 | | | New Transfomers Alternity Details: Figures to Be 1:32 Scale & Die-Cast | | Posted on 06-20-2008 at 10:16 AM by Tim Formas | In pre-orders for the Transformers Alternity Nissan GT-R Convoy figure at Japanese online retailer Bo-Ya, more details are provided regarding the size and composition of the figures in the line. According to the pre-orders: GT-R transforms to robot. 1:32 scale model of collectible size. Automorph mechanism incorporated for ease of transformation. Heavy appearance making use of die-cast like Binaltech. New series! Red color scheme is for Convoy homage and silver is for the car's signature color.
Therefore, they have confirmed that this line will contain die-cast like their Binaltech line had, but will be in a smaller size at 1:32 scale. The pre-orders continue to confirm that the figure will be available with both Vibrant Red and Ultimate Silver Metal. | | Credit: Type-R of the 2005 Boards! | Views: 4,581 | | Type-R:

| This settles the scale and die-cast/plastic debate about the toy.
UPDATE: TFormers has more info about Alternity: Quote:
We have provided more Transformers Alternity information straight from the TakaraTomy booth at Tokyo Toy Show 2008. Some of the information was revealed earlier but there's more!
TakaraTomy explains Alternity at Tokyo Toy Show 2008:
# Alternity is a different series from Binaltech.
# The size is 1/32 scale so it can easily fit on any desktop. The size is slightly larger than deluxe size figures.
# The pricing scheme was based on today's cost of the various materials used.
# There are two colors of the car because the silver was used to represent a real NISSAN GT-R color that is only available now and the red was chosen specifically because it is a Convoy.
# When transformed, the rear seats becomes the feet, the front seats when folded down becomes part of the armor surrounding the arms and the roof and the front grill have a spring action mechanism. The video demonstrates the spring action mechanism where the front grill is divided into three pieces: right, left and center. The right and left sides encloses the center piece.
# Because the license is heavily under the supervision of NISSAN, we would like sales schedule to start in November but it may be delayed to the end of the year.
# Other Observations: The design of the head is similar to Nike and Fire Convoy.

Well, now that it's confirmed that they're smaller I'm all over this guy...
Chaos Convoy:
Hells freaking yes. 1/32nd scale. These are as good as bought.
Jedah:
So on what scale would these figures be? Sorry i never understood these 1/32 and the rest, are these on scale with the classics figures or taller?

Awww...great. Someone beat me to it....oh well.
Moving on, I see that this site lists the price as 3500 yen....but I thought the price was like 4500. What's going on?? Or is it 4700 yen like it says in the small text? How confuzzling...

Originally Posted by Jedah So on what scale would these figures be? You take the real cars demensions and divide by 32 and you get the toys dimensions. As a side note 3.75 inch figures are 1/18 scale.

Hmm, sounds interesting actually now. Official scale and die-cast. Although this makes the 4 upcoming BT releases a little confusing to me. Maybe they are just finally putting out convoy in metal for BT and using the Decepticharge version of the s2000. I don't know!
Silent_Magnus:
I hope the die-cast metal works out.
optimal_optimus88:
I'm trying to grasp this, half the size but pretty much the same price? umm... no thanks.

How confuzzling... | I think the different reports about pricing have more to do with different retailers putting up preorders for the figure without having a lot of concrete information about it. Than, of course, if you're looking at pricing from an import store... everone on here always seems to forget that you're not actually getting it for the 3500 yen retail, but at the import store's markup price (you know... to cover shipping to the US plus so they can make a little profit?).
RobotoChan:
Not too sure if I fancy the idea of this to be honest.
The size doesn't bother me, if fact a little smaller would mean I can fit more on my desk
The automorph feature annoys me greatly however. It never seems to do anything but get in the way of a really good figure. I seriously hope it is kept to a minimum. Binaltech didn't need automorph, Masterpiece didn't need it, I would imagine collectors prefer to have complex and interesting transformations rather than 2 two alt-to-bot mode figures.
Seems just daft.

Seems just daft. | Weird, I always thought Automorph was the one Transformers gimmick that actually didn't get in the way of the figure. Transforming movie Ironhide and 08 Bumblebee for the first time was amazing.
Also, small diecast toys always = big bucks in Japan.
stevej:
So scale is official. That's interesting. What's annoying is the fact that they've now gone for a scale that would free up the line to be more interesting than just cars (1:32 scale tanks and trucks could be done easily) and they start it off with Convoy... As a car. A proper 1:32 scale approximation of Masterpeice Prime, or even a new movie-styled truck with a more G1 inspired look would have been so much better.
I still need to know if this is a new line or a one-off though.
Deefuzz:
Awesome.
I cant wait to see what other cars/characters we will be getting with this line.
Fort Max:
Coolness, I'm not going to presume it's a full line for now though. It could just be a promotional thing like what they did with Mazda's RX-8 where there was a character colour (Mesiter in white) and a Mazda colours version in red.

