Botcon 2014 IDW Transformers Comics Panel

Posted on 06-22-2014 at 02:07 PM by Sol Fury under Comics
We attended the IDW Transformers Comics panel today! The panel featured the creators of all three of the ongoing Transformers comics - John Barber, Mairghread Scott and James Roberts. There was talk about the current series More than Meets the Eye, Robots in Disguise and Windblade along with Transformers VS G.I. Joe, Primacy and Transformers: Punishment along with teasing upcoming projects such as Drift: Empire of Stone and Windblade Returns

Read on for our full writeup!

IDW gave some brief previews for the upcoming issues.

More than Meets the Eye, issue 30 is out this coming week and concludes the trial of Megatron, with 31 being a story set in real time, so the issue is all one continuous scene. Issue 31 is set to feature Drift. Some art of 32 was shown which was a battle scene featuring Whirl and Mainframe. Grimlock will make a return appearance up the line with the rest of the Scavengers in a two part story in the near future. A story returning to the early era of Cybertron involving senators, Functionists etc is also coming up soon.

Robots in Disguise, the main thing previewed was that Jazz will get a bit more focus on 31-32. Other promo art showed Thundercracker with Buster next to Optimus Prime. Verity might also make a return appearance down the line? There are also hints that Soundwave’s early history might be touched on.

Windblade, issue 3 makes you think that Mairghread Scott is evil by her own admission, it’s the darkest issue so far. You’ll get to see more of Windblade’s weapons training in issue 3 and her jewelry will have a significance revealed in issue 4. More of Windblade’s backstory will also be explored in issue 4. Sarah Stone calls working on Windblade a crazy, surreal and awesome

Primacy concludes the Cybertronian War trilogy begun with Autocracy and Monstrosity. This miniseries is going to be a true war story, where you can see what Optimus and Megatron have evolved into compared to what they used to be

Transformers VS GI Joe’s first issue will be out before Comic Con. While the zero issue was the GI Joe POV, by issue 2 it is Transformers heavy. John Barber says Tom Scioli is diving headfirst into the world of the comic. Some preview art shown had Cyclconus, Scourge and Thrust in the series. Another bit of art showed Devastator.

Transformers: Punishment was also touched on. It’s an original motion comic available on the Madefire app, available now and available for free on the Windows 8 version. There will be a big push on it next week. The series is in continuity with IDW comics and has a story where Optimus makes a visit to Cybertron post- Dark Cybertron. Someone is killing Decepticons and Optimus must find the killer. There will be a print version eventually, but the series was designed with the motion in mind, and it’s full-on motion such as doors opening, or when someone gets shot in the head and their head properly explode.

IDW explained that their plan is to have the two main series to be complemented with a miniseries. We have had Windblade, and more miniseries were hinted at.

Previews of upcoming series included Drift: Empire of Stone, which is by Shane McCarthy & Guido Guidi with colors by Josh. It’s planned to start in November. It picks up on where Drift has been since he left the Lost Light, and other MTMTE characters may make an appearance in the series.

The next miniseries, coming in 2015, is Windblade Returns. It’s by the team of Scott and Stone. Could not say much without spoiling the ending of issue #4 of the current miniseries. Everyone very pleased with the tremendous response to Windblade and the miniseries (comic sold extremely well in the IDW booth)

Anthology issues were discussed, but the main problem was figuring out the right way to do it because they’re a hard sell. Spotlights are not part of the plan right now, as they want to find the right time to cover them.

Movie comics are now confirmed as not happening for now as IDW is focusing on the mainline books.

A tie-in comic for Robots in Disguise 2015 cartoon has been discussed, stay turned to see how it plays out.

Lastly, there are currently no plans for Simon Furman to do any further work with IDW at this time.

Not sure how to feel about another McCarthy mini. The original Drift mini wasn't too bad, I guess.

I'm intrigued by this 'Transformers: Punisment' thing. Supposedly available now, but I can't find any mention of it on the Madefire website...
Mechafire
>Another Drift series by McCarthy

Hilarious, can't wait for the rage. I'm excited for it!

>Windblade continuing

Yay!

>Verity in RID

Oh god no...

>Furman not coming back

Hopefully should Furman return, he'll use this time to "get his head back in the game", so to speak.

