Masterpiece MP-08 Grimlock Design Sketches

Masterpiece MP-08 Grimlock Design Sketches grm
A scan of Masterpiece MP-08 Grimlock design sketches has surfaced from one of Japan's Hobby magazines. The design sketches detail both the robot and T-rex modes for the figure. Some of the smaller sketches show the intricate details of the figure, including the flamethrower designed for Grimlock's dinosaur mouth! The scan can be seen by clicking on the image to the left. Masterpiece MP-08 Grimlock is due out in March 2009 in Japan.

If it was an entirely new transform process (ala Classics Grimmy), it wouldn't feel right.

Just to add to that a bit, I'd actually expect the same if we're ever lucky enough to get Masterpiece versions of Soundwave & Shockwave. Their G1 versions are already SO good that some people probably wouldn't be too impressed by their hypothetical MP versions since, just like Grimlock here, the overall transform basics would likely remain very similar.
That's why I think an MP Soundwave is a stupid idea and don't get why anyone would want one (Shockwave too really).

Yeah, why would anyone want a large, MP Prime sized, super-detailed and highly articulated Soundwave?

Soundwave is second only to Rodimus Prime (full space Winnebego version please) on my MP wants list.

agreed! This sketch shows that Grimlock is gonna kick ass as a MP. So happy
I pre-ordered it!

Grimlock looks sick! (in a good way)

I think the next masterpieces would be Soundwave and Hot Rodimus. Hot Rod would have way more possible extras than Rodimus Prime would (Saw, training lazer sword + shield, binocular face mask thing). The number of Soundwave fans alone easily justifies an MP version (MP Ravage would be sweet, but unlikely due to the new universe version).
Liege Prime:
I gotta say I'm in the group that thinks he looks just right. I don't particularly care if he looks anatomically correct just like I don't care if a car alt mode is licensed. I care about the robot mode more anyways, and it seems he looks just like his G1 animation model but with more detail and great articulation- exactly what I would want from an MP as long as he is built as sturdy as Prime.
Torque:
Grimlock looks AWESOME and coming out right around my birthday ^_^

im hoping that the next MP is Hot Rod(imus) for Autobots and either Shockwave or Soundwavefor the Decepticons. the only reason im routing for Shockwave more is cause
A) he hasnt had a G1ish toy since...like 13 years ago. an update is desperately needed and
B) Ravage has just been made to go with Hound for the classics line. if they make a Soundwave MP i hope that they also make as many MP cassettes as possible
Emperor Zarak:
a deffinate maybe
GreenScream:
Beautiful.

And put me down for wanting an MP Soundwave. I must have missed the memo where it says Masterpiece = Super Complex Transformation.

And why does a robotic alien dinosaur have to look like a real T-Rex anyway? Is the design going to comprise his disgusie or something? Accurate or not a dinosaur is not a good disguise.

"Oh hey, look Jim, there's a T-Rex over there. That's pretty cool."
"That's no T-Rex, Bob, notice how it's walking upright and potbellied?"
"Oh my god, you're right! It's an alien! RUUUUNNNN!!!!"
Um... dinobots aren't about disguise. Dinobots are about sheer brute strength.
In Robot mode, they have roughly the same resilience as Megatron or Prime, but in Dinosaur mode, they are close to indestructible. Nullrays, fusion cannons, etc bounce off their hide like it was nothing. Dinobots don't hide, because they are the autobot equivalent of an atomic bomb... it doesn't matter if you see it coming, coz if you can see it, you are doomed no matter what.

Accurate dinosaur mode would be nice, since it's been a good 40+ years since the beer-bellied look of T-rex was an acceptible view. The modern, bird-like view of T-rex shows an animal capable of running down prey at 15mph (as opposed to the plodding 5mph of beer-belly). It wouldn't take much to redesign, and if anything, it would make Grimmy even more formidable looking, with a larger head-to body ratio, and a leaner and more lethal profile.

It would be an instant win for EVERYONE. It would be almost as cherished as a Sharkticon that looked like a shark, rather than a Critter with a dorsal fin.
Fosterlager:
Oh, THANKS for mentioning Sharkticons! MP Grimlock will be able to properly tower over my army of Gnaws! Awesome!

MP Soundwave ?!? That will be awesome. That would be great to see if they would be able to make him w/ a very complex transformation process. I wonder if such a piece would have the cassettes as well.

