February 2009 Hyper Hobby Scans - Masterpiece Grimlock, Disney Label, Henkei, Alternity Megatron HH_094
The new February Hyper Hobby Magazine reveals some new images of the upcoming releases from Takara-Tomy. Masterpiece Grimlock receives a full-page scan dedicated to showcasing his numerous gimmicks and other features. Shown together on the second page are Henkei Cyclonus, alongside Hasbro versions of Inferno and Ratchet. Also shown are some high resolution images of the black and white Disney Label Mickey Mouse Transformer and the little Mickey who rides on top of the robot's head. Alongside this are more images of the early version of Alternity Megatron who is beginning to shape up nicely.

Hyper Hobby magazine scans courtesy of modxtoy.com.
Cory Bauer:
Thank you for the scans.

Grimlock looks like $20. I love him, but the truth is most of Hasbro's $40 leader-class figures are far more intricate than this $150 "masterpiece" figure.
Type-R:
Megatron's swords are just stowed on the underside of the car. I suppose it was a bit ambitious of the designers to want to fit an arm cannon in there initially.
Rijie78:
Some good photos there, ta for posting. More MP Grimlock goodness, that toy can't get released quick enough. Still like the look of Alternity Megatron, even without cannon, but I think the cash for that will now be going on that new Movie Leader Prime..
Feralstorm:
I'm luvvin' MP Grimlock, though Alternity Megs is slowly looking more and more like ass the more pics I see of it.
Ravenxl7:
Grimlock is looking great. I can't wait to see what Hasbro has in store for their inevitable release of the mold. Only chrome on Takara's that bothers me is the red chrome on the sword. It seems pointless to me. While I'm not a big fan of most chrome, all the other chrome looks good on him, and makes sense. It may just be me, but something about Henkei Cyclonus makes him look hilarious. Probably the light coloration on him. Hasbro's looks a whole lot better than that, imo. Alternity Megs looks interesting, but I'm not interested in him. If we somehow get Alternity Optimus Prime here in the states, I might get him, but I currently don't see Hasbro ever bringing the line over here.
Alex5:
I love the job they have done on Grimlock, and will be picking one up on release without hesitation, but I am beginning to wonder where the $150 is in him too.
I'm hoping there is something not picked up yet in translation about materials, size or features to give him that 'got your money's worth' feeling I got with MP Convoy and Megs.
Yaujta:
The more I see of MP Grimlock, the more I dislike the dino-mode. It'd dead-on to G1 cartoon accuracy, but that doesn't make it any better.
I just don't understand why they kept the Barney-mode. They changed Starscream enough to make it look like an updated G1, so why not a Maximum Dinobots-styled Grimlock?
Oh well, until something is reveaed to make it worth the pricetag, I'll just have to be disappointed and pass.

What Leader class figs are you buying? Most of the leader classes out there while detailed to and extent still leave ALOT to be desired in the detail department i.e. the Animated Leader class figs all needing alot more attention hell UM isn't even white.

As for Grimlock he is King while $150 is still steep imo I'll still gladly hand it over for him. I'm guessing he is going to have as much or more diecast then Prime at this point that is the only way I think they can justify the price point

It's not chrome; his sword and gun barrels light up.

it looks to me like he's channeling BWII Galvatron.
shroobmaster:
Fairlady Megatron looks... really lame.

Anywho, where's that pic somebody posted in the last FAIRLADY MEGATRON topic? Y'know, the literally fairlady Megatron? That was hilarious and actualy better than the toy in question.
poorboy8u:
I am lovin mp grimmy.

You're wrong.

Well to be fair, Grimlock's transformation is scout-y, the only truly "amazing" thing is his eye change-thingy and light-up hand, stuff that Cybertron and Movie leaders... and ULTRAS and and... even Universe Deluxe Cheetor! Have done before and better.
SmokescreenGT:
Grimlock is a little high-priced, but I must have him anyway. Good thing I'm getting him for my b-day this year. Probably the only gift I'll get, me thinks.

I love MP Grimlock, I just hope there's a US release so I can get one for a decent price.

I know they light up, that's not what I'm talking about. I was refering to the red chrome on the handle part of the sword. The part imbetween his hand and the blade part. It's clearly a red chrome, and something I personally find pointless.

I am quite happy with Ani-Grimlock. Mickey looks better than MP-Grimlock.

He is quite correct.
Rodentus prime:
MP Grimlock is teh sexy - pity his robo feet don't collapse down more in dino made though.
He's about the only thing I plan on picking up this year (except henkei hound & cyclonus)
ActionMasterZod:
People bitched about Megatron being to hard to transform, now people are complaining about Grimlock being to simple. Jeeze, what do you guys want!

Megs is hard to transform, I broke him . Oh and I am SOOO buying Grimlock.
Liege Prime:
Grimlock just looks great. I don't have any problem with him from the looks of it. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that everything on him is solid and sturdy. The extra price I am hoping is for better quality material.
IACON:
MP Grimlock looks AWESOME!!!1
I can't wait to get him. IMHO he is gonna be money well spent.

Yeah people crying about him being simple, do people not remember every grimlock minus Uni/hen grimlock have all shared the same basic transformation not too many ways to change it, it works and it looks segzey.
RedAlert Rescue:
Anything else of interest in the magazine that's not Transformers related ?