That can't be right can it? Alternators are about 5-6 inches and they're 1/24 scale. They'd have to be bigger than an alternator toy to be 1/18

It was hit or miss. Blackout would have been waaay better without it. And as for Masterpeice and Binaltech being examples of toys that didn't need it, I would argue that some of those toys could have used it to make them less frustrating and/or fragile to transform. Does no one remember the hell transforming Binaltech/Alt Smokescreen for the first time? Took me a half hour.
Powersa:
I will keep my pre orders though.
BigRC83:
Lots of great stuff is being released. ShadowStitch:
I'll get it if a cheaper all-plastic solution comes out. I'm not fond of the expensive, heavy, paint-chippy die-cast some people are so enamored of, which is -- let's be honest here -- really just a novelty throwback to a gimmick that rode the boat over from Diaclone to Transformers anyways.
Plus the scale is all wrong. No 1:24? No thanks...
What a way to "Bring back" the Binaltech line...by killing it right out of the starting gate.
SmokescreenGT:
I'm very happy that these guys will be die-cast. Otherwise, they wouldn't be much more than regular deluxes. I'm definitely keeping my preorder for the red one, but I'll probably cancel the silver. I never intended on getting both anyway. I'll still wait for pics of Alternity Convoy painted in both colors before deciding.

What a way to "Bring back" the Binaltech line...by killing it right out of the starting gate. | I feel the complete opposite. This line will last a while, I am done with BT's.
Powersa:
It will be interesting to see if Hasbro will release a sports car Optimus Prime. I doubt it. So I'm keeping my pre orders.
Chainclaw:
I could do without the die-cast, I prefer painted plastic, over painted die-cast or bare plastic. At 1/32 scale the GT-R doesn't seem like such an essential purchase, but the pre-orders will stay unless I get strapped for cash nearer the time.
BumbleVeeNH:
You know now I'm more confused than ever. Happywell, with their 1/32 and 1/18 scale Alternator Wannabe's dodged a bullet on copyrighted figures, now that this "alternity" line is coming out in 1/32, can Happywell do a 1/24 scale GTR?
And yeah I'm on the F*&k Automorph technology bit. Fine for the movie line, but you take out the entire fun of transforming stuff. Not to mention the Conversion difficulty level will get all mucked up.
That being said, I just preordered both GTR's.
Basketball Jones:
Very interesting- I've felt the 1:24 figures were too large.
This leaves the possibility open for a 1:32 die-cast Jazz, who would be the perfect compliment for the Classics.
rizuan76:
I'll just wait & see how this turns out. too many things coming out for 08'..<sigh>

Alternators/BT's are 1/24. 25th Joes, Star Wars, and Indy are 1/18. And those 12 inch RAH are around 1/6 scale. But I'd say that percision in toys is probably not that high.
Think of it like this the 1 in 1/32 is the real dimensions of the thing your reducing in size. The 32 is what you divide the real dimension by to get the reduced size.
So let's say the length on something you want in 1/32 scale is 2 metres long. 2 metres is 200 cm. So divide 200/32 and you get the 1/32 scale legnth 6.25 cm.
Zie:
Hmmm, I'm iffy on die cast and Automorphs are a mixed bag when it comes to being successful in a toy...
I'll wait for a review.
Angel Magnus:
Most Alt/BT figures landed at around 7 inches in robot mode, placing them at 14 feet tall in real life.
At 1:32 scale (which is not "half the size"), Alternity robot modes should now be about 5 1/4 inches, if we assume the transform patterns are not significantly more "lean" or "stocky" than BT (ie: TFA Prowl vs TFA Bulkhead).
artiepants:
hmmm, i'm going to have to see more final pics to make a decision, but if this became a real "line" i think i would be happy. Quote:

The first time i TF'd Movie Ironhide i must have done the bit with his legs 8-9-10 times 'cuz it was just that awesome. Quote:

I wish they'd do some 1/24 Joes, so I can display Snake Eyes with my Alts. Didn't they have "Battle Packs" or something at one point?
Also, what scale is MP Prime? He's close to Alt scale, so much so that most of us display our MPs and Alts as though they were the same series. Still, he's a little bit smaller scale, I believe. And Starscream, well... even if he had measued up to Optimus, he'd have been a teeny jet next to a freightliner. A MP Screamer to scale with Optimus in vehicle mode would transform to tower over him, wouldn't he?
That's also why we got "Gorillascream" in the movie. Had a real jet turned into a robot that wasn't so wide, he would have been twenty feet taller than Optimus.
From Teletraan I:
"Scale in Transformers is, not to put too fine a point on it, screwed.
Virtually no era, franchise, fiction, toyline or other incarnation of Transformers has presented scale in a logical or believable fashion. (The only exceptions are the 1:24 toys for Alternators and Kiss Players, but they have their own problems.) Most fans agree that one must either ignore it or accept it, lest they be tempted to explain these problems and in the process fanwank themselves into oblivion. "
Fit For natalie:
I hope Hasbro releases these in plastic, perhaps at the $15USD price point currently occupied by the Star Wars and Marvel Crossover toys? These Alternity things are undoubtably more complex than deluxes, but not as large as Voyagers, so $15 would be fair.