Oh man

i really have to get him.

When has Takara ever said that? I think that's an assumption fans have made, afterall Megatron is oh so very 'toon accurate. But please do prove me wrong though.
Baird:
I hope he's even bigger than Prime with the same sturdy build. Looks very promising so far.
dark69:
man he looks bad ass!

Maybe Grimlock will be worth $150.

MP Grimlock is looking great!
MP Soundwave would be cool if he was also a working MP3 player!
Rodimus Mike:
I just wanna say I love the MP Grimlock design, and I am so glad I preordered him the
day after it was posted here at BBTS,and some people may say I am crazy for doing
that but you seen what MP-02 went for before they announced a rerelease,$300 or $400,
and he won't even show accurate,it was just his cab mode,no car hauler trailer.

As for these people complaining that he ain't accurate to the real dinosaur, then I
just say "Deal With It",don't come on here and try to talk us out of getting him by
slamming him,so like someone said Let us agree to disagree. As far as I'm concerned
that MP Grimlock will be sitting in my collection soon come March.
soundwaveCA:
Looks pretty neat.

Not everyone. I would have no interest in MP Grimlock with an accurate dinosaur mode. As far as I'm concerned, he's looking pretty close to perfect the way he is.

I agree. if he had a REAL t rex mode, I would hate the figure. that's not the G1 grimlock and isn't that what masterpiece is? bring back all the old classic characters with updated transformations to make them look that much better in robot mode? this logic to me sounds like it would have been best to have used the long nose truck instead of the flat for optimus prime because it's what is used more commonly now. but that just wouldn't sit right with people I think. This grimlock is perfect, no need for change. I hope the next masterpiece is either soundwave or shockwave.

I think it's safe to say that all the Masterpiece figures are just larger more detailed versions of their G1 toy so there is no reason why they would change the overall look of this figure or past and future figures.

Personally I'd prefer a leaner, less upright T-Rex. This one just looks like a generic Super Dino Robot Fighter to me, instead of the ten shades of awesome an updated Grimlock could be.

Aren't MPs meant to be complexly engineered version of the character that TF into realistic Alt. modes?

In the short history of 'Masterpiece series' TFs, there's little apparent consistency of purpose, aside from being larger, more elaborate toys.

Optimus/Magnus: Primarily a more detailed update to the cartoon model in robot mode, truck mode is compromised and a hodge-podge of scales and details.

Starscream/Seekers: Robot mode cartoon-accuracy (color too on the first release) compromised for the sake of a 'smoother' and somewhat more accurate/realistic F-15 jet mode, also probably to help Mr. Kawamori justify his design credit.

Megatron: Tries to strike a balance for a more cartoon-like robot mode without sacrificing an accurate (except for size) Walther P-38 pistol mode. Does an admirable attempt at a near-impossible job, though understandably falls a bit short.

Grimlock: Apparently shooting for cartoon-based design in both modes, as the dino mode has proportions more like the cartoon appearance (smaller head and longer 'arms') than the original G1 toy or an actual Tyrannosaur.

Agreed. IMO, Grimlock's sketches look bitchin.. detailed and an accurate update on the original G1 Toy. Stick to the basics and the designers never go wrong.

And I don't want a Sharkticon that transforms into a simple shark. That's what Cybershark and Sky-Byte are for ... Gnaw transforms into a monster with a shark dorsal fin.

I think you're confusing MPs with Alternators/Binaltech. So far MPs have a mix of realistic and unrealistic alt modes.

I can only imagine the outcry if Sludge was ever given an MP release.
Would the toy need to split into a camarasaurus and an apatosaurus?
jnmx2000:
I'd like a MP swoop actually, man all the dinos in MP form would be awesome

Swoop would be my next choice.

Then Snarl, with Slag and Sludge bringing up the rear.
Baird:
Has there been any information released yet about the size of this figure?

Not yet. So far all we really know are what it basically looks like (though not the color scheme yet), how much it costs, and when it will be released. Not much but it's better than not knowing if we're actually getting a MP Grimlock. As for the other Dinobots, eh, I'd rather get either more Animated Dinobots and/or more Universe/Classics Dinobots. I'm willing to buy a MP Grimlock, as he's my favorite character, but I'm not sure I'd be wiling to buy the other four in MP size.
