Toy Fair 1995 Catalog Scans Featuring Unreleased Transformers Generation 2 Toys

2005 Boards member BB Shockwave has shared with us something cool tonight - scans of the Transformers pages of the 1995 Toy Fair catalog. This catalog covered the end of the Generation 2 line, so it shows a whole lot of these early toys that never got released. Showcased herein are toys such as the Soundwave and Jazz Laser Cycles (recolors of Road Pig and Road Rocket, respectively), SGT Hound and General Optimus Prime autorollers (recolors of Road Block and Dirtbag, respectively) plus the Combat Hero Optimus Prime and Megatron recolors and the legendary Megatron & Starscream ATB.

There's also a whole page dedicated to the Go-Bots assortment which was actually released, but weirdness rears its head here with several characters having altered names, i.e. Bumble Bee instead of Bumblebee.

Check out the scans attached to this post for a look at lots of never-released goodness.

Sir Spamsalot
some of these looked really really good too
TacticalBacon
I wish these were released. Too bad they weren't.. I also noticed Laser Optimus Prime has longer smokestacks compared to his final product.
T-Logicon
Cool pics, thanx for posting them!
Blackout32
Thanks for posting these cause this is really cool I think.
Aernaroth
The good news is most of these molds saw some sort of a release, even after repaints and retools, and if only in the Japanese market.
Mewtwo
Now the "Combat Hero" Optimus in the "Ultimate Gift Set" makes sense... I was wondering where those colors came from...
BB Shockwave
Hmm, indeed! I did not notice that!
Superquad7
Oh boy, that's awesome. Thanks so much for sharing that here!

Uhm. That's a totally standard feature on any Transformers toy's packaging that was (co-)designed by Takara. These days it just replaces "Takara" with "Tomy".
Anguirus
Quite funny that just this year Hasbro released a "Combat Hero Optimus" and "ATB Megatron."
EightiesKid
That is terrific, thanks for sharing man! I love the Toyfair catalogs!
BScorpinok75
Would've been cool if these all had been produced. I'd like to see updates to most of these especially the go-bots minus Megs n Prime.
JazzIsBack
how many of these actually got released?

The G2 Go-Bots (Ironhide, Gearhead, Motormouth, Sideswipe, Bumblebee, Double Clutch, Soundwave, Optimus Prime, Megatron, Frenzy, High Beam and Mirage; no idea why the catalog parses most of their names as two words, the packaging spelled all their names except for Double Clutch, High Beam and, obviously, Optimus Prime as one word) all came out.

The following made it to the sample packaging stage:

ATB Megatron/Starscream (link 1, link 2)
Combat Hero Optimus Prime (link 1, link 2, link 3)
Combat Hero Megatron (link 1, link 2, link 3)
Laser Cycle Jazz (link 1, link 2, link 3)
Laser Cycle Soundwave (link 1, link 2, link 3)

Only General Optimus Prime and Sgt. Hound, we only have these catalog photos of.

- Gargoyles - as much as I loved the series, I never was fond of the toys, though I did collect all the non-gimmick toys of characters. I wonder why they did not make Xanatos' armor red-and-grey, like in the toon. And yeah... no toy of Angela, nor the Pack, or the many other allies and enemies. The castle looks awesome, though - I have never seen that one before.
There was a later recolour of the Xanatos toy to give him the red armour. It was pretty sweet. I'd imagine the first run one could have been based on "Xanatos will don armour like his Steel Clan robots" being the sum total of what Kenner had to work with.

I did personally enjoy the toys, but yeah, needed a few more baddies like Oberon and The Pack.

Also, I got that Batman Forever Batcave. Fantastically fun playset. I think it ended up in the loft at my parent's house somewhere, along with a bunch of my other bat vehicles. One of these days when I have the space I'll have to get those dug out. I loved those things.
Bumblethumper
secret origins of pickup truck Ironhide and sportscar Bumblebee.
blackwidow1972
I missed out on those Laser Cycles "Soundwave and Jazz" at the Rochester Botcon many years back they where released to test market that I know guy wanted $75 instead I bought Grandus :'(
Kaijumaster
Oh Gen. Two, what a delightful placeholder you were.
leov36
Thanks for sharing, some really neat stuff here!

Love it! Thank you for posting this!

Nice to see decent scans, the versions that used to float around the internets were pretty low quality.
Autovolt 127
I wonder what made Hasbro cancel some of these toys.