Awesome stuff. Glad to hear that Drift is coming back with a new series. Transformers: Punishment sounds really cool too.

Nice to hear another Windblade mini-series will be made, and that Sarah stone will do artwork for it. Also curious about the "Early era" story that was mentioned when talking about MTMTE.

"IDW explained that their plan is to have the two main series to be complemented with a miniseries. We have had Windblade, and more miniseries were hinted at."

That's a perfect idea, I really like that setup.

Also, I'm gonna lol if people start hating on Drift again, or call him overhyped, after the hilarious Windblade fiasco.

More comics, YAY! Nice to know we're going to see Drift again very soon.

I like McCarthy's stuff. Looking forward to it.

I'm loving Windblade, and I'm thrilled to see it continued, but please let "Windblade Returns" not be the final name.
Negativedark
Well Drift is in AOE. And more Scavengers and Grimlock, bout time. Windblade's miniseries is doing well, so a second one doesn't surprise me.
Omegashark18
Unfortunately, all us iPad users can't read Punishment.
Kraken
Verity! Yay! In RID? Booooooo!

MTMTE 31 sounds interesting, I get what Roberts meant abou an X-Files episode now. They did a couple of those one camera, no cuts episodes.

Haven't got Windoes 8 so I guess that TF Punishment will have to be skipped for now.

Windblade II next year? Not sure what to think about that to be honest. I'd assumed that she'd be absorbed into the main RID cast. Wait and see how things pan out.

Empire of Stone sounds an interesting sub title for another Drift mini. Hope that McCarthy doesn't fly against what Roberts has done with him.

Yeah, but this new comic is only available on Windows 8.

The report just says that it's free on the Windows 8 version of the app. It'll be available on the iOS app and the online viewer too, you'll just have to pay.

From the Allspark's panel report:

Available on MadeFire app for Windows, 5 part series for free, in continuity, made available to everyone in about 5 weeks, eventually will have print version

I was hoping for a comic that explains more deep about the transition between the 3rd and 4th movie, like what happened to Sam and the others? they just let Bee and the Transformers be killed and continuing with their lifes?
Griffin73
I had high hopes for Windblade but I have been disappointed. I am not into at all. I am only buying to keep up with the story line. Too many titles to follow. I like the two prong storyline approach. I wish they just stick with that. The one-shot spotlights are fun, but I don't need another 4-part series that goes no where.

Another Windblade?

Yay for Drift!

But Drift doesn't suck anymore.

Oh shit, Drift doesn't suck anymore! What if McCarthy fucks him up?

That's kind of incorrect, as it is a wholly separate mini from the first one.
Antimatter
I'm really disappointed that Windblade is only getting another miniseries and not the third ongoing like we hoped. She deserves better. At least it's the same creative team, I'm positive it'll be great, my only complaint is that I want more.

I really hope that Empire of Stone isn't an actual SERIES, like the news post implies. I'm irritated that Roberts finally made Drift an interesting character and now McCarthy gets his hands on him again, and setting the story in the present day to boot. If it had just been another prequel, fine, whatever. The development Roberts has done could easily be undone. I'm sure the art will be good but I'm not really okay with this.

Sad that they can't do an anthology series or more spotlights. Pretty okay with Furman not doing anything else. Curious about the creative team for that motion comic, especially since I've yet to see one done right. Disappointed that there's still no news about the Punch miniseries, Nick Roche apparently wants to write it but there's stuff going on.
Happy about the Transformers vs GI Joe stuff, Scioli's one of my favorite creators.
Glad that Primacy should be over and done with soon, I've not liked a single bit of these old war stories. They haven't been done well.

I'm quite pleased, however, that we'll see Verity again, and more stuff with Grimlock and the DJD.

It's Barber and Ramondelli, and I think they did an all right job.

Man. Barber has to be running himself ragged. I love the guy, I think he does a great job, but- editing MTMTE every month, writing Robots in Disguise, cowriting Transformers vs GI Joe, writing this digital comic, and generally overseeing the licensed comics for IDW? Man. I feel sorry for the guy, his workload is huge.

Verity is returning? YESS!! Loved her in Last Stand of The Wreckers and Infiltration. Don't see why people hate her, she's done as much work as the other 'Bots. In fact, Infiltration happened because of the info that she had. It's for the best that she appears in RiD instead of MTMTE because how would she be back in space when last we saw her was on Earth?

