Original 1986 Battle Scene Artwork on Ebay 1986
Here is a once in a lifetime chance - a piece of original battle scene artwork from Transformers Generation 1 has gone up on Ebay. This piece of artwork was drawn and painted by Jeffrey Mangiat, and was used on the back of all Transformers released in 1986. It's a large piece, 26” X 24” in size, gouache on illustration board. You can check out the auction on Ebay here, but be warned - the asking price is not cheap. But then, would you expect any less from the original piece of artwork that was used for the entire 1986 run of Transformers?

Actually, this is news. It's not everyday a piece of original Transformers art goes up for auction - and this is one of the most iconic ones of all.
Tekkaman Blade:
Out of my price range. Very cool though.
Metalhead:
Holeeeee shit! That picture is awesome, I loved the box art as a kid. If only I had that kind of disposable income.
Waverider:
$7500 and no bidders yet. I wonder as art, if people see this as an investment?
AutobotSkids:
Man, that looks cool. Can only imagine what that's worth.
Triformis:
Very cool, but unless I could pay in person, I don't think I'd bid on a item as high as this from a seller with 0 feedback. It also says you can the piece signed by the artist. I wonder if the artist is actually the seller then? Good luck to someone!

(corrected)

I'm a bit surprised at that being the opening bid, but it's not an unfair price for something like this (I'm sure it will sell for a fair bit more).

Note to buyer: You WILL find a way to get high res scans to Botch!
U.Magnus80:
Wow. Awesome.
Ryotaro:
Johnator:
Very cool!
brr-icy:
damn, that would be a nice piece to have
SmokescreenGT:
That's pretty freakin' cool! Wish I could afford it!
Fosterlager:
I'd love to get a framed litho in this size if prints were ever made, but for now the original is out of my range.
gabumon:
Amazing. I wonder if you can buy prints of this somewhere?
DeathsHead:
Rather a shame that the far superior framed picture shown behind the print for sale isn't on auction. Always thought this was the worst of the G1 box backs.
MACRAPTRON:
Such an awesome piece of history. The painting is amazing, but the perspective on that particular drawing is all wrong and gives me headaches.
03Mach1:
I'd be surprised if Hasbro or Goldner himself doesn't buy this piece of iconic art. It would look hella sweet hanging in his or anyone's office.
Solrac333:
LOVE that art.
Darkwing48:
I've already got this....

Almost.

Its on my Transformer pillow. (Yes I still have it)

It's been wash so much, nearly the colors are faded. The only difference is the angle Rodimus and the other car is coming out. And the trails of weapons fire is apparent. Do any one else have this pillow?

I know what you mean - If that Season 2 Artwork ever hit the 'Bay, I'd consider taking out a loan...
grimlock1972:
whoa very sweet and very much out of my price range
Moy:
This artwork is a clear example of how much change there has been in the transformers franchise.
ORIO:
I couldn't tell you how many hours I wasted as a kid staring at that picture. That would be something special to have.
shibamura_prime:
God I would love to have that. I proudly toted a lunchbox bearing that every schoolday.
LightningZERO:
From a 0 feedback seller?
optimusfan:
Very nice...and you'll earn an amazing $150.00 in eBay bucks at the starting price! I have a lot of priorities ahead of a $7500 piece of art, however. It would be awesome though.
Shin Densetsu:
Good lord he painted the entire thing in gouache? EPIC WIN!
swampert123:
mistake found)>it shows hot rod hiding behind a wall but it also shows him driving on there 2 so yeah that the mistake thing
ninety:
Ones Regular, and ones Target-Master. Not sure about the multiple Broadside's though

Many people think it's a mistake, but it's actually Hot Rod's lesser known younger brother "Scott". The fact that he's in the painting actually makes it more rare and valuable.
samtastic:
Very cool. Anyone know where the first G1 package backing art is? I like the original even better...
Superquad7:
If I had the disposable income available, I'd be mine.
_Galvatron_:
Epic...but too rich for my blood.

I was thinking the same thing
thygriever:
Dude that's freakin amazing! Unfortunately never be able to afford something like this..
Triggerhappy:
wish I had a spare 5 G's..... hmmm... still time to win the lottery on Halloween and win this auction : O
The Madness:
Like many people; I'm unfortunately just not in that market.
But any G1 BOB Art is pure love in my book (pre-Micro/ Ultra pretenders esp).
The abstracted "fisheye" distortion perspective has always set this piece apart.
Good luck to the bidders.
ryan.j:
i'm seriously seriously considering buying this.

a limited run of prints would go some way to covering the costs too
Arcticwave:
Oh the countless hours I spent starring at that artwork when I was a little one. That artwork and a few others pushed me into becoming an artist!
Magnus' Mate:
Truly an iconic piece of G1 imagery. I love all the box art from the 1980s TFs... they just don't make 'em like they used to!
deliciouspeter:
Beautiful...I always wondered the story behind those scenes. Great to know they come from actual real world art.

IIRC, there were multiples of some characters on the 1984 and 1985 box art.

If you look at the *Japanese* box art, there's a red Tracks and a blue one too.
ryan.j:
nice as it is, i've decided not to bid on this.

g/l to whoever goes for it
Fosterlager:
I always LOVED Trypticon's visible head. CREEPY!
ToddJumper:
Would love to own even a replica of that size, but would never give that kind of money to someone with 0 feedback on ebay.. that bothers me. 9 out 10 times I have gotten scammed that way.
Faust:
I had a lunch box with the same artwork. Oh joy!
Rodimus:
I think this is my favorite one. I used to have this on a Lunch Box back in first/second grade.

You and me both!
Killa-B-Killed:
I would have to pick-up in person.
Beautiful piece. Hot Rod is the kicker. Prints would cost much to make???
