Matt Moylan has updated his website, Lil Formers, with more entries into his "Dreamslaves" section. As previously updated, these entries delve into the behind the scenes of the failed Dreamwave comics publisher, as told through Matt when he was Post-production manager. The most recent of these articles contains five pages of the unreleased War Within: The Age of Wrath #4! With art by Joe Ng and Marcelo Matere, get a glimpse of what you may have only read about in the scripts sold by Simon Furman at conventions.

Additionally, Matt has a few more updates for Dreamslaves. Read on to learn about Ratchet's red crosses, Stat work and stealing from Devil's Due!

Fascinating indeed.

Great timing. I'm just about done reading War Within for the first time. Thanks!

Wasn't Grimlock "dead" by issue #3, sacrificing himself for the peace process before Megatron arrived?

Dreamwave's War Within stuff is some of my all time favorite TF art, design & story canon, so seeing these finished (yet unreleased) pieces is salt in a wound that has never healed

LOVING the Dreamslaves stuff btw. The Ratchet design & GI Joe stories in particular were fascinating to read.

Dreamwave-era art is and will always be my favorite.

Neat!

Yup, 100%. Still can't believe hardly any of that style managed to find its way over to IDW save for a few one-off issues here & there.

If memory serves off the top of my head, from Furman's synopsis of what he had planned, Grimlock comes back via one of the Seeker clones. Can't recall the details but that's why he has wing kibble.
Sol Fury
Grimlock died in issue #1. However, Grimlock being Grimlock his Spark somehow managed to coalese and eventually moved into one of the Jet Troopers, mutating it into a warped version mixing bits of Grimlock with the jet design. The upshot is implied to be that the body was rebuilt as Grimlock's own down the line.

God, I'd forgotten how ruddy awful DW's G1 art was.

Yeah it's not my favorite either, but I can see why some people might like it.

If only i could buy toys of those War Within designs.. and i don't mean Titanium Crap cause only Optimus was faithful to the design and even him was crappy with all that die cast.

I agree. I have all of the released issues. It had a decent plot and Grimlock was badass. Too bad they never released the last issues

I loved the dw run still got my issues. I also have dons work from the unprinted issue 11 with Elita and company.

Its not just the pencils; its the inks and its the coloring. Vivid and bold colors. And strong shading. Age of Wrath is decent, but the job done over the pencils in the Generation 1 ongoing is the finest example of what I'm talking about. It's how Transformers always should have looked. Every page was rich with detail. It was the best looking book on the stands.

Now? Even when the pencils are tolerable, IDW uses flat coloring and weird pastels. Pages are simple. Shading is almost none existent.

Once Transformers were among the best looking comics on the shelves. Now... well... they have nice covers that kinda remind folks of what the interiors should look like.

Who's the red dude sneaking around with the black helmet? I really remember nothing from this series...

I think he's one of the Turbomasters, but his design seems to be a little more simplified than usual.

I've got a bunch of colored pages from this issue too. I think most of them are marcelo-drawn. Wonder if he'd mind me sharing a few!

*edit*

As others have said, I really miss this series and the art, as well. I really wish it would have been finished. I have all the comic issues still too.

I really miss the artwork of the old DW comics
Max Rawhide
Thanks so much for sharing these !

Dreamwave the company (and esp Pat Lee) were very shady and rotten to the core. But I like the art very much. Sure, angles were wrong on several occassion and esp. with micromasters it was hard to figure out what was happening. But in comparison a lot of IDW's output looks rather bland. With DW there was so much detail in the art. Not just on the figure in front, but also in the background. With IDW (depending on artist, of course) it's often flat in the background. And not just in the TF comics, but also in their other titles. Seems almost like a IDW housestyle: backgrounds should be simple and flat.

I really wouldn't mind if everything that was floating around from unpublished DW work would be collected so the stories could be finished. Some sort of closure for that era.

as above pat lee tarnished dreamwaves legacy but i found the comics to be out standing. I still re read them far more then most of what IDW has ever done . Their web site was excellent and the reason i discovered TFW2005 was cause of DW and got me buying comic books again after a ten year absence. When i discovered they went belly up i was illegitimately sad and i dont think IDW ( despite showing promise currently ) will be ever able to match the hype all those awesome lithographs, posters and that #1 issue was able to do . Don , Guido , Alex and all the countless others efforts are not acknowledged enough . This small sample of what could have been should be reminder of what quality DW did and hopefully a influence to what IDW wants in the future....mind you im not holding my breath .

Maybe IDW can finish it the series up? Didnt they release an Omnibus of the War Within stuff?

Seeing the artwork of these makes me so much more grateful for what we have now.

I’m amazed that we’re presented with images of Ratchet constructed of marshmallows and an Armada comic that’s 40% recycled artwork and people are saying how much they miss Dreamwave and how much better their artwork is than IDW’s.
To add to the confusion further are comments about an IDW ‘house style’ when one of the consistent complaints is the lack of consistent style in the art.

Agreed. The strangest part is that nearly all of these artists have since done work for IDW. Do some people really believe that all of these artists have gotten worse with practice, years later?

It seems to me that maybe some people just want drawings that remind them of the original cartoon. Blocky, bold colors, thick black lines.

I prefer art that facilitates the telling of the story and showcases the individual artist's style.

Man I really miss War Within =/. I loved those designs, I hope someday they release the missing chapters for Age of Wrath.

I wish idea would finish these books out, I totally loved that series.

It's amazing what you can accomplish by promising to pay someone,,,, and then not.

See also, housing market, lottery, etc.

Well, lottery is a different thing. It promises you a chance at winning, and that's true. It's "you pay X amount of money, and either you win or you don't". There's no scam at work here, unless nobody ever won anything and the lottery company just kept all the money for themselves.

[Insert some lame connection between "Just a man", Linkara's "I AM A MAN" and Cobra Commander's "Was once a man".]

I had a great time reading the scripts for AoW 4 and 5, and the outline of 6, trying to envision those scenes. But of course, it would be cool to actually see the whole thing completed.

Strange thing is, in my mind that Flash scene with the Quints was completely mirrored.

FLASH! AH-AHHH!

Was looking at the comments on DreamSlaves #6. I share your sentiments about the ongoing, Matt.
