Artwork for Unreleased Transformers Energon Optimus Prime and Megatron Redecos

Posted on 11-17-2009 at 02:47 PM by Sol Fury
EnergonSuperOptimusPrimesml
Transformers artist extraordinaire Dan Khanna has posted some very cool artwork on his Deviant Art Account of the unreleased redecos of Transformers Energon Optimus Prime and Megatron. The three pieces of art show Optimus Prime in his normal form and his super mode, and Megatron in all his glory. These pieces of artwork would have been used for the Target Exclusive redecos of these leaders that would have also come with WST Optimus Prime and Soundwave, respectively.

If you like the artwork, then good news! There is a chance for you to own the linework (uncolored versions) of these one of a kind works of art. Check out the auctions on eBay over here for the two pieces showing Optimus Prime and here for the lineart for Megatron.

Digilaut:
Not really a fan of these iterations of the characters, but the artwork is solid!
matrixprime:
Man those are sick! I would have purchased both of those in a heartbeat. Does anyone know if the megatron used the larger U.S. scale or the smaller japanese scale?

i'm assuming the larger scale... it'd make more send to ship prime and megatron together and make them both the same box. i kinda like both paint schemes, a lot...maybe i'll get out some paints and make it happen...
icefox:
It was too bad that the WST line died and never got to the states. That comes in second place after classics as my favorite line in the last ten years.
Autobot Burnout:
Huh, so that's what the Prime repaint was supposed to look like? Interesting, but the all-black limbs kinda put me off of the concept. That, and also the fact I'm making an Energon Nemesis Prime kinda probably has something to do with it.

That Megatron is awesome, though.
Nevermore:

They're both redecos of the US toys.

I've collected all the photos of test shots I could find:

According to Hasbro's website checklist, Prime was supposed to come with Smallest transformers Prime, and Megatron was supposed to come with Smallest Soundwave.

Kaymac:
That Optimus is a MUCH better iteration of the Energon character and mold. The color scheme actually works!
Atlas Prime:
i kind of wanted prime back then but that looks terrible
JAYSCREAM:
damn shame that version of sumo prime never made it out.......
artiepants:
not sure any paint can improve that Prime mold (the artwork is nice, but those testshots are lookin' pretty 'clownish'...) but the Megs is pretty sick. They should do the Voyager version up in those colors for a store exclusive sometime...
ORIO:
That Prime is so awesome. I really wanted that deco

That Megs? Not so much.
SmokescreenGT:
I wouldn't get these, myself, but I like the artwork.
Ktulu:
I seem to remember people not being thrilled when the test shots of the toys showed up, funny to see them desirable now. I admit, I'd probably buy em too.

Art is swanky.
Deceptigtar:
That megatron scheme was released as a luckdraw figure already I know transfan2 has it or unless he has the unreleased figure itself but he's got it

TF2 has the Lucky Draw if I'm not mistaken. Smaller version of the mold, red instead of green, different coloured face.
Dolza_Khyron:
i must say when i saw the picture on the front page; i thought it was optimus primal lol... could it of been a energon version of "primal?"
Blasterpwns:
The artwork looks pretty awesome, also considering the fact that I missed my chance to pick these two up.

I found a gallery of the one you mentioned here:

Transformers Super Link - Lucky Draw Black Galvatron At LuckyDrawTransformers.com

However, I'm not sure if it's the larger or smaller version of the mold, for I own neither.

Here, I found a gallery of a Armada Megatron that has a similar color scheme to the artwork.

Here's what the black megatron looked like:

I like that Megatron
blackout501st:
not that big a fan of the show, but that megatron toy was one of the best in the line. nice repaint to
SpencimusPrime:
Love the optimus primal homage.
moreprimeland:
I'm lovin' this "Prime" artwork..
OptimusGinrai:
Prime looks AWESOME.
Protoman:
This no doubt is the art for the leaked test shot of "Swat" Optimus Prime with the black/white Fire/Gyro/Digger/Submarine and the Rodimus colored trailer.
doomtron:
that added red is working for op
UltraPrimal:
Damn, those are cool! I would have bought them had they been released. Especially if they'd been released with WST figures.
MagnusPrimal:
I like that Megatron. If they would've released one of those, especially the with the smaller mold, I would have bought it. The Prime would be iffier though, I'd have to see it in person to decide.
DJW107PRIME:
A little more green and and Autobot badge and megs woulda made a decent springer. I hope they rerelease that megs as thuderwing in classics that would be dope.

Yep, The Lucky Draw is the Smaller Version Repaint (Black/Red/Gold) & The Unreleased Megs (the one that is based on the artwork in auction) is larger version of the mold.

(I do have both Lucky Draw/Smaller & Unreleased/Larger.)

Megatron artwork looks nice in my opinion,

Scaleface:
Would have been nice if Hasbro could release these as "Universe Energon Series" toys.
Ravenxl7:
Both look good, but Megs looks the best out of the two. Would be cool to at least see the Megatron repaint finally make it to retail, if not both of them.
lotussouljah:
Not going to lie, I really like the artwork, rock solid baby. The colours are all right for all three, really like the black and red Prime. Somewhere, somehow....a Radicon is repainting these guys as such..........
Kaijumaster:
WOW. Energon Prime was an embaresment on so many levels, but thats is a VERY nice paint scheme.
BraveMax:
Santa Prime makes his obligatory once-a-year appearance...
enkidoamark:
probably wouldn't have bought. Didn't like the prime and the original deco of megs (and the SG version) was better. Interesting find, though.
Thundershot:
I'd like to see these two get new heads and released as some kind of club exclusives... What other characters could they be with the right heads?

If these things were made and are still sitting in some warehouse then Hasbro, PLEASE release them. I want to buy them both!

Well, a new head and paintjob for Energon Megatron's mold would be excellent as Universe Thunderwing. A great companion toy for the upcoming ROTF Bludgeon.

As for Prime, he had a truck, helicopter, drill, submarine, and a firetruck. That's one hell of a mixed bag.

I'm going to take a long shot here and say Universe Liokasier. Even though the only vehicles are different (except for the drill), there's only 1 robot, and there are 5 instead of 6, just give him a remolded head and combiner head. That way you can have the combiner head shaped like a lion's and it can flip over the smaller head making it appear like Liokaiser.

Other suggestions would be Menasor (truck), Defensor (firetruck & helicopter), or Computron (drill).

HOWEVER, given the great variety of vehicles, I'd say the best course of action would be to make him into Universe Landcross.

Energon Prime is not my thing.

I don't see the need to retool them. Could Hasbro just let the club release them in a similar method they did with the Seacons? I know this is a slightly different deal, but I think it could work.
Rodr-Evil:
I like that Prime redeco
bny888:
i like op's super mode.
BetaSword:
Well, as much as I like Transformers, the Energon Prime never made me wanna buy it.
Even with new Colors, the Mold is still too disappointing.
The Main-Problem with this Figure is, that it was only designed with the Super-Mode in mind, not with all the other Modes(Vewhicle- and Robot-Mode).

But the Artworks looks fine enough, it just looks way better than the actual Toy itself.

At least, the Show wasn't lying about his modes and dimensions, so that watching it gave me quite a good impression of this worst Prime-Mold(not counting the Redecos of other molds as Prime).