I would have liked Sgt. Hound.
transmuseum
It gets me so mad to realize that I used to have some of that lol
Scaleface
So 1995 was the year Hasbro discovered they could inflate sales by making multiples of characters with popular names? They have 3 Megatron toys, and 4 Optimus Prime toys, all looking completely different!
Mr.Deflok
A car Optimus
A grey Ironhide
A car Megatron
A yellow car Soundwave
A blue Sideswipe

And people complain when Bay did this,

I love the Megadreadwing! Pretty rad that the IDW Megatron has his body shared with IDW Dreadwing Role reversal!
reave
Needs more Optimus'.
Dolza_Khyron
i was hoping to see colored versions of that original laser prime prototype!
Boy Blunder
I love the bullet point on Megatron/Starscream ATB:

New colors and packaging for 1995!

Well, hot damn! Sign me up for ten!

That's what customizing figures is there for!

Also, there was the Ultimate Gift Set repaint of RTS Optimus that was done in the paint scheme of that unreleased Combat Hero color job.

ATB Megatron made it past sample packaging. There were an extremely limited number sold here in Cincinnati. I saw it one time at KB Toys, and almost got it. Stupid young me put it back, because I already had Dreadwing and Smokescreen. It's the second worst toy related regret I have.
Dark Magnus
Hasbro make Tigatron Megatron NAOW!

Wow, I never knew those made it to some stores...great, now I have a new grail.
Solrac333
Yup. I remember looking at these thinking "What the hell happened to Transformers? These look like Gobots." Not realizing that Hasbro bought up Gobots by this time. Love the '84 catalog the best.
Mospeada
I love the TF Go-Bots...that's a great ad.

You are welcome! The guy I bought this from had more catalogues (1984 and 1996), not sure if those got sold or not.

A guy in Romania once told my friend Megatron he had a G2 Soundwave as a kid... which was a motorbike. He was sceptical as back then it wasn't really common info that this toy existed - he thought the guy had some KO instead. But no, afterwards in emails he described it as a Laser Cycle and even had the backer card...
So we bought it and... it got lost in the mail. It was "pay-on-delivery", even, so it wasn't a case of the guy scamming us. Gah! Murphy's law strikes again.

Cool! I only have the black armor version... guess I have one more toy to hunt down. As for the Batcave - I need to buy a bigger flat first.

Just out of curiosity what is your absolute worst toy related regret. This ATB Megatron is rare so I am intrigued by something worst than that.

They got cancelled due to the end of the G2 line.

Sgt. Hound: Yes. So...

The new Scoop would make a great base for a new Sgt. Hound!

A payloader in arctic/urban military camo, what's not to love?

I did the EXACT same thing at a KB Toys just outside Toledo. Exact reasoning. I was in 8th grade, so obviously didn't understand that whole "test market" thing.

As Nevermore says we have most of them on our site, for Megatron ATB and Starscream, as he missed that link

I could say I didn't include yours because you don't have them in packaging.

My mom used to work at Kenner for several years. She quit when I was still really young. While she worked there, she would occasionally bring home a Star Wars action figure or two for my brothers. When I was born she got a few things for me, for when I got older. It turns out one of those things was probably among the rarest Star Wars figures ever made. An unpainted missile firing Boba Fett. It's somewhere in this house, but I haven't seen it in well over 20 years.

I asked about it at a collectable toy shop I used to go to, and the guy said something like that would likely go for several thousand.

The "Gobots" reminded me of the "Tiny Tin" molds - - Ironhide and Mirage especially. I still have a Tiny Tin Prowl, purchased at Food 4 Less (of all places!) in early 2003.

You mean the RID Spychangers (which were later also available with Tiny Tins)? Those are actually redecoed G2 Go-Bots, so they're the exact same sculpts.

What are the average prices of the unreleased Combat Heroes? Some got released (see attached)
Nevermore
Did they actually get released, or did a small number of packaged samples find their way into the hands of collectors?
Shatterblast
^ As far as I know there were only ever packaged production samples for these that found their way to Hasbro employees and then collectors. Same goes for the Jazz and Soundwave laser cycles. Stealth Bomber Megatron is the only "unreleased" G2 toy that saw a very limited test market release.

I can't find any completed listings on ebay to gauge a price, but I imagine it varies wildly; they only turn up for sale once in a blue moon.

Jazz is oddly green in places.
Then we have one of the most odd Optimus Prime repurposes ever - "General Optimus Prime", a green-gray military camo repaint of G2 Dirtbag - complete with US Army star markings. It's odd, but the way Dirtbag's head is painted, with the large "jaw" and these colors, he now reminds me of Animated Bulkhead. "Sergeant Hound" would have been a white-grey repaint of Road Block, not sure how many earth movers the army uses...
Yeah. I'm thinking the toy came first then the identity came second for these. Someone must have realised how ridiculous they were and cancelled them or delayed them until it was too late to release them.
payres
Hound should have been the Green Truck. The White Digger should have been Prime, or better still in those colours, Ultra Magnus - look at the head sculpt
