Beast Wars Optimal Optimus Unpainted Black Prototype on Ebay DSCF8991
Here is something that you do not see every day - 2005 Boards member SashaShame has listed an auction for a Prototype Hardcopy Black Optimal Optimus, from Beast Wars. This item, one of only two that can be confirmed to exist, is an "unpainted injection-molded hardcopy test shot prototype", a piece that originally came from the collection of one of Hasbro and Takara's designers. Be sure to click on the link above to check out the auction and a chance to own a rare piece of Transformers history.

TRANSFORMERS OPTIMAL OPTIMUS BLACK UNPAINTED PROTOTYPE - eBay (item 170270385474 end time Oct-19-08 10:53:46 PDT)

I seriously cannot believe I am selling this thing. Good luck!

There are only 2 that I can confirm that exist, and Megamus has the other one!
DoubleClouder:
Is that a hardcopy, because it looks like it's molded in black and orange plastic (which would make it a testshot)
ultraconvoy:
Beautiful item

Yes, supposing I am using the correct terminology, this is an "unpainted injection-molded hardcopy test shot prototype". Boy that's a lot of words!
blue death:
So I'm just gonna say this is the coolest thing ive ever seen! i ahted that god-awful color scheme of the final optimal toy. this thing is so badass, its like Optimal Nemesis.

I totally agree! The best part is the fact that it's injection molded in these colors. No worries over custom paint chipping! It just rocks! Hmm. since I know there's a 2nd one out there, if this is Optimal Nemesis, would the other be The Fallen Primal?
Takara_destron:
Wow that looks nice.
Covenant:
Nemesis Primal!

Sol Fury:
Impressive. If I had that kind of money spare I'd certainly be considering this, purely as a piece of Transformers history.
saberconvoy:
Aww man if only i could get it.

It looks so cool. !!!!!!!!!!

Its so expensive and yet just in time for Halloween.
dmc2008:
What can this be compared to, size-wise?

If I recall correctly, he should be around Leader class. Of course it was years ago since I saw it in the shops. And I dont have it so its noty accurate.

But that is a very nice piece. But too rich for my blood.

I had to pay out my hoo-ha to get it in the first place. Believe me, I thought long and hard about how much to list it for. Partially, I based the opening bid on how much similarly rare TF items go for, and partially on my need to at least break even!

Leader class would be a very good comparison. Essentially, he's about as tall as G1 Metroplex or G1 Omega Supreme.

He is a piece of history for sure! I recall an interview with the designer who said that it was the design he was the most proud of. He had one of the black versions on his shelf. It took me five years to find it. I hate to let it go, but I really do have a house to buy, and a dying car to replace!
Tekkaman Blade:
Those colors are much better than what we got. I was amazed they made him soo cool looking in season 3 of the show in spite of the colors and design. If it hadn't have been for the show, I'd have never bought the figure.
dark69:
wow he looks realy good
Tman978:
Is there a snore smilie here?
TheSpacebridge:
Very nice

It's not a hardcopy though, it's a first shot

A lil overpriced too, if it was a hardcopy then the price would be right, bit too much for a first shot

Hitch

This

Hardcopies are usually the term used for the larger than production items that the molds are created from not the test shots, the COA identifies it as a test shot.

This is a hard copy
Darkwing48:
Is WhizBangToys an authority on test shot toys. I'm unimpressed with their bare website. But for me to even shell up 2000 for this thing I need more proof that this is legit. Especially since KOs are hitting the market.

It's my opinion so don't be offended. It like buying a Ferrari from a repro dealership with it's own papers and not Ferrari's service records.
KING KONVOY:
I've always wanted a black repaint of optimus primal. may be we can get it in the universe line! Nemesis Primal in black & blue, black & gold, black & red, black & green, black and purple or black & silver. this is the closet things we have to a LD Optimus primal at least as far as I know. It's definitely one of my favorite molds.

Whizbang are long time dealers in test shots and prototypes from my recollection.
ultraconvoy:
Still a beautiful item but yeah I agree with hitch
JCz28:
I hope who ever gets it know how lucky they are.
Scourge_151:
Wow! If he'd been released in those colours (some detail added of course) I'd have bought that in a heartbeat. Not for that money though, wish I had that kind of cash anyway never mind enough so I could spend over £1k on a toy!

Thank you for the info! eBay will allow me to update the listing as long as there are no bids on it, and I want the description to be as accurate as possible!

From what I can gather from the guy that owns the other one, he has what could be termed a second shot (if that really is a real term). Mine has no electronics, but just filler plastic whereas his does have working electronics.

I can't argue with that logic. Whiz Bang Toys is one of the primary consigners for Hasbro. My recommendation is to contact Hasbro to confirm this if you need the reference, of course. But for those that don't wish/can't afford the item, that would be kind of a waste of time unless you're just curious.

