Classics Ultra Magnus City Commander Armor Announcement CityCommander_01
The Classics Ultra Magnus trailer armor will be released under the name City Commander, and will be fully transformable, completely colored and assembled. Made by the same people that produced the Cliffjumper upgrade kit, it will be offered to North American Fans via online retailers like the sponsors of TFW2005. Stay tuned for more details.

Oh really? Well if I remember correctly, when this thing was first announced it was stated that this would be much easier to get ahold of because many more were going to be produced than were made for the CJ kit, which I wanted, but was never able to get ahold of because of price issues.

If you'll reread my post you quoted, you'll see that I also said if they were CHEAP enough I'd buy 2. The original price quote for this was around $50 or so, still pricey, but with what you get compared to the CJ kit, I can see that the UM armor is the better deal. The price is basically what'll determine how available the thing is. The more it is, the less that were made, the less it is.....well, hopefully you get the idea.

when it was first announced, it was said that it would be on a wider release than the cliffjumper set, but things change! why not go and re-read the first post in this thread where it says that they are going to be of a limited release!

You mean this?

The CJ upgrade kit was a limited run with very low quantities produced, which were just enough to offer to some fan-clubs only. Unfortunely, City Commander will be limited quantities with a locked SRP, and mainly offered to North American Fans this time.

Seems to me that being limited to North America fans would mean more product is being made than for some fan clubs only. Limited Quantities means not being mass produced, not neccessarily meant as only a few are being made.

Sometimes it's not a matter of just saving. Some people don't have the finances to save. Isn't this thing coming out soon?

It hasn't been announced when it's coming out, but I hope preorders open up soon. As for saving, I can't afford to just buy what I want, so I set aside all of my change to get what I want. Thankfully with the gap between the last TFs I've bought and Classics 2.0 (the only TFs I'll be able to get unfortunately) I've got quite a bit saved already.

Then of course there's the rebate check the government will start issuing next month.

I'm thinking that trailer kit is gonna be the stuff of angst for quite some time.

That's pretty much how I'm getting my new Animated and Classics goodies too.

Thanks for the check GWB! Don't let the door hit you in the keaster on the way out!

yup. that is my encore omega supreme x2 ( gotta have a 2 guardian escort for my Mechabot-1 figure)
and the two preporders on HTS for animated that have been ordered.....

I didn't notice the "locked SRP" before. Doesn't that mean BBTS can't mark 'em up?

Is there anywhere where I can see more of their artwork? Or does anyone know who does it? It's always so awesome.

And while Classics was not aimed SOLELY at kids, they needed KIDS to buy a majority of the figures in order to make them viable of a retail release. Why make a trailer when you could spend the time and effort on designing another deluxe figure? Especially a Trailer for a repaint.

We are getting a trailer through this kit, what's the problem? It is a collectors item for the collector market. But I know what is coming, if people who feel they are entitled to own this figure feel the price is too high, they will come up with reasons why Hasbro "shudda" released it at retail. I hope this kit doesn't turn into Botcon seekers all over again.
I never saw the Primes on clearance. Sale, yes, but I've seen all the recent TFs on sale.
The trailer would have made Ultra Magnus a different character, and would have justified a higher price point. And there is really no way to say how it would have sold, since it wasn't attempted.
I don't feel anyone is entitled to this trailer. I also don't feel there's any way to say that Classics Magnus would not have sold if he had had a trailer/armor. It wasn't attempted, we'll never know what would have happened. For me, if the trailer is cheap enough, I'll buy it. If not, I won't, and I'll simply stick with Animated UM.

This argument to defend a position is flawed logic because Hasbro does know because they have the qualitative data to prove it. Trailers are poor sellers Hasbro has both Focus testing and actual sales to prove it. This is the same thing people said "we don't know Geewun movie would have been a failure because it wasn't made." We do know due to something called focus testing and other forms of qualitative research.

Bring it up at Botcon Q&A... The effort in designing and selling trailers does not pay off as well as designing more lower-priced individual characters.