Alteranators are 1/24 scale compared to their real life car counterpart. The 3.75 inch figures (i.e. "regular size" GI Joe figures) are 1/18 scale to their human counterpart. That's where you probably had the confusion from...2 different scales of 2 different real life sizes. A 1/24 scale of humans would probably be about the size of the old M.A.S.K. figures (maybe too big) or the smaller scale GI Joe Sigma Six figures (maybe too small).
Night Flame:
OK, I'm on board with this news. I've pre-ordered both colors. Now, if they can just carry it and turn it into an actual full-fledged line, I'd be happy.
The name frightens me a little though. Alternity makes me think alternate-reality which makes me think each figure will be just one more alternative reality figure, none of them fitting together. Please don't make it Convoy after Convoy. Give me a full line of 1/32 scale Transformers with Die-Cast, one every three to four months, and I'll be a happy camper.
Eric:
So...they're deluxe-sized Binaltechs? Alright, I can do that. Speaking of Binaltechs, is Takara still going to release the newer ones (Blue Bluestreak, Silver Meister, Arcee, and Convoy), or are they cancelling them now?

Alternate Reality versions of characters... In that situation I could easily swallow Prime as a Nissan. Start mixing things up a little...
Make the Stunticons into an aerial acrobatics team, and the seekers as a team of police cars... Prowl becomes an sleek, black, animated-like ninja bike... And bumblebee becomes a yellow and black Gee Bee... haha...
There's a lot of cool possibilities there!

I would look forward to seeing them there with a red ""out of stock" button.

Abrogate:
I'm trying to decide if this is worth buying or not. First off, for Binaltech and Alternators, I only bought Alternators, partly in an attempt to support Hasbro, and partly because I couldnt afford paying twice as much for a heavier version of the same figures. The Alternators were too large to interact with RiD or Classics, but they went pretty well with BW.
Now, we have Alternators-esque figures that probably can fit in with Classics. So far, we only have news of them in Japan, with die cast, which I won't be buying. If Hasbro markets them in America (and I believe at this year's Botcon, they did hint at "finding ways" to bring Alternators back), I would probably want to buy them, but I guess I would have to give them their own shelf. They're too small for my Alternators, and most of the characters will probably be duplicates of my Classics.
Still, as long as the engineering is as cool as the Alternators were, they're probably gonna be worth having.
Angel Magnus:
I'm glad to see that the two colors are the character's and car's signature colors, similar to Meister, Prowl and Tracks (pretty much what I suspected). It adds some hope that this is more like a full line rather than a temporary everyone-has-the-same-mold like Nike Free.
While I am sad to see the end of Binaltech per se (after having "died" several times), if its spirit lives on in Alternity, with a similar philosophy of detail, realism and articulation, and if they can secure plenty of hot new cars and maybe even take a second shot at the previously uncooperative car makers in the light of the live-action movie, this could be pretty nice. Given how stretched out the Binaltech line was, with many of the vehicles discontinued or significantly facelifted by their second or third use, it was always going to take either repeating characters or re-inventing the line in order to pump new cars through.
Convoy would have been a no-brainer if we'd known it was a new line - there's very few lines where he's not the first out or in the first wave (in un-numbered lines, like Classics). BT was one of the few exceptions, and now BT-22 Convoy and Alternity #1 Convoy bookend the transition from BT to Alternity. BTW, that sounds like the name of a movie.
I do hope they balance the mix of Cybertrons vs Destrons from the beginning.
(Exactly how are we going to use to abbreviate that name? We can't call them Alts...)

I love die cast, I love detailed, but at $50 each, considering I used to get much larger binaltechs at that price, I think I'll be passing on this line. I've got too much invested in my bts to start up on another expensive import-only line. with the US universe/classics, I get mostly the same (realistic cars, good transformations) for 1/5 the price.

MP Prime and Alts
G1's
MP Prime is only a little out of scale with the Alts. So while he isn't exactly 1/24, he's close enough to work.
On the MP jet mold. Yes he's probably 1/64 scale. A fighter jet is probably 3 times the size of a car or 2 times the size of a truck.
