New Images and Review of Upcoming Transformers Animated Ultra Magnus user58195_pic710_1215528707
Our own jtaurus has gotten his hands on a prototype Leader-sized Animated Ultra Magnus, and has been kind enough to write up a nice concise review of the figure. Also are included are new images that he shot of the toy. To read the review and look at all the images, click the DISCUSS button below.

Paladin:
I just realized something- Ultra Magnus is the only Autobot (thus far) who actually carries GUNS.

A mark of his leadership/veteran status, perhaps???

Well, as other have pointed out in other threads (just don't want to claim credit when it's not mine to claim ), the autobots under Optimus' command were space bridge repair bots, not warriors, at the time of their arrival. And Jazz went the ninja-bot way (can't remember what they call it), so it makes sense for him to not have guns.

But Sentinel Prime just seems like he wouldn't mind carrying a gun. He's the one I don't quite get.

He prefers being upfront and personal

Prays for super supream sized Omega.... hold the cheese, extra pickles.
Mechafire:
When will this fig be out? I am DYING for it!

The only thing bad about it, as far as I can see, is he is taller than Megs, who should be the tallest figure after Omega Supreme.
jtuarus:
was there ever a shot of megs and magnus together i dont think there was but the withdrawls can leave a memory blank. but no really i dont think we ever got to see who was taller magnus or megs. maybe you can gauge from others scale in the show but i cant wait to see an actual show with megs vs. magnus.
mx-01 archon:
No. The only onscreen encounter Magnus had with a Decepticon was against Starscream. Megatron was hovering overhead at that time, observing.

And even then, Magnus was down on the ground most of that scene, so even comparison against Starscream wasn't too possible. And I'm pretty sure when they were bringing him to the ship, it was Prime's crew transporting him, not the Elite Guard.

I don't think you can do this, because animated doesn't always have the best scale continuity. So unless it's an obvious huge difference, I don't think we can say who is bigger.

Peaugh:
Hooray, got him today with Sentinel Prime, and he's frakking awesome.

Super cool artillery truck mode, ESPECIALLY with all of his weapons deployed:

He feels small for his size in vehicle mode (just like the rest of the Elite Guard!), but I think that's just because he's squat. He clearly fits with other leaders:

Transformation is fairly involved with some neat bits. Possibly the most satisfying transformation out of all the leaders, partly due to the end results:

He still has access to all of his weaponry in Robot mode:

Here's a shot of the Elite Guard together:

And all of the leaders. Ultra Magnus is the tallest of them all!

And yes, while it doesn't affect the voice effects at all, Headmaster fits on Ultra Magnus as well:

This is EASILY the best non-Prime repaint Ultra Magnus we've gotten. Hell, possibly the best Ultra Magnus EVER (although the upcoming City Commander armor could change that.) Currently my number one Animated toy, and he's going to be hard to beat. I HIGHLY recommend picking him up if you get the opportunity.

Video review available here:

Peaugh:
Added some red highlights to Magnus:

Nothing drastic, just enough to give him a little more pop in both modes.
kenm2474:
^^^^^ I was thinking of doing something like that but I dont know? Thats allot of red. I am thinking painting all you did Red Black.

What's wrong with your shoulders? Mine are fine.
Veloxiraptor:
I notice his helmet/forehead looks pretty crooked in those pictures...Is that a part of his animatronic feature?

Yeah, it rocks to the side during his facial animation. It DOES sit a little straighter than that normally.
Vangelus:
So let me preface by saying this is one of the most fun Transformers I've messed with in ages. Let me concretely assert my incredible love for how this toy was done.

That said, there are a few niggling things that irk me only because the toy is otherwise so excellent.

-Shoulders! The joints are all there and they look great at rest, but when you start posing the guy it gets very easy for his shoulders to look like Titanium G1 Magnus (ie: set too far back on his torso).

-Would've loved a wrist joint to totally complete his hammer pose possibilities.

-Talkie chest button sets off the noises just by touching it, which means you can't sockpuppet his mouth while he talks unless you hold it in and risk rubbing paint off.

-Hammer needs another folding section on the handle! If it had just one more, it'd be long enough for double-handed wielding.

-Leg ratchets make it a bit difficult to get him standing between "looking down" and "looking up", kinda like Leader Megatron.

-Wish the magic red button did things in robot mode.

-Wish the hammer had mighty and godlike electronics.

