OPTIMUS PRIME Resigns in New Comic Series

First ongoing comic series in five years begins new era for TRANSFORMERS

San Diego, CA (November 18, 2009) – The TRANSFORMERS enter a new and incredible era as IDW launches its inaugural ongoing comic series, expanding the company’s already impressive collection of TRANSFORMERS comics. Under license from Hasbro, The TRANSFORMERS starts off with two huge events – the death of IRONHIDE and subsequent resignation of OPTIMUS PRIME, the heroic leader of the AUTOBOTS.

“It’s simple and awesome at the same time. If you’ve never read a TRANSFORMERS comic, now’s the time,” said IDW’s TRANSFORMERS editor, Andy Schmidt. “The TRANSFORMERS takes your favorite characters and casts them in new and different ways that every fan can follow and will enjoy.”

In The TRANSFORMERS #1, the AUTOBOTS attempt a daring rescue mission that goes horribly wrong and OPTIMUS PRIME is forced to ask if the TRANSFORMERS have brought more harm than good to Earth. IRONHIDE’s death is the final straw for this noble leader, who turns himself in to the human authorities, leaving the AUTOBOTS leaderless.

The TRANSFORMERS is the first ongoing series in five years, and launches fan-favorite characters into new territory. Critically acclaimed writer Mike Costa (G.I. JOE: COBRA) helms this exciting new series, with intense and action-packed art by superstar Don Figueroa.

To help TRANSFORMERS fans rejoin the world of comics, IDW is also releasing TRANSFORMERS: Continuum, written by Schmidt himself. This special 32-page, ad-free book is now available in stores and runs through all the fun and excitement of the last five years worth of stories that paved the way for the new journey to begin.

The TRANSFORMERS is so action-packed, IDW has created two thrilling new miniseries accompanying the ongoing series to fit it all in: TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE and TRANFORMERS: Last Stand of the WRECKERS, debuting in December and January, respectively.

The TRANSFORMERS #1 (32 pages, $3.99) is now available in stores. Diamond order codes #SEP09 0852.
TRANSFORMERS: Continuum (32 pages, ad free, $3.99) is now available in stores. Diamond order codes #SEP09 0849.
TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE #1 (of 4; 32 pages, $3.99) will be available in stores in December. Diamond order code #OCT09 0954.
TRANSFORMERS: Last Stand of the WRECKERS #1 (of 5; $3.99, 32 page color) will be available in stores in January. Diamond order code #NOV09 0819.

Optimus Prime Resigns

The Transformers #1 Sells Out
Batman:
Meh. I have not picked it up yet, but I can't see Prime quitting for more than a few issues anyway .
Draven:
Bah. It's happened before.
Attacker_Prime:
Whoa. That is a massive plot twist! I hope they bring Optimus back or put someone worthy in his place.
antapp:
What a loada tosh.

"Well, I woke up today and didn't fancy being Autobot leader anymore, here you go Hot Rod, have the Matrix, I'm going to go sunning myself on Nebulos. Let me know how you get on."

IDW - Instantly Despised Writing.
Sledgehammer:
Erm, didn't Marvel do this (for about the duration of one issue, following the 'death' of Ratchet)?

But regardless, they should stick Brawn in command, at least that'd be entertaining (or something).
swampflight:
Who will lead the Autobots from falling into chaos? I'm sure it will be a well thought out decision,it not like they are going to put a Dinobot in charge.....
Ethereal:

He cautions, however, that without change there can be no growth.
Something fans of all types often forget

because that's exactly how they're going to write it, right?

thank christ all other comics are the greatest literature since shakespear's much-loved (and strictly for dour, joyless grown ups) Vacillating Horse-Carts opus, otherwise people might not take the medium seriously.

i for one am looking forward to my son being old enough to discover transformers, comics - and specifically transformers comics - so i can tell him at length how terrible they are now, and how he will never know how good it was back in the day. how special. how important.
Fairlady_Z:
Arise Rodimus Prime? I hope so! And Costa mentioned a love for Bluestreak in a privious interview, I hope that's one of the "seriously under utilized" characters who will finally get some spotlight. Really had no idea about Ironhide spoilers til I read that. Wonder if he gets killed by the humans. Now that I could see really depressing Op, especially after he convinced Ironhide in AHM not to retire. I'm seeing shades of how Op was feeling after Ratchet died back in that yesterday's heroes issue of the old Marvel comics. We all know Op will come back eventually to lead, so I for one plan to enjoy the ride of who gets to be in change in the meantime (Rodimus, please!) and not denouce the story outright. I do feel sorry for Ironhide fans though, especially since we learned another character thought dead will be returning soon.

shibamura_prime:
Isn't Optimus Prime dying, leaving or disappearing now the Transformer equivalent of Jean Grey dying?
Fairlady_Z:
Oh, Op has Jean beat by about 10 deaths/departures at least. ;-) He's the true resurrection king of comics.

Yeah, they did. The funny part was that within literally about five minutes, Prime had to come running back to save them from their own poorly-constructed plan to get him back.

I'll second Brawn being put in command. As long as the Prime upgrade comes with shoulder armor.
Coeloptera:
Looks like Prime resigned so he could surrender to the humans to try and make peace.

Yeah, that'll last.

- Coeloptera
Gryph:
Just that one page makes it pretty obvious he's surrendering, so he can try to settle things peacefully with the humans.
Sioce:
Not difficult to be resurrected when your a truck....
I know I resurrected my 1991 Ford Ranger at least a dozen times.

