James Roberts More Than Meets the Eye Ongoing Interview

The official Transformers Facebook page has posted an interesting interview with James Roberts, the writer of IDW's More Than Meets the Eye ongoing. The interview covers James' favorite plots and some of the things that he considered his biggest challenges from "year one" of More Than Meets the Eye including the characters James loves writing - no surprise that Swerve is in there - and also the story that James considers to be his personal best.

There's also a tease on what we might expect coming up in the next few months with, as James Roberts puts it, "a Marvel UK style epic" concluding in issue #16, where "you may be saying goodbye to some characters and hello to others." He also teases that this epic should tie off some dangling threads from the first 12 issues.

That's an interesting thought. Going by the events of this issue and the #14 Solicitation, Chromedome will be partially responsible for letting Overlord loose and later he's on the Necrobot's list, so it sounds like his fate is pretty much set - but Roberts is very good at confounding expectations. Well, mine at least.

I've been looking for an old Roberts interview where he listed some characters who had taken on a life of their own, but I can't seem to find it. The only one I remember is Swerve.
Edit: Found it. There only was Swerve. Still, hardly conclusive evidence. Plus, I've never been right about MTMTE's plot twists before.

The only characters that should be untouchable are Ultra Magnus, Rodimus, and Ratchet. Otherwise, it's fair game. I bet they pick up Guzzle and Impactor somewhere down the line.

Hmm. No real important questions asked in this interview. I think I'll go to a convention and personally ask Roberts why he is not using more of the original '84 line up.

nope him, Ultra Magnus, Cromedome, Hound and Dipstick are on the Necrobot's list which i think will start happening in issue 16 and i bet Rewind would love to see the list.

Well, I personally expect the Necrobot's List to turn out in a different way to what we expect. Roberts has confounded every one of my expectations so far, there's always a twist I had not anticipated; Thus I'd be honestly shocked if the Necrobot and his List turned out to be as cut-and-dried as we think.

Remember, everything we know about the Necrobot comes from the Scavengers. Half of them are insane. They could be, you know, wrong.

BTW, did the Necrobot oddly remind anybody of Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged?

Probably because these characters have been used and re-used and re-interpreted over and over again since 1984. Show me a writer who makes me care about z-list characters, and I'll show you a great TF writer.

Hmm, anyone hoping that they collect the remaining Wreckers?

Because I think it'd be cool to see Impactor, Guzzle, Roadbuster and Springer all turn on Whirl and help Cyclonus kill the guy.

They're all either on Cybertron in RiD or aboard The Lost Light in MTMTE. Other than Optimus Prime who is in space and Thundercracker who is on Earth.

Most of the 1984 guys are over in RiD. Or are you seriously wanting the likes of Prowl, Wheeljack, Sideswipe and Bumblebee in MTMTE as well as RiD?

Do you even read Robots in Disguise?