Those things aside, this is -still- a majorly recommendable toy. Easily my favourite Animated figure to date.
Vangelus:
Here's a couple pics:

THE THUNDERMAGNUS PIERCES THE HEAVENS WITH ITS CRY

"My torso is a longrange death rack."

ROCKETLASERMAGNUS

He CAN deal with you.
Optimus747:
As soon as I saw that this was in stock at BBTS, I ordered one. I've been looking forward to it ever since then, and when the UPS truck showed up today, I was pretty pumped.
TF:A Ultra Magnus is, unquestionably, the _best_ Ultra Magnus figure made in the history of Transformers. G1 Magnus was a cool character, but his toy was a brick (though it looks cool, in a statuesque way). RID Magnus was really cool, but a bit flawed. Most other Ultra Magnuses have been little more than white and blue repaints of an Optimus Prime mold (the exception being Titanium G1 Magnus).
This one, however, has it all. Awesome alt mode, awesome robot mode, awesome battle modes, cool features, you name it. The hammer (Magnus's almighty Pimp Cane) is a pretty cool weapon; I don't recall seeing many Transformers with hammers as weapons, so that's neat. The lights and sounds are okay, I'm not usually a fan of electronics in TFs, but at least Magnus (as well as the other Animated Leaders) has a show-accurate voice. Magnus looks imposing in all modes, suitable for the leader of the Elite Guard.
Posing is a little difficult, but the one I've got him in now is pretty epic, like he's about to mash a few Decepticons himself.
The light blue instead of white is a non-issue once you see this in person. The only minor negatives in my opinion are the arms/shoulders, which are a bit far back, like G1 Titanium Magnus (as Vangelus mentioned) and the slight posing limitations.
Overall, one of the best and coolest TF:A figures so far. Easily a must for anyone into TF:A or a fan of Ultra Magnus. Actually, TF:A Magnus is a must for anyone into Transformers. Like I said of Lockdown, even if you don't like the TF:A style, this figure is just too cool to pass up and the cartoony look of the Animated characters isn't as profound with Ultra Magnus.
As many before me have stated, this is one Ultra Magnus who can deal with it, whatever "it" may be, any time, any where!
10/10
Synthetic Breed:
^^^ Agreed. I griped about the powder blue cab and whatnot but in person you can hardly notice. Got this figured from BBTS today and haven't stopped messing with him since. Fanfuckingtastic!
QuinJester:
No wrist swivels means no two-handed hammertimes, which makes me sad
Liege Prime:
I sat and stewed about how I like this guy. Every pic I saw, he looked excellent- potentially one of my favorite figures. When I started reading the reviews, people were saying that he kinda has the problem where his shoulders are too far back similar to Titanium Magnus. Well, now that I have him, the problem isn't that his shoulders are too far back, its that his shoulder swivel is NOT in his actual shoulder, it's behind it. So, when you swing his arm up, you are litterally moving his shoulder over his head. This is actually one of the only TFs I can think like this, and it was a terrible oversight in my opinion. He basically doesn't have a shoulder joint- if you try to move his should up to far and just doesn't look right at all.

Anyways, to me, that's a pretty bad disfunction, and made a toy that would have scored a 10 get a 7 instead. I still recommend him as a decent toy, just not that uber manifesation of Ultra Magnus a lot of us were wanting.
Locustreign:
Just got mine today. Really like him. My main gripe so far is the bloody transformation sound which seems to go off if you TOUCH him, never mind move anything on it!

I don't think the shoulder problem is THAT big of a deal breaker to be honest, unless you want him headstanding he should be fine
TCracker:
Just got mine....awesome and did some minor touch ups

Compared to G1 Magnus
Soundwave2:
Between this and City Commander, I'm so excited
Shark Jumper:
Why isn't he out in stores yet?!
>_<
*still waiting*
Razerwire:
Got mine today in the mail! The dude is a fricken BEAST!
Nerroth:
Is the Roadbuster repaint shown at Teletraan going to be a general release, or a limited offer?

(I had a go at the voice thing with one of the UMs on display in Silver Snail - and I cannot understand how anyone would think the 'not in your programming' line isn't the coolest thing ever put into a toy biomech's voice chip!)

pretty sure Roadbuster is a general release along with Shadow Megatron for the Wave 3 Leaders
darkmgmstr:
I got this masterpiece of an Animated fig in the mail today and he is made of pure win. I do have two complaints tho. I have a hard time flipping out his front cannons from the front of his shoulders. Also, his voice activator doesn't work. All other sounds work perfectly(tranformation, weapon activation in vehicle mode) but his voice activation doesn't work when i press his EG Autobot symbol. Regardless of these two setbacks, I am very glad I picked him up.

i want one

I see, thanks.
Feralstorm:
Got mine today. Go HTS!

