TFW2005.COM’s very own Kickback had a chance to interview Derrick Wyatt, one of the guy’s in charge of making your favorite characters in the cartoon of TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED.
Learn more about Derrick’s career in animation, what makes him tick, his thoughts and feelings about leaks, oh, and some stuff about Transformers Animated. Then again, maybe you don’t care about things like teasers for Shockwave, Waspinator, Jetfire and Jetstorm, or Rodimus Prime. Or things like the changes they made to Blurr for Season 3.
Or maybe you do.

Great interview! Mr. Wyatt seems like a very nice guy (also, uberTransformersgeek!). Would definitely love to read more of these kinds of interviews!
Good job!

I bet you probably didn't know that I can outrun a cheetah in a foot race when you made that post.
Carrying a truck.

I think you misunderstood s250 about Blackout.
He said Blackout looked like a Beetle. Not that he transformed into one.
And he certainly does look like a beetle in robot mode.
And for Spittor. We've only seen his cybertronian mode. Which is a walking tank thing (METAL GEAR?!) that sort of looks like a frog. We don't know if he's going to get an Earth mode.
BB Shockwave
Also, don't forget when we first heard the leaked rumors about Blackout and Spittor, the guy said Blackout transforms into a huge beetle and Spittor into a frog… so could be at a later point in the season, they end up on Earth and BA somehow makes them semi-organic.
I guess if she can't cure herself, she'll make others to be like her… starting the Predacon army?
Man, Wyatt seems such a great fan – he knows a lot about TFs, from G1 comics to japanese cartoons – it's good that the animation of the new show is in such good hands!
Kickback
It was a real pleasure working with Derrick for the interview. It took about two months from start to finish, with writing up questions, researching his work, talking to him on a semi-regular basis, getting updates on things, suggestions on images, etc.
I had no idea he was going to spend his time right before Thanksgiving to draw up an Animated Kickback. That is AWESOME and I have the large, un-watermarked files saved as a little momento
I can honestly say, having met and spent a lot of time with Eric Siebenaler (lead Animated designer from Hasbro) and having spent a lot of time talking with Derrick Wyatt (character designer, art director for Cartoon Network) that we have, literally, two of the BEST PEOPLE POSSIBLE in charge of Animated.
But you can't leave out Marty Isenburg, Vickie (Hasbro), Billy (Hasbro), and all the others that put time and effort in to the Animated series (the Cartoon Network designers that were listed in the interview).
And of course, the guy with the green light power, Papa Bear Archer
Glad you guys liked the interview. I tried to ask questions that were open-ended, not yes/no questions, and worded questions that we could get real answers to. Not things like, "Will Shockwave be a regular character in Season 3?" … that's boring. That's a typical "You'll have to wait and see" answer that does nothing but waste the time of the interviewer and interviewee.
Kudos to some of our staff that also came up with great questions

Never mind

That's what I was thinking the, years apart in training.
Brave Magnus
I'm bursting in joy XD. But damn, that info sounds too promising. Come on, hurry up, season 3!!!!

Good read!

IDK I kinda hated how everyone looked the same with different clothing and hair.
Like Barbie dolls you see, the same skeleton for everybody.
Silent_Magnus
Unless there was some amnesia/memory incident then I doubt Jazz and Prowl have met before the episode "The Elite Guard".
Although I guess they could have been trained hundreds of years apart, and their sensei just didn't mention the other.
Sideswipe80
I bet Dai Atlas will be Prowl and Jazz's instructor.
Silent_Magnus
Don't give Derrick all the credit.
Thank Eric Siebenaler and the rest of the guys at hasbro and takaratomy for making the designs translate to plastic so well, and Irineo Maramba is also starting to design some of the characters.

FAN-TAS-TIC interview. Kudos to the Grasshopper of Death and to Mr. Wyatt for all his answers.
This is the best interview I've read in a good long while.
I figured he'd be younger. It seems us fans who were in the double digits age-wise back in 1984 are more willing to accept status quo's shaking such as TFTM and Beast Wars.

Derrick Wyatt is the best Transformers designer ever. I mean look at how stylized his designs and yet they are still transformable as toys. That takes a lot skill right there and i applaud him for it. There is sooo much personality in his characters. If Mighty Orbots ever comes back Derrick should work on it.
AniProwl
Well, a bunch of people said Spidey is too skinny or too young-looking and people complain about the eyes as well.
Anyway, that's discussion for another forum.
General Tekno
How are Spectacular's designs controversial?
They kept quite a few the same (Spidey, Sandman, Rhino) while reinventing others to be cooler (Vulture) and updating other designs (Goblin, Shocker)
AniProwl
I thought Megatron's title was Lord of Destruction and Galvatron was Emperor of Destruction.
Anyway, I hope this answer will be answered eventually to this question by some one in the too business.
How come cartoons are so controversial despite who the cast and crew of the cartoon is? (Like the designs of Animated and Spectacular Spiderman or the premise like Wolverine and The X-Men and the new Iron Man toon)
Maybe, because we've been spoiled by the Timmverse where character designs look perfect and the premise was what the audience wants.
General Tekno
Well, if Megatron is Emperor of Destruction, it only follows that he'd have Generals of Destruction.
