Simon Furman has posted up a "creator's comments" article on his Wordpress Blog for Transformers Regeneration 1 #85, due out this Wednesday. He goes into detail for the main selling point of the issue, the final, no-holds-barred showdown between Optimus Prime and Megatron, his reasoning for including this particular clash and briefly teases at what is to come. The comments are fairly spoiler-free for the issue - check them out here.

Sound's good. My trip to the local comic store on Wednesday can't come fast enough.

I'm so hugging him next Botcon!

Just by reading previous issues and upcoming covers, any sign of Scorponok isn't a spoiler anymore, if that's the "shock" at the end.

Can't wait. Sounds like it won't be as uneventful as the previous.

I dunno, it seems a bit early for a "one shall fall" moment, I kinda figured this showdown would be at the end of the series.

Still, bring it - lets see the Furman take on how it should end, it'll be interesting if nothing else

So... what will the fan reaction be if Optimus Prime dies at the end of the issue? I sort of doubt that'll be the outcome of the fight, but still. Imagine everyone running the comic book store anxiously excited to see how Prime finally conquers Megatron once and for all and then BAM! - Megatron wins at the end.

I think if Prime dies... Whoop-dee-doo. The Marvel books had plenty of leader characters, and Hot Rod is already being groomed as the next leader.

What I think will happen? Megatron will kill Prime, but then another Autobot (Kup?) will kill Ratchet, which will kill Megatron.

Then act two will focus on Grimlock vs Scorponok.

Act three will probably end up Rodimus Prime vs Galvatron.

Just my educated guesses...

I really wouldn't be surprised with this at all.

Is Regeneration any good? I hate Furman's writing, I think he's an absolute crap comic writer and TF should move on and leave him out of the picture, but it sounds sort of interesting.

This is pure Furman, for both good & bad. So, if you don't like his other stuff, this ain't gonna convert you.

Definite pass then. I don't get why TF comic fans idolize such a terrible writer.

I was never really into comics as a kid, but was into Transformers, so I bought the UK comic.

From the perspective of an eight-year-old me, the Furman-penned stories such as Dinobot Hunt, Target 2006, Time Wars etc were the ones I always used to lap up.

Whether the writing in those stories can stand toe-to-toe with other comics of the day, I don't know. But certainly it's the Furman-written epics I have the most nostalgia for.

He was great in the 80s and early 90s. I would even say his Dreamwave stuff was decent too. His old comics still hold up today as products from their time. I still enjoy reading those old Marvel comics that Furman wrote.

But now that we have RiD and MTMTE, Regeneration One seems more like a cheap cash-in on our nostalgia despite us demanding and petitioning for it to be created. I was one of those who wanted Regeneration One but once we got it, this isn't what I wanted.

Its just retreading over old ground, bringing nothing new to the table. Ultra Magnus and the Wreckers may not have appeared in the old U.S. Marvel comics but they still aren't not enough new ground.

If Regeneration One was the only Transformers fiction you've read or seen in the past twenty years, fine. It would be a decent enough comic that way.

But to those of us who have been reading a lot of Transformers comics over the years and watched the cartoons and movies, an Optimus Prime vs. Megatron battle is nothing special any more. Especially when portrayed the way Regeneration One does it.
