The Dawn of the Autobots is upon us, and this week kicks it off with Transformers: Windblade. After all of the discussion, will it live up the hype - or will it be a disappointment? TFW2005 is here to bring you an early review to give you the answer. The full issue will be released tomorrow - Wednesday, April 16 - but for now, check out our review of Transformers: Windblade #1!

Well I'm excited.
Trek
Can't find this on Comixology to subscribe to. Guess I'll have to add it tomorrow when it comes out.
Omegashark18
Seems interesting, I wonder what Starscream is up to now? Hope Metroplex starts talking again. Also I wonder if we'll see Omega Supreme or Superion?
Novaburnhilde
After reading the review, I can't wait to read it myself. ^.^

If it's as good as it sounds, I hope it becomes a full blown series alongside RiD and MTMTE.
RatTrap1985
The art is undeniably awesome. I can't wait.
Brave Magnus
Definitely sounds like a must read comic. Or at least one that you should give a chance. Thanks for the review! I so want to get my copy. ^^
WoundSave
mecha- great review. really and truly.
Yggdrasil
God I can't wait to get this! So glad that I have 3 books a month to look forward to.

Great review btw!

Can someone do a list of all the female transformers in the comic for me?

Because I'm certain Windblade and Chromia aren't the only ones
Yggdrasil
Also 5$ that Elita-1 is the other cityspeaker/speaker for Caminus.
Honesty
Huh .. I really want these comics - but I haven't collected or bought American comic books since I was like 12 (I'm 30 now).

Also, the preview pic of Windblade with that "omg-sauce . . . dot dot dot" look on her face (the one on front page of tfw2005) -- She looks VERY android and nothing like a robot/transformer (her face from the pic I mean).

Weird : )

Use Windblade as your entry drug. Then go back and read the last two years and wonder "WHY DO YOU GIVE ME JOY ONLY TO CRUSH MY FEELINGS LIKE SO MANY GRAPES"

Comixology. That is the answer

It's just Windblade and Chromia. Nautica and a few generics appear in a flashback.
HeroicC300
^ Thanks. I'm keeping my hopes up for more to appear out of the woodwork, but only as Scott finds the time to make them good.

Well, let's just say, their origin definitely allows a way for more fembots to be introduced.

That face: Either she found her rule34 pics, or she just came to the same realization as Sarah Stone in Mechafire's quote sig

Is WB the sort of female version of Cheetor a 'Teen-bot' or does that artist just have to much anime influence going on in the way they infantalize the way they draw females.

(That is not an attack - I'm genuinely curious.)

I think it's just artist preference, and she's drawing her like that to show her youth and naivety. It was mentioned during Dark Cybertron that Nautica was relatively young and tried to learn quickly, and maybe I'm wrong, but I assumed the same thing about Windblade. I'm pretty sure in the preview it was mentioned she'd never seen Cybertron before the Dark Cybertron crossover, even going so far as to count how many days she'd been there.

Personally, I like the style
WilyMech
I like the style as well. Windblade been on her own with Nautica and Chromia for how long there has been interaction with the group until now. I wonder they been doing for 4 million years or so?
Autovolt 127
Well with this critical reception, this will have to become an ongoing for sure....right?

There may be a chance. Every single advance review I've seen has been pretty positive.
Yggdrasil
It's all in the sales numbers tough. Unless the sales are high enough (at least 9k) and stable enough I bet it'll be enough for it to continue into the future. And the positive reviews even from people who don't read TF comics is surely a great sign for the comic.

If not well at least we're going to get one amazing mini-series. IDW doesn't have many of those...

we will have to wait and see.

My money is on Windblade NOT making it to series, but being re-branded to something like, Transformers: Cybertron or Transformers: Homefront. Hopefully keeping the artist and writer if it goes well.

Well yeah that's the deal you can't literally make an ongoing based on just one character with Transformers that's silly, but if Windblade is a success than the same creative team will be brought into an ongoing.

Windblade is more like a pilot in TV series terms.

Cool

If IDW were to do additional ongoings alongside MTMTE and RID, I demand that there be two, and that they be called 'More than They Appear' and 'Justice, Bolts & Gears.'

Hah!

So far, the reviews seem positive. Hopefully this means we get another ongoing. I really want Sarah to stick around, I can't get enough of her artwork. It'd be nice of Scott stuck around too. The more writers the better.

Is this from the Animated song or something? Wicked!

But first they should run with the title 'Robots in the skies'!
Wrecker217
Those two lines are in fact from TF : Animated.

