Transformers artist extraordinaire Don Figueroa has updated his Deviant Art account with a five page long gallery of Transformers concept sketch goodness! Don's update runs the gamut of his various Transformers related concepts, from unmade Classics designs like Cosmos and Hound, and Transformers GI Joe Crossover designs, through his designs for IDW's Stormbringer miniseries, right up to date with the concept artwork for the ongoing series featured on the variant covers of the ongoing and much more besides (like a look at Menasor from the ongoing series!)

Of interest also is a pre-Stormbringer concept of the Decepticon Bludgeon, shown at left, which is very clearly the main inspiration for the recent Revenge of the Fallen Bludgeon toy.

Check out all the images by clicking here to visit Don's Deviant Art Gallery.

What is your favorite image from this update? Which designs from those tagged as "unused concepts" would you like to see revived and given some love in toy form? Discuss all this and share the love for Don's excellent work on our 2005 Boards by clicking on the Discuss button.

Awesome designs and it looks like I think I spotted what could be Megatron's Ongoing design.
Smokescreen
That Megatron looks fantastic! He makes a great stealth bomber. Unfortunately, it says "Unused design for Megatron" in the artists comments section.
Valkysas
I can't even pretend to be excited.

That's okay, I'll be excited for you.

I really dig these designs. Menasor, Omega Supreme and Megatron look especially great though.
Ktulu
His new design style looks like it fit Megatron well but I still can't dig it for the Autobots
Sepultron
I need a damn toy based on that Motormaster design NOW.

Oh... and the rest of the Stunticons too.

So they can merge.

Into Menasor.

Yeah.
Wheeljack_Prime
I sure hope Hasbro has a few ideas about using that Megatron concept somewhere down the road.
ORIO
HOLY CRAP.

Don mentioned along time ago that he submitted a toy design for a Universe Galvatron that was an Ultra figure and not the crappy tank we got. Is this that design???
Smasher
Nice!

Don sure does some cool work.
I wish his TF\Joe designs had seen the light of day.
Paxtin
I want a toy of this, now.

Hasbro, why can't I has toy?

WOW! That looks cool!
Rijie78
Amazing, two pages and no one complaining about Don's newer style yet. The geewunners must be on a day off

Some interesting bits crop up on his page there, some we've seen before, others we've not. Clearly not all the new designs are as successful as others, but there are some great updates in there; now, if the WFC designs can get toys (and some decent ones too, by the looks of it), hopefully a few of these will get done in plastic.
M3Gr1ml0ck
I so hope he will put online his War Within sketches.
So far, I've collected only a bunch of Autobots and Constructicons and some Insecticons (by Kelsh): I'd love to see his original designs for Dinobots and Protectobots.
Stormcrow
Man ...Bludgeon, Grimlock, and Cosmos look AWESOME.

Not a fan of this Hotrod, or his wolverine claws.
knoted
Cool looking TF's who get pwned by humans.
AniProwl
One of those Megatron designs need to be given a toy.

Come on, Hasbro.
KAGE
-edit double post-
KAGE
I just notice this about the Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime design...the vehicle modes are the same.

I think the sketch design is the one on the first promo poster. I like it better personally.
Opticron Primal
That Ongoing Kup design is pretty funny. The "OLDTMER" license plate and specticle optics and such.
[Wing_Saber-X]
More awesome sketches form Don. Niceeeeeeeeee.

"Storm Bringer" Megs, Bludgeon and Cosmos = :
Elvin Pena
Badass, as usual.
Deefuzz
Bludgeon and Thunderwing are mighty nice.

And Cosmos is still the greatest thing I have ever seen.
Primus
Cosmos really has me wanting to do a 3D model of him and have it printed out as a 6" statue. Really. Damn, that's an awesome design.
Transformed
ATB Megatron, Omega Supreme and Cosmos look the best!

Why Can't I Has A HA Sideways, Or A Decent HA Sideswipe, Or A Leader Fallen, WIth A Huge Staff?
It's Becuz They Don't Listen To Us
Sammael
Want. Stormbringer Thunderwing. Nao.

Also: Cosmos, Omega Supreme.

EDIT: That Kup is hideous, and I dislike the reimagined Autobots from page 3. If we get Generations Wheeljack, I hope he doesn't look like that.
Rayzilla Prime
If all of those designs made it into toy form (besides the ones that DID)...

WANT, WANT, AND WANT.
DJW107PRIME
Thunderwing mos def.

Pretty... lame. That's such a crappy transformation for an ultra class toy, I'm more than happy with the one we got.
Radioactive Ravage
Wah wah wah Don's new style.

I've realized it's not really Bay-ish at all, though it takes some design cues from them. It's just a new level of complexity. Let's face it, Don's art has always had complex panel designs and many different shapes- with the new designs, he's just given the robots feasible robot modes that are sleeker and more organic- even if they are mechanical they need organic modes because they somehow ARE organic. It's a mixture between complex mechanics and simplistic shapes, and its artistically very pleasing, though for those who prefer a more traditional design, I suppose they're revolting. Too bad...

Kup, Rodimus Prime, ATB Megatron, and Prime all need toys.
Blitz.

yeah I gotta say I'd of felt letdown with this as an Ultra (even as a voyager)

I'd of gone with cluster f**k but to each their own.

Honestly don has never had problems with good ideas and a good idea for detail... but IMO something thats missing from a fair bit of the new stuff is the lack of emotion. Nick Roche IMO is the new high lord and master of transformers art, the level of detail is just right and every face has emotion. Dare I say I think all these details don adds to the face just make emotion even harder to read and with some its just not possible
Trailbreaker77
Don's art ROCKS! This is why I love the classics line so much, awesome designs!
icefox
The legends Cosmo that we got last year looks very similar to the one in the picture. If the toy had had just a little more articulation like in the drawing it could have been so much better (and ditching the tail that was added and not in the drawing).
cromagnus
I think Don's work is amazing. Obviously if you churn out as many concept ideas like he does not all of them are going to be winners. jeesh.
i also like the fact that he doesn't just copy G1 designs and add some fluf to update them he actually changes the transformation while keeping the "character" intact. Hi s alt modes speak volumes about his creativity.
Art is about taking risks, and Don certainly does that; whether the fans like it or not. Much respect.
alien
Awesome! I like the way he draw ThunderWing!
Blitz.
While I agree when you make that many pic's not all will be winners, you cant just ask people to not critique a pic based on the artists work load.

yes he took a risk with the new style (I'm not sure it was entirely his idea or/and not part of an attempt to grab the new movie fans eyes by using a similar style to grab their attention) but in doing so he compromised some things that I'd liked about his old style. Also many new elements mean that as a visual medium for story telling it gets a little harder since with many of the new looks I cant what body language the face is trying to show

I will say this (before people assume I'm some sort of hater or troll) it was Don that got me back into transformers and back into art in general with the old Dream Wave comics so I will always be a fan.
shocky the spy
Awesome! Rodimus turns into a Pagani Zonda! Hasbro, Give us That toy!

No this is the figure that never got made that is from the sketch.

Although I am still holding on to hope that one day we will see this figure.
doomtron

This breaks my heart every time I see this. I still don't understand why they didn't think this was good enough for release.
Blitz.
I believe it was supposed to be a Ti toy (a very nice looking one as odd as it seems) but sadly it got cut along with the Shock Wave and Arcee prototypes.
Snoopy Magnus
Menasor and cosmos are pure gold!

Well seeing as he was going to be released in the Titanium line chances are he would have been a floppy mess.

I see it as a merciful demise. I would still LOVE that design in Classics/Universe/Generations form someday.