Pros:
* Good size in both modes.
* Good looks in both modes
* flip-out weaponry is awesome, especially when it all applies well in either mode.
* Hammer is pretty kewl.
* Very innovative transformation design
* voice and sound effects are pretty good, though the voice doesn't seem quite as 'spot on' as Megatron and Bulkhead to me.

Cons:
* Knee-bits hanging out around the rear end of the vehicle mode.
* Arm jointing is kinda awkward, making certain poses look weird.
* TF-joints to raise vehicle parts on shoulders are STIFF AS F#C*! - and hard to move, which makes the tf-noise parts go off repeatedly.
* Hammer doesn't stay in the stowed position very stably on mine.
* Face doesn't quite look right to me compared to the cartoon. It's probably the ventriloquist-dummy-mouth. (fun to put your finger on top of the head and work the toy like a puppet though )

Summary: not nearly as simple and elegant as either Leader Bulkhead or Megatron, IMO, but still a very strong figure, with something extra to like if you're a fan of interesting transformations.
grayman:
Did anyone else break off one of his antennas with his fists while transforming him? I was being very careful and barely touched the antenna and it snapped clean off.
MegaMoonMan:
I got mine from HTS the other day. Nice, but mine had a major defect - the chest button doesn't work. His mouth moves, but there's no lights or sounds. The other triggers work, just not the chest button.

It bugs me, but not enough to return him to HTS. If it wasn't for the stinking pins on his hips, I could easily take him apart and fix him, I'm sure. I'd like to hear his phrases and whatnot.

Anybody else have this problem?
c717905:
Got mine from HTS today. Everything looks great except for one smudge fingerprint on the shin. It isn't really that noticeable, but still annoying. Otherwise this is one great figure and I am glad I went ahead and ordered him. Everything fits together as well as I had hoped based on pics and the robot mode is truly imposing as hell. I really really like this guy and he is a great addition to my collection.

Maybe the battery is just dead?
The Primes:
Mine arrived today. The only problem is that the nose has a small scratch, so it's a bit white. Of course, that's probably show-accurate, seeing as Starscream shot him in the face at point-blank range.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to fix it?
Incepticon:
Just got this guy last night and have to say that he's not only the best Animated figure, but possibly one of the best overall Transformers I've bought... ever. There is a deceiving amount of detail that goes into the transform process, both modes are PERFECT, the bot mode is wonderfully articulated, and all the hidden weapon gimmicks all make this guy feel more like a Masterpiece than a regular release figure. And I absolutely LOVE how heavy he is.

I think Voyager Prime and Leader Bulkhead are damn near perfect as well, but the extra bells & whistles on Magnus easily puts him to #1 on my Animated favorites list. In terms of Leader size, weight & complication, he completely blows Megatron out of the water.

No, like I said, the other buttons work - just not the chest button. He does the TF sound and his guns light up and all that, just no voice.

I think I'm going to have to pull those hip pins and do some surgery.
PrimeOQZ:
I just got mine in today from HTS. The electronics work but the mouth doesn't move. I have not removed him from box yet because I wanted to see if this happened to anyone else. Doesn't look like anything is infringing its movement but I could be wrong.
T16skyhopp:
i have a bulkhead whose mouth doesn't work. If it bothers you return it. the mouths seem to buried and near electronics to be easily fixed. I got mine today. His mouth moves but his electronics don't work -_-

I know, but it is hassle to return things. Good news for me though. After moving UM's head it must have loosened up and it works.
Gears:
Just got mine from HTS. He had some weird glue and paper stuck on his side, and he has some QC scratches, and some of his flippy panels are kind of loose, but otherwise he flat out rocks. Love all the hidden weaponry and the quote he says about Optimus Prime is just classic. Transformation is unique and fun. Also his cannon lights are bright as HELL and damn near flashlights. Recommended!

Let me know how the surgery goes since I am experiencing the same problem. It doesn't bother me that I have a mime Magnus, but if the problem is tiny, then I will consider trying to fix it myself.
