of the appreciation of the yen and an American strength standard. There seem to have been damage report many of the toy of early TRANSFORMERS in those days.
The staff of TAKARA seems to have designed RODIMUS firmly.
The hip joint of RODIMUS became firm, and it seems to have followed that the joint of the knee omitted it.What I may show by events is mentioned in these prototype in future.

Finally I introduce words of Mr.KOBAYASHI.
「ハスブロのスタッフも言ってました。『ホットロディマスは好きだがロディマスコンボイは
嫌いだ』だって」
The staff of HASBRO said, too. "I like HOT RODIMUS(HOTROD), but dislike RODIMUS CONVOY(RODIMUS PRIME)"

If a meaning is wrong because I translate it with a PC, I'm sorry.
Protoman
OH BABY!!! I LOVE THIS ALL!!!!!!!!!! All the rumors about it being bigger are true. Wow..... just wow. My mind is BLOWN!

What is amazing is the original face design on the right is COMPLETELY the "Old Hot Rod" design found on the original animation proto cel which was later put into The Ark books.
rhinox1701
Very informative..really appreciate this article. Thank You!!
VitaminZinc
Wow, that head is hideous. He looks... very tired...
Rodimus_Prime
It would have been interesting if a Rodimus Prime toy based on the bigger prototype was released, darn it. Massive change in Transformers toy history..... the what if's. Now we get the Masterpiece 2+ decades later.
Railguard
It would be nice to come out with a Rodimus Prime fig the is show acurate, color acurate, voyager sized, to fit in with the rest of the Universe line. That would be nice. 25 year?? Whatever, as long as it fits this then I will buy it. If its a masterpiece thing then I pass.
Switchblade
Pity they shrunk him down. The prototype not only has elbows, but he'd be closer in size to Galvatron, too.
theestampede
this is really cool, I love seeing this kind of thing.
Superquad7
I'm happy with the G1 that we got, but I LOVE that proto.
malcontentman
It would have been awesome to have an over-sized G1 Rodimus. I wonder if KOTOYS is listening.

...also off-subject, seeing That TFU Tracks with metallic blue paint, and G1 accurate, Firebirebird-esque, flaming, Autobot insignia instead of tribal tattoo, really makes me want to spend the money for the Japanese version
WhiteMocha
That proto is cool! I particularly love the big "radar station/1960's super-computer" that his trailer turns into. I think I would have preferred that to the battle platform.

I think I actually prefer the alternate face-sculpt, too. It's more stern.
Recall
Masabon is currently my favourite board member. Thanks for all the info
alien
Finally Tracks got his own G1 fire tattoo on his car hood!
Coldiron
Is that the official pic of the last prime MP? If so, I see something interesting about the shoulders. Any chance to get a higher res image of that section for closer examination?
Anti Spark
Does anyone know what General Kup will be retooled/repainted into?

If I was in charge of the toy design division at HasTak back in 85/86, I would have sent that prototype back to the drawing board. For a supposed "flagship design" in S3, It's still a POS.

On the otherhand, I can't wait 'til my United Grapple arrives. Sure I'd rather he have a black head (like the G1 toy does), but Grapple should be orange (not dark yellow as the Generations one is) so I guess I'll make do with TakTom's version.
Fort Max
Wow, Jazz and Tracks look really good there but I got the Hasbro one's already and they were much, much cheaper.
Night Flame
Every time I see a shot of that dark Lugnut I get excited. Big Roddy is pretty cool looking too. Elbows? Back then? Amazing.

No confirmation. Speculation is Gears.

In one of these scans it shows a Blue classics Hot Rod. Just looking at it, it looks like the TFCC exclusive Redeco as RID Sideburn.

Is that going to be a mass market Japan release?

Isn't that the toy from the EHobby set?
Josh
man i cant wait for Rodimus!!!!
Driftx3
Wow was Rodimus hideous! Though it does look pretty similar to Hideous Geewon Roddy, which ironically is one of my favorite toys ever.

Thank the FSM that they went with his cannon/trailer instead of teh 60's computer.

Cool, I love the picture of ooo TaJaDor and Accel Booster form on the cover!
scubaboy31
Wow, that Rodimus Prototype is AMAZING! In many respects the design is or the quality set by the smaller Hot Rod toy. Also, the trailer part on the spoiler matches up with the early animation design, finally explaining what the heck that was all about. Really would have been a better toy.
Batman
Wow that Proto Rodimus is really rad. I love the larger size and the computer station is really cool.
conleyh2006
someone needs to make that rodimus prime proto into a real toy blows the original design out of there and he would be more in scale with magnus and galvatron
VengeanceMagnus
That is what we all should have gotten in '86. If they had issues with strength / stability then they should have amended the design, not start over.
Alex5
Loving how the MP Roddy transformation seems to be; flip over spoiler of Hot Rod vehicle mode, park front ways on into the trailer section, and close false winnebago front end.

Shell-former

That Rodimus prototype is amazing. Sigh... What could have been..

That would have been cool, but I'm glad to have gotten the original (in 1987) for $14.99 & tax (a gift for being in the regional spelling bee). The same weekend, my folks got me a MiB Jetfire.

If he were bigger, I might've gotten him even later than I did Magnus (the rattly one with an unpainted head). *sigh* '87 was a bad year for any TF produced before then.

The only thing that would be better than the one I have now (my '87, rebuilt with '86 rubber tires and metal feet) would be a "Faith Leader" style redux of the upcoming Masterpiece version. The scale of the new piece should have it stand as tall (give or take 1" in height) as the original. "Hot Rod mode" should be about the same height as '86-'87 Hot Rod, or maybe "Rodimus Prime mode" should be the one to look its originator in the face.

Correct me if I'm wrong... "Go, Go, Pirate Rangers"!?
(Will they summon the Jack Sparrow Megazord?)

Loving that Rodimus proto, wish it seen the light of day!

I would have like that. Looking at the early stage of this particular prototype it would have been better. But that's not saying a lot considering G1 Rodimus Prime toy wasn't really good to begin with IMO. Nonetheless it would have been interesting if this was released.

No complains from me though considering my favorite character is getting a masterpiece treatment I didn't think was probable months ago....
Dormamu
The proto G1 Rodimus is pretty interesting. A jetpack for the bot, and a radar station for the base mode..... I kinda like that he has cannons instead with the one we got.

But did anyone else notice the MP Rodimus trailer transformation shown? It's a bit of shellformering! You slide Hot Rod in, reverse the windvane, and rotate-slide the cockpit over the back end. That's crazy!

Plus, they have the photo of the TFCC member exclusive Sideburn (under number 5). Looking sharp there.

People have seen it extensively before in the Generations 2010 scans, and prior to that people had figured most of it out.

That's Hot Rodimus Clear Blue version not Sideburn, an e-Hobby Exclusive.