Any new Microman or other robot / sci fi lines ?

and more importantly, it's accurate

Amen, the only reason Prime and Megs had complex transformations was to get a more accurate bot mode with Grimlock its just not needed so why make something complex when you don't need too,

on a side note saw the new nissan z commercial during the football games yesterday that car is sweet looking kind of making me alter my opnion on megs. I think him and Prime well look good fighting eachother, its different and it works.

Oh, you've played with MP Grimlock already? Because he LOOKS simple to transform doesn't mean he is. See : MP Convoy, MP Megatron. Both look like they transform more or less like the G1 version but reality proved otherwise.

OK, I want to put this one to bed, because it's always bugged me: Animated Leader Ultra Magnus's off-white plastic is correct.

Compare the "white" on Magnus to the actual white on Jazz, and you'll see that Magnus does have an appreciable blue tint to him throughout, which is reflected on the toy.
Dragonwolf:
whats up with grimlocks head flipping up in dinomode?

I think that is for Dino mode eye color swamping. I cannot wait wait to purchase Grimlock at BOTCON.
Cheez Doodle23:
Grimlock looks freakin awesome! I like Megs, I just want to see a final version with all the paint apps.

Yup dino head lefts so the eyes can be swapped between red and blue, personally mine is always going to be blue
Switch625:
I'm so glad they added the double-barreled blaster. For awhile I thought they were just going to give Grimlock the sword.
paco608:
i know cyclonus is more g1, but IMO i like the hasbro darker version, causethe pinkish color makes him look like a pansy lol

I totally agree, I like the darker color on the Hasbro version, makes him look more badass!

Have you even seen the transformation yet? Looking at the feet alone makes me think you have no idea what the transformation is like.
dark69:
man hasbros got to do Grimlock!

wow you are rite!
Basketball Jones:
Grimlock looks great, but you know Takara wouldn't make a $150 mold that's difficult to repaint unless Hasbro had an interest in it.

There has to be an American Masterpiece Grimlock coming. I'm guessing it will arrive for Black Friday 2009.

You may want to hold off on the Japanese version when the Hasbro version will probably be twenty dollars cheaper.

Note that those who complain that the figure lacks interesting decals: the Masterpiece figures are not shown with their decals applied. Skywarp and Thundercracker weren't. Grimlock will almost certainly come with an extra sheet of decals for you to personally apply.

If it weren't for the abundance of accessories and that we knew ahead of time that he was in the Masterpiece series, I would be willing to bet that a lot of fans would look at that Grimlock toy and guess he's an upcoming figure for the Classics 2.0 series. He's just the G1 toy with better proportions and articulation.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have him and if Hasbro brings him stateside for a modest price I will pick him up. But when you look at at what Hasbro's dishing out this year in the $40 range, it makes me think Takara's "Masterpiece" pricing is unrealistic.

One Word DIECAST Movie Prime will be cheap plastic thats why he is 40bucks, Grimlock just from the looks is going to be one heavy mofo
Obvious Prime:
Cyclonus looks great. Alternity Megatron looks kinda lame, but I do like his head sculpt. Grimlock looks nice, but I'm still going to wait for the Hasbro one.

Most good IN FACT better than Masterpiece toys are made of that "CHEAP" plastic.
Beemer:
Masterpiece Grimmy is a perfect update to me, worth any price they feel like charging. Absolutely stunning. Thanks HasTak! Can't wait to get one.

I bet I won't spend two hours sweating bullets while transforming that cheap plastic Prime, the way I did Masterpiece Megatron. Whom I've only transformed once.
Twin Twist:
Grimlock looks amazing, let the haters hate.

Also Cyclonus could be the first Henkei I pick up, amazing.
GAUGE0001:
Did anybody (other than me) stop to think that they more than likely seem to be basing MEGATRON'S DESIGN off of ANIMATED MEGATRON? that is the Vibe I am getting from that toy.

GRIMLOCK looks great I can't wait to own him.

Cyclonus stepped out of a Gay Pride parade with Nightstick.

Inferno looks cool, Ratchet not so cool.

Honestly, that's the only "scouty" part of his transformation that isn't..well..scouty. It's not THAT complex though. Just looking at both modes I could easily throw out a few (probably accurate?) guesses of his transformation.

1.Flip/pull the tail out so you can see the black part of the legs
2.Open arm panels and flip dino head down, slide downwards
3.Flip hands out, maybe fold dino-toes back onto arm(They have joints, seems logical)
4.Fold tail along joints to form back of leg. (You can see the tip of his tail folded up JUST behind his knee)
5.Pose, display, whatever, he's transformed.

IMO, to me he looks like a gimmicky-kibbleformer. Aside from the kibble, this robot mode looks good. Other than that though I don't really see much appeal in his upright-dino mode unless someone customized it to be MechaGodzilla
Master Sing:
Grimlock is looking excellent... however I would have prefered the Dino mode to look more like the G-1 figure as opposed to the cartoon.... Oh well...

At least I'll only want one so that I can keep him in robot mode...

If I want the Dino mode, I may have to get the *gasp* KO 'bomander'...

Cyclonus looks great in robot mode, but I like the Hasbro version better for the jet mode...

I'll pass on the Alternity anything that isn't bluestreak/smokescreen... any other character is blasmphemus... plus cop cars make my blood pressure rise...
