An image has surfaced of what might be the color scheme for the Japanese release of the Transformers Classics Astrotrain toy. This version of the character features a more show accurate grey colour scheme in line with the other show-accuarate decos used for the rest of the Japanese Transformers Henkei line.
Our sponsors at BigBadToyStore currently have this item available for preorder at $24.99 which you can see by clicking on the following link: Takara Transformers Classics Astrotrain D-03

Look closer the light gray is used for his upper arms and the two joints in each leg.
Also if you're pointing out extra paint apps the Japanese version has purple hands, but that's neither here nor there as both have paint in spots the other one doesn't.

Personally, I'm glad to have my properly colored Hasbro one. The Astrotrain I had when I was a kid was white and purple, not gray. I like having one that follows that scheme.

$24.99? If it was around $10 I might pick one up.
Glitcher
I think that's stretching the truth to the breaking point. The extra light grey colour on Takara's release is only used for the gun, not Astrotrain himself. Plus, he's missing the extra stripe on his western release's train mode. Although fans are going gaga over the cartoon colours, I personally think the white scheme suits his alt modes better.

Ordered him a while back, and I'm happy to see this.
I'm digging all the Takara schemes. Not better than Hasbro…just different and cool in their own way.

If this one is dull it can't be more dull than the Hasbro version which was basically just white and very dark purple. This one has more colors (Takara – Dark Gray, Light Gray, White, Red, Black, Purple, Yellow, Chrome Purple / Hasbro – White, Black, Dark Purple, Red, Gold, Purple, Silver), and more variety to the scheme. Plus the paint apps are nearly the same (though not identical) so the placement and scheme can't be a what's making him dull.
I for one think he's the best Japanese Classics figures we've seen, if not the best. The Hasbro version is nice, but he's probably my least favorite of the Classics Decepticons (minus Devastator & Soundwave).
I'm really happy that Hasbro went with the old toy/reissue scheme and now Takara is releasing this version, as we've gotten the best of both worlds.
He'll proudly stand with my Timelines and e-Hobby Astrotrains.

This is what I've been waiting for. Pre-ordered!

Personally I love it. I think all 3 modes look great and I'm very happy I never bought the Hasbro version. I'll probably pick this up sometime.
Kimmer
of course hasbro should've done it this way to begin with but at least we're getting the right version of astrotrain finally. still can't stand his dildo mode but it's a must buy for me.
Omnius
'bot mode looks better than the one we got, but I'm not too keen on the space shuttle mode – the colour scheme makes the train parts stick out like a sore thumb.
Nightrain
Damn I might have to import that even though I'm done with Classics. It looks much better than the cheap white one.
eyeballkid
I like my white one, thank you!
Automorpher
Guess that's the closest I can get to a G1 Astrotrain for now.
Soundwarp
Adding this to my list!
Ktulu
Looks great, I'm happy with my white one though

And that would be exactly what I did when I saw these pics.
Astrotrain looks excellent and is a great recolor. Megs… even more so.