I need this to happen naow

It WOULD be nice to see Treadbolt actually get some sort of appearance in fiction lol. That was one of my first Transformers back then.

Maybe he literally can never sneak up on people because his footsteps are always accompanied by a loud crunching sound.
Ironhide1706
Nice review, but it's rather premature to say "[It could be overshadowed, but...]" when the other two issues haven't even been released yet.

I'll get this when it comes up on Comixology. Hopefully Ironhide shows up.
NemesisAngel
Well I won't buy it but I'll be more than happy to torrent it to see if it's worth a read

I was kind of skeptical about the idea of Windblade turning into her own series (judging by how 4-part character spotlights have turned out in the past), but I can get behind this.

And then a fifth one "Change Before Your Eyes" in homage to the 2001 cartoon.
shamanking282
Yup, this was amazing. Scott's writing has grown by leaps and bounds. And I never want Sarah Stone to stop drawing Transformers.... Ever.

I'm very sure I remember an Alex Milne cover option. What happened? I'm only seeing three versions, but no Milne? I know I saw that cover, and was sold. Not that the other covers are bad or anything, just wondering if anyone knows what happened to it, like maybe it got pushed to a later issue?
jogproof
oooh that was a fantastic issue and a very nice setup for the rest of the series. I loved the artwork it just works for the story.
Ironhide1706
Up on Comixology. Good read. Feel bad for Ironhide, though.
Digilaut
Read it, liked it.

Still takes some time for me to get used to the writing, I feel it's kind of like how Barber writes, but injected with some background worldbuilding Roberts is so good at. Feels a bit forced here and there, but overall very well done.
Art is gorgeous. Sorry, wish I could elaborate on that. I can't, and don't need to. It's amazingly rich.

Windblade's only arround since Dark Cybertron of course, so not a lot has happened with her yet. Still, thanks to the dialogue and the cartoony designs she comes off less as a mature warrior, much more like a self-doubting young female than in Dark Cybertron. And that's totally fine. I bet some people will find a way to spin this into 'female characters are portrayed weaker', but for me it turns Windblade into a genuine person, so she's already off to a better start than Drift (which I was always ok with, but he improved dramatically for me when he was turned into a more balanced and flawed character in MTMTE).

Funny to see Blurr is struggling with the name as much as we are.

Highly recommended, pick up now!

Maybe I'm tired or grumpy but for me that book was incredibly boring and uneventful

All this epic hype and we get pages and pages of a chick daydreaming

And the big twist is that starscream is acting like starscream??

The Milne covers are on the subsquent issues.

Each of MTMTE #28, RID #28 and Windblade #1 has got a Casey Coller cover A, a sub cover by the interiors artist, and a Livio Ramondelli RI cover.

pass, i'm sure hasbro will make it an ongoingn (atleast for 12 or 24 issues) weather people want it or not, just like when they decided to create the character. because it's their new toy and they've tried really hard to sell it to particular fans and broaden their female audience under many different campaigns. i'm sure i'd give it a try if Elita-1 was there to lead the comic, but this character ruined it all for me, and very much the perception of an industry. (i guess i've read too much about media literacy). so she's gonna stay for the foreseeable future along side many other fembots which are going to appear sooner or later. scott is going to stay and stone is going to stay aswell because the particular fans are just going crazy for them at the moment. i guess for us other fans who don't belong to this category, we'll just wait and see how the game continues and weather we can accept these changes and characters in the future if they are established logically.

There was no big twist- it's already been established that Starscream is going to act as Starscream throughout this series.

This issue was same as any first issue of a comic series or a TV series pilot, it was just meant to set up the plot of Windblade as a whole.

Hasbro doesn't decide what books IDW continues and drops. They wouldn't sink money into a book that doesn't sell just because Hasbro told them to.

And as somebody who couldn't make it more than one and a bit seasons through the G1 cartoon, Windblade is infinitely more interesting to me than Elita One. New characters are always nice, new female characters even more so, since the franchise is generally lacking in them.

Slight problem with that

WE made her

Only ones to blame for Windblade are the fans. Hasbro had said that whoever was made would be given some attentions in comic. We were all very aware of what was coming and we all voted her in.And I do not believe people own that responsibility enough.

I can also confirm that the chances on this getting an ongoing are ENTIRELY dependent on sales and preorders. IDW hasn't got concrete plans for Windblade yet. BH was originally a full ongoing but due to circumstances it was cancelled early, and IDW is waiting to see if people want to read this before they make that decision. I'm not allowed to say where I heard that, but believe me the only people who will turn this from a mini to an ongoing are the readers.