When I first got the item, they must have had something like 500 prototypes, testshots, and rarities up on eBay. This was in 2000. I'm sure that other folks on the boards here bought stuff from them.
SashaShame:
I totally should have posted this earlier!

10% of the final auction price goes towards supporting the American Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation. Frankly, I have a very close friend who suffers from this disease, and being able to do nothing when he is in terrible pain frustrates me mightily! Even when he goes to the hospital - which is to say quite frequently - the doctors can't do much.

So I figure that this auction is good for a very "Prime" reason in that not only can some of the money that's not going into bills and such for me (yeah, I know, the 90% I keep), but perhaps some of you nice folks out there will read up, and perhaps consider helping to support what I personally consider a very worthy cause.

Granted, I have other auctions going that support the ASCAF, but none that have gotten so much attention in so little time. So if you find yourselves chatting about the price, please do remember that at least 10% of it is going to a super good cause!

But what if suddenly we get a Universe 2.0 Nemesis Primal? Huh? Meditate, my friends, meditate...

I thought I saw a custom done on here where someone painted their Optimal Optimus black with green highlights. Looked pretty cool as far as coloring went!
Astroscream:
Does anyone know how much this was originally sold for?
MushroomPrime:
The original toy?

$20

umm, no. It was purchased through whizbangtoys on ebay and I was wondering if anyone knew/remembered how much it originally sold for? (i.e, the subject of this news article)

...Catch up? He was the one who asked the question. I'd say he knows what he meant better than you.
megamus:
Ok, a lot of talk from a lot of knowledgable people. I know Paul and Paul knows prototypes. He is correct this is a test shot, however. This testshot is a different molding from the production model. There are different types of test shots. They use prototypes to show what the toy will look like and give a visual. Sometimes the size is different and is referred to as a 2up. To show all the detail, very few of those are produced. Next would be the right size and sometimes hand painted and sometimes not sonic welded together. Finally you get the right size, molding and everything. It is then molded in whatever color they want to use at the time. Although I think this coloring is pretty cool it could have been random. Usually at this point they are also stamped. Sometimes they change something in the molding and that is the case here. The molding on the battery cover is different fom the production model. Everything else including the stamping is identical (other than the colors of course). How do I know this??? Because I own the other one. Although mine did come with electronics I do not have the armor, I just used a production model accessories. How do I know this is real because of how I got it. I live near Cincinnati where these toys were taken to Kenner's / Hasbro's main office. I have had many prototypes, test shots over the years from all lines including Star Wars. I obtained this a number of years ago. I posted pics of it here. I do know what I am talking about and although I cannot say for sure how many are in existance I can say that there is probably a set of armor out there!!!!

SashaShame:
And you know, the other one doesn't look bad at all with the grey armor!
Rdfnd1253:
Nice figures the both of ya! just curious and not trying to change the subject, but could this be the prototype to primal prime as well and not optimal optimus?
MushroomPrime:
do redeco's even need prototypes?

After looking at mine, Primal Prime and Optimus Primal I would say no. The design of the battery cover is different that both Primal Primal and Optimus Primal. Both production models of Prime and Primal are identical so I would say this was an early design for Optimus Primal. I doubt they would have changed the design to this one as it is more fragile and not a good design. The production design is easier to open and replace batteries.

Primal prime and Optimal optimus are supposed to be identical except for paint apps...hasbro released primal prime for beast machines just because Optimal optimus was selling very good and they wanted to continue that streak if possible....I have both and the armor and body parts look identical...

Exactly, I may have worded it incorrectly but that is what I am saying. Both production models are identical. I do not know about the armor as my first shot is missing the armor but the only difference I noticed was the battery cover and section.
Rdfnd1253:
Idk...I was told the primal prime figure used the Japanese takara version of Optimal optimus mold and not the the US optimal Optimus mold. But I think primal prime is also a hair shorter than optimal, his missiles I believe are slightly remolded and i think the battery compartment was different.

I'm just curious cause if thats the optimal optimus prototype, then does a primal prime prototype exist? Like I know for the BW dinobot repaint they did, they had a brownish color prototype thanks to a pic from a friend on here. SO i believe they make new prototypes for each figure even if its a repaint.

I could be wrong though!
Rdfnd1253:
Megamus were you the one who submitted the pics to STA's website?? or was it sasha?? Maybe another one is out there if it wasnt one of you 2 guys who submitted the pics to STA's website

The pics on the STA are of mine. They come straight from the auction that I bought it from. Sorry if I dashed anyone's hopes of a 3rd one being out there!
megamus:
I sent an email to Bickmore asking him if he wanted pics and never got a response. I've spoken to him a couple of times at various Botcons regarding it and he seemed to really want pics but.... Oh well..
