IDW 2014 Sneak Peek - Transformers: Windblade, Transformers 4 Age Of Extinction And More

IDW is sharing with us what they have planned for the upcoming year (2014). Though it's called a "Sneak Peek", they only offer samples of a few titles but mention what they have in store for us.

For Transformers, we have Transformers: Windblade, which will be out in April next year.

Spoilers:
"Who is Windblade? In the aftermath of Dark Cybertron, Windblade takes the planet by storm—and Starscream’s not happy about her being there! But where did she come from—and what does her secret mean to the future of the Transformers? A powerful new chapter in the Transformers saga begins here!"

Obviously, this ties in with the character created from the Fan Built Bot poll, whose figure will also be coming out later next year. Could this specific comic be her pack-in, and could this have to do with what the previously reported Newsarama article was hinting at? We'll just have to wait and see.

X-Files: Conspiracies will also include Transformers.

But, here's a bit of a surprise. Though it was mentioned countless times that there will be no tie-in/adaptation comic book for Transformers: Age of Extinction, the Sneak Peek lists that there will be one after all! At the moment we do not know whether this is an IDW story of their own or whether it ties in with the movie story.

Check out the IDW 2014 Sneak Peek pdf here.

UPDATE: By way of Twitter, it has been confirmed that Transformers: Prime/Rage of the Dinobots/Beast Hunters writer Mairghread Scott is writing the Windblade comic, while Transformers newcomer Sarah Stone will be on art duties. In an interesting bit of trivia, this is the first Transformers comic ever to have an all-female creative team.

Ah, so Windblade will be the third ongoing?
Mechafire
So Mairghread Scott is writing the Windblade issue? Interesting...

Thank almighty Christ Furman's not writing it.

I doubt it. Seems odd for one character to get her own ongoing. I imagine it is a miniseries introducing her to the IDW-verse and then will incorporate her into the mainstream comics.

Something about her look seems familiar... The G1 episode Face of Nijika comes to mind.

Welp, there's my brain fart for the day. Of course it's a miniseries.

But yes, I actually thought about that Face of Nijika connection a few weeks ago. I wonder if maybe SHE's connected to the Quintessons somehow.

Well, looks like Starscream survives Dark Cybertron, which I actually didn't expect. Not sure how I feel about Windblade being pushed so hard, or M. Scott writing for the main IDW continuity, but I guess we'll see how it turns out.

I actually think it's a good thing. Scott seems to actually give a shit about female characters, and hopefully will not crowbar in a horrendous, forced origin for her.
Sockie
Hmm... it appears that we might have a name for the post-Dark Cybertron status quo as well. "Dawn of the Auto Ots?" (now, is there a "b" missing from there or not?)

She doesn't give a shit.

She'll transform the franchise if that's what it takes to have the fembots be integral. Plus, she does interesting stuff in BH.
Megastar
I still don't get way fembots needed to be explained in the first place.

I'd say she does, though, given some of her past comments.

While the fembots' portrayal in ROTD/BH was by no means mindblowing, at least they were just "there"; a normal thing, without any kind of awful origin to them.
Sockie
Also, looks like a return to Earth is imminent. It's right there on the cover.

Heeeeeell yeah. Screw explaining fembots! Just have them there! There are robot bats, birds, squids, and dogs! That's not explained, neither should fembots.

The way I meant it was that her care and love for the fembots runs far deeper than just 'giving a shit'.

I think we should start calling her Solus, since she's trying to bring back the fembots in roles other than just being there.
T-Logicon
Intrigued by the xfiles... Would love to see some tf integration.

This is an IDW-created character, she will get a big push. Drift was also an IDW-created character too, and he got a lot of initial attention, including that miniseries to explain his origins. I would expect the same treatment for Windblade.

Not shocked about Starscream surviving, it will make a better story how his continued existence is handled, how others will perceive him, how he must cope with his constant bad decision-making. If he dies, that's it, shows over for him. The dead don't tell tales.

That, and he just got a new look, they wouldn't off him that quickly.

Or they're going to just blow it up. Which would be all sorts of crazy.

I'm not so sure. One half looks Earth-ish and one half looks Cybertron-ish. It's weird.

Wonder what McCarthy's working on...

I thought that was just symbolic for action in the issue taking place on both Cybertron and Earth, but I guess there is the chance it could be literal.

Should be a big spoiler alert/ black spoiler bars on the front page...

Done. Thanks.

Oh, and I think the front page is jumping the gun a little by assuming this is what Barber was teasing a few days ago. >.>

Ok so have had a few drinks today, so sorry if I'm forgetful but is she the fan made character that they did on the transformers website earlier this year?
MechaV
Hey, bring it on. We need some more fembots already.

And also the toy.

I'm so excited for that you.