Don't know if Hot Rod should be the leader though...seems anyone that gets to close to him in battle tends to die.
Maybe in this comic series they will use Hot Rod's spark to bring Prime back.
Seems fitting...
Valkysas:
I understand now. Ironhide and Prime just don't want to be in this damn book. Ironhide just wanted out of it more.
ChopperByrne:
Can't see them giving Hot Rod the matrix, I'd say the alt cover is just to throw people off.

Prowl or Magnus will probably lead.
Kusanagi:
Meh. It's comic books. Nobody "quits" or "dies" very long in an ongoing series. He'll be gone at the very least for the run of a 3-issue storyarc. At most, a year.

Everyone comes back eventually.

lol damn prima donna autobots.
IDW doesn't have the kind of money that Prime and Ironhide are looking for.
Mechafire:
I 'd.

Heh. He should remove his head as a further gesture of peace. Hey, it worked for Fortress Maximus.
...Until the Decepticons reached Nebulos, of course.

Not that there is a Nebulos in the IDWverse any more, of course, because they destroyed it out-of-hand in Stormbringer.

Someone call me when IDW get their act together.

Yeah but Scorponok stole the Headmaster tech, so Nebulos is not needed anymore!
Nevermore:

You think they actually still remember that?
Sledgehammer:
Funny thing is, Draven, you saying that kinda makes me wonder...might not be his head that he surrenders as a gesture of peace, but his engine...

(Or, quite possibly and more than likely, not.)
Dinobot Nuva:

Kinda not really but still?

Or.... ANY important character in a comic dying, really.

Given the way he's quitting, I'd say it's more likely he'll remove his ball bearings instead.

I guess its been a while since he's had a vacation to the afterlife. I mean, at least he didn't off himself over a video game this time.

Why the hell is this on USA Today?

How long has a Prime been able to just well ... quit?

Companies will often pay newspapers to write a favorable article about something new/big they're doing to try to increase sales.
ORIO:
Dammit. I opened this thread with the fear that Peter Cullen had quit or something to that degree.

Instead I get a spoiler for the comic I haven't read yet. FAIL.

No crap. That sucks because I just bought the issue and haven't gotten a chance to read it either. Somebody should warn in the headline that this is a SPOILER!
MGX:
Yeah, major spoiler on the front page...thank goodness I've read it at lunchtime.

I hope this doesn't lead to his head being stuck in a room like in Marvel.

yeah...and the frontpage spoiled it too...but if you read the preview it spoiled it too...spoilers are (cue spooky music) EVERYWHERE!!!
Tekkaman Blade:
The isssue wasn't even written that well, many of the characters are written out of character and prime decision makes no sense based on previous series by the comapany.

Since marvel's G1 comic. he just walked out on the autobots after ratchet "died". because simon furman's prime was a self-hating, overly emotional, eternally pessimistic bastard with no leadership skills.

Yeah, really. I don't care what anyone says, I prefer "GIVE ME YOUR FACE" Prime over Emo Prime any day of the week. He should just paint himself black already and----

Oh waaaaaaiiittt........

Funny thing is how much of his work are IDW basically re doing.

Anyway done before, wont last, depending on who fills his shoes will depend on weather this story is any good, I hope we Ultra Magnus get a fair crack at it this time, the movie sold his so short, lot of interesting bots that could hadle the job well, IDW's Kup might be in line of course we could also have the "wicked cool awesomeness of rise Driftimus Prime... and here have another sword and a thing that people will call a sword but is technically a glave cos you so awsome".

I think this time at least Grimlock is well out of the running, probably fort max and I'd put hot rod down as a real out sider to.
DrawerDemon:
I bet they'll handle tiny parts of this plotline in clever, nuanced ways that we never would've thought of ourselves.
Then I bet they'll ignore established chain-of-command and invent their own "because it just felt right." Followed by 20-30 stunningly out-of-character/continuity moments, and then everybody gets redesigned (again).
Oh, and then Drift appears.

Look at the bright side:
If you're confused by the IDW Continuity, don't panic, cause whatever you're stuck on probably didn't happen.
Conor E:
Thanks for the spoiler warning, bastards.
smkspy:
*Yawwwnnnnnn* Wake me when something interesting happens.
Storm:
What happened to spoilers? I hadn't gotten around to reading this yet and BAM there it is on the front page. Thanks for that.
Valkysas:
blame IDW. they sent out a press release about it. the damn thing is on the usa today website's comic section front page.

anywhere that has comic news, this is gonna be posted.

again. blame IDW.

As much as I would love to see Rodimus Prime. I gotta second Smkspy here and say a big BOOOO-URNS!!!

Hate to say this. But why not do a animated and have more than one Prime. Split the autobots X-men Gold and Blue teams style and have two different books? But that will never happen nor ever work.

No reason the mods couldn't have at least said it contains spoilers and put it within a link
DevilGalvatron:
It's cool that they are trying to do something different, and I really would enjoy some of Rodimus Prime's delightful uncaring leadership. (HE destroyed Paradron practically out of laziness, buy hey Cybertron's better anyway :/). Not getting the books though... I'm hoping for something that follows and streamlines the TV series story more and until that happens comics will always remind me of that retarded pic of Ratchet and Megs fused into one body that made me sad to be looking at the comics to begin with.