So Cybertron Prime sold worse than Cybertron Megatron? Same size class, same price, one had a trailer, one didn't. The trailer combined with Prime to make him Megatron's equal in size. If the trailer was a useless accessory that just sits there, I can see. If it combines as part of the character, and is done well, I don't see it.
And sure designing more lower-priced figures pays off more. It's no great leap of logic to realize you're going to sell more $10 toys than you are $40 toys. But then they should probably just abandon the larger figures altogether. Now, Unicron, Primus, C-Starscream, those were the shelfwarmers, the figures I saw on clearance. The Primes, not so much.

Since when did Cybertron Prime have a trailer? He's a pseudo-fire truck, with a removable portion that forms wings...

My bad, mine has never gotten opened and I thought he combined with something for his Super-Mode, from watching the cartoon. I didn't think he looked like a fire truck.

You know the last two Primes to really have a trailer were Armada and Energon.... So maybe it wasn't the trailer but more like they both sucked ass and were $40

Personally I hate trailers... even ones that turn into stuff like Armada Prime and RID Scourge.
REDLINE:
RID Sourge's trailer is full of WIN
smkspy:
I find the argument over Prime's trailer pretty funny. Armada Prime's trailer was decent even though it was a brick for his superform, but at least could become a battle station like G1. Energon Prime's trailer was useless beyond transporting his power ranger limbs. Though those two Prime sole reason for not selling out everywhere wasn't solely the fault of their trailers, but also cause the figures were pretty terrible.

Frankly, i think trailers for Prime or Magnus aren't considered for production because they make a Prime or Magnus figure a poor seller, but because Hasbro just doesn't want to raise leader class prices or have to size down leader figures back to RID/Armada/Energon size just to include a trailer. After all, including a trailer with Classics Prime or UM would have raised the voyager price to at least $30 and more likely $40.

In retrospect, given that Classics Prime/UM is an awesome figure having a trailer would've been the perfect test for whether or not it is the trailer or the figure that makes or breaks the sale for these larger price points. Though plenty of Voyager Prime and UM two-packs also went on clearance themselves.

Well, hasbro is not keen on experiments... and even if it might have been the trailer to succeed all trailers, there are way too many large price point figures out there that were just not cost effective. Universe Seacons? Classics Devastator?

After looking over this kit, I am not sure that Hasbro could have done it better, or at all because I am sure there are 'kid friendly' rules that this designer doesn't know about or have to care about.

I still remember when I purchased Car Robots Black Convoy (RID Scourge) back in 2000. When that sucker arrived, I decided to try out the cool "air" missiles. I set it all up, then slammed down on the air pump.......only to watch the missile go literally 3 inches (it barely made it off the stand). After that, I boxed that sh*t and it still sits in the Black Convoy box (I've had the figure itself out a few times to put on display and store again).

Some trailers look cool, but aren't very functional.

There's a flattened side on the launcher that you have to line the missile up with. The missile will fit on anyway, but unless you get the flat side of the launcher matched up with flattened interior side of the missile, then the launcher won't work for crap. That's probably why it didn't work too well for you. If you get it lined up right, though, then that sucker will freakin' fly, man. It's awesome lol
hXcpunk23:
lol--thanks for the tip, man. I doubt I'll even mess with anytime soon though. I mean, it's been nearly 8 years. I've also grown tired of the whole "gimmick" thing.
REDLINE:
but his trailer isn't a gimmick, the whole sucker is a fortress. flyin' disks.. missle launchers and rocket launchers, woot. Not to mention a crap-ton of chrome.

yeah, i'm sure the backlash against trailers had aboslutely nothing to do with how incredibly bad the Energon and Armada versions were.

1 changed from a thing that looked nothing like a trailer to a thing that really looked less like a base than it did an unfolded cardboard box to something that vaguely resembled legs (from the front). but hey, it did it automatically at least. and that was fun, like, twice.

and the other pretty much looked less like a trailer (more like a garbage truck), and did nothing but haul fairly pointless ugly drones for making Mish-mash-imus Prime.

Going by the prices of that Cliffjumper kit, I think I'll pass. I'd rather drop $40-50 and get a Titanium Ultra Magnus instead of spending 3x the amount for some kit that doesn't even include the figure.
DJW107PRIME:
Well even if there not cost effective I like trailers. I'll be getting this because it rocks and fits the character so well, and if Prime gets one I'll buy that sh*t too.