He doesn't oversee all of IDW's licensed comics--only some of the Hasbro ones. (Transformers, G.I. Joe, and I think Dungeons and Dragons?)

I'm kinda excited for Drift myself.

I mean Guido&Josh on the art team is always a nice combo. McCarthy gets a lot of flack for AHM but honestly AHM still have the single best relationship between Starscream and Megatron in IDW.

But seeing how MTMTE characters apprear in there as well I hope that Carthy is able to pull them off or at least co-writes it with Robertrs.

Honestly I really don't care about Windblade series. I don't like Scott as a writer.

Excited for Verity, even if it's RID.
Dista
- Not keen at all on McCarthy coming back. I'm one of the people who was enjoying Furman's run and McCarthy came along and pretty much ruined it. Besides, I really don't like his writing.

- That said, I don't mind if Furman isn't coming back. I just find it objectionable when he isn't and McCarthy is.

- More Windblade? I could go either way and need to see how the current series wraps before I decide if I'll continue there. Not sure if the same character warrants a second series when there are so many other characters. I wonder if Scott will do at least another four thousand interviews to accompany the second series and 'reflect' on it two issues in?

- Always happy with more written by Barber and Roberts.
Omegashark18
Whenever a miniseries ends there's a new right there to take it's place next month. I hope we get Punishment on the iPad soon, cause I've got to read ALL the comics.

I have zero problems with Shane McCarthy. Liked AHM, liked his couple Spotlights, Drift centered stories were a little meh, but I don't mind him coming back. Can't really comment on the rest.
Brave Magnus
Yay! More Windblade! So far I am liking the character, story and far so far! If the level remains, it will be another hit!
Autovolt 127
Verity's coming back? yay! I just hope she doesn't catch the stupid like everyone in RID has at the moment.

Another Windblade mini-series (sweet!) and Shane McCarthy's returning to write his own creation....I hope it'll be good.
grindcore138
The real-time MTMTE issue sounds pretty cool. I know it's sounding evocative of Murder on the Orient Express, but my I can't help but think of the Adventure Time episode 'Mystery Train', and the mysterious goings on are just an elaborate prank to throw Megatron a surprise birthday party
Hooray for Season 2 giving us, like, everything we wanted to see, haha.

If Verity does show up in RID eventually, they should totally get Nick Roche as script/character consultant. He has said he'd like to work on something Transformers in a writing capacity...
I hope this focus on Jazz involves him actually dealing with and coming to terms with killing that one guy so he can stop having random breakdowns about it. I want Jazz, not Emo (Get it, because music genres? Ho ho ho!).

Yay for finding out what Drift's been up to! With the Master of Continuity editing the Transformers books, I don't think we have to worry about McCarthy screwing Drift up or undoing what Roberts has done with him. Whether he's truly MTMTE-Drift or McCarthy's take on MTMTE-Drift, remains to be seen.
I'm still interested though, the Drift Mini-Series was all right really. And Guido's on art, everyone loves Guido, don't they?

Cool to see Windblade getting another mini-series.

Curious to see what Punishment is like. Did they mention who it's written or drawn by?

I know Autocracy and Monstrosity had a lukewarm reception, but I'm still interested to see how Primacy turns out.
Angelwave
I actually excited for the Drift series. And if it gets twisted, I'm sure they'll just simply retcon. LOL

Windblade continuing is great, so far her book is far more interesting take on life on Cybertron, than RID season one.

And Verity....with the way they are handling humans in RID so far....my hopes aren't high.
Cyber Star
Woohoo! I loved the first Drift series so I can't wait for this one.
Murasame
Yeah, Drift! I've been missing him!
Yggdrasil
Btw which Josh is going th colouring?

I mean Burcham is busy with like what 3 other series already, and Perez is doing RID....

Exactly this. I fear that McCarthy will completely ignore the Roberts depiction of Drift.

I (sort of) hate to be that guy, but if James isn't attached, I guess I'm not interested.
Yggdrasil
Also apparently Roberts and Carthy are co writing this.

So there's that as well.

No IDW said that their method right now is two ongoing and a bunch of mini-series )4 to 5 issues) for the foreseeable future.