Correct, she is the fanbuilt character.

Yes I think she's the one although the design team added some Japanese motifs that are not part of the poll.

Hopefully they would not screw this up and create another Prime Black Arachnia. That's painful.
Griffin73
Maybe Wingblade is the leader of The Knights of Cybertron?
Griffin73
When I spoke to one of the IDW artists a few months ago, he said to keep an eye out for Elita-1 and the Female Autobots. So there you go... Prophecy fulfilled.

She's got an Autobot badge on the cover though.

I'm very glad to see Windblade's comic. It's nice to see Hasbro keeping their promise.

I'll be curious to see how the story plays out. From what little the description states, it sounds like it will be placed in the Robots in Disguise line up. I'm looking forward to this.

I really do wish though, that this had confirmed the existence of the rumored Arcee-Chromia-Windblade-Jhiaxus wave. I really want all four of those as toys.

REALLY. Huh...
MechaV
We need the female Autobots. I feel like they could be great characters in the right hands (*cough*James*cough*) and given the opportunity to shine.

I hate the Furman basically put an embargo on them with the Arcee story.
AutobotBlu
I respectfully disagree. I wish TFs would stay mostly genderless and leave it out of the universe. There is no need for gendering transformers because they don't procreate. Though, like someone mentioned earlier there are other mis-mashed mutant TFs so maybe females are a freak experiment. Still, I don't think they necessarily need breast shapes or curvy hips signifying female gender, because again, TFs don't need breasts to nurse babies, or child-bearing hips. Afterall, we don't see other bots with giant cylindrical "pistons" between their legs. It's pointless.

i really hope this will come with the figure. any news on the figure?

Theres nothing wrong with Prime's Airachnid, in fact I like her more than any Black Arachnia because she not an misguided Autobot.

I think he's talking about the figure, not the character.

so we are getting AOE comics... good

If so then my bad. I'm still getting over the insanity of the Prime forums.

Hm, read the comic and go to the movie just like the first and third or movie and then comic just like the second.

As do I.

I don't think "gender" should be one of the main topics in a Transformers story, it just doesn't feel right. The cast that exists has quite a lot of "variety" already, with characters that are Blue, Red, Purple and come in many different shapes and sizes. Gender wouldn't serve much of a purpose other than being able to use "She" and "her", I seriously don't think a characters gender is so important. I can fully understand if you like strong, well written female characters, but in a series about an alien species that aren't human?

Meaning, they don't follow the structure of what makes "us" human. Including the Gender roles in our society.

The origin Furman provided made a lot of sense, and frankly? I liked it. I know a lot of other fans don't, but, to each his/her own. To those calling Furman sexist and such just because he did something people didn't expect? Is pushing it. I've heard some utterly childish and almost offensive things regarding transexualism, over a fembot that had literally no purpose in the G1 series, given a radically different origin.

I think Windblade looks cool, and has the potential to bring something very interesting to the IDW-Verse, So far all this is only a little teaser into the future. All we know is that it'll have something to do with Windblade.

Lets hope she doesn't become a Mary Sue.

Just voicing my opinions folks, no need to get upset with me if you don't agree. ^^;

I'm not asking anyone to agree, I'd just like to get my thoughts out there, ya know? As a fellow Transformers fan.

They have to do a LOT to get me interested in a bot made up by IDW, chronicled by two creators I've not heard of. I've been burned by IDW WAY too many times to get on board something like this with no reservations.

IDW created Drift and look where that got them.

A huge multi million dollar multiple title deal with a world wide toy company and a plastic toy version with at least 1 repaint/remold?

Oh yeah that taught them a lesson.

oh god they are bringing in wingblade? disgusting, i do not want that pile of trash character in there

You mean the character who is now absolutely fantastic thanks to James Roberts?

its just, bleh, i love drift, but there is NO WAY to redeem that abortion of a design that is wingblade, they could easily write her to be amazing, but that design is attrocious and can not be fixed
Blitz.
totally forgot about this "fan bot"...wish I was not reminded
Prime_Directive
I still have yet to actually see her design outside of her head and the wing shoulders.
QLRformer
This is interesting. All there is on Wingblade at the TFWiki is a toy-only character from the films.

But this is sort of a milestone – there’ve been only a handful of female Transformers throughout the saga’s history (and some characters were repeated):
- Arcee, Elita-1, Chromia, Firestar, Moonracer in G1
- Airazor and Blackarachnia in BEAST WARS
- Override in CYBERTRON
- Sari Sumdac in ANIMATED
- Airachnid in PRIME

It should be interesting to see what role she plays in the upcoming events.

Now, I wonder why she looks like Nijika... is she some sort of kabuki-bot? Oh well, hope she gets a good backstory. Keeping an eye out.
