Botcon 2009 - Transformers Animated Animating Animated Panel

Botcon 2009 - Transformers Animated Animating Animated Panel transformers_animated
The second Botcon 2009 panel that we have coverage from is the Transformers Animated Animating Animated panel. I'll get the hard part out of the way first - yes, the series is done. Derrick Wyatt, Marty Isenberg and the rest of the staff have given the official confirmation that season 3 is the end.

With that out of the way, the panel covered the whole process of creating the series and a few of the answers out of the question and answer session answered some hanging questions from Season 3, such as the fate of the Constructicons, Wreck Gar and the Dinobots.

Click on the title of this story to read the notes taken in the panel.

With all due respect to those who hated Animated. I'm NOT happy it got cancelled. Don't derive pleasure from other people's misery. It makes you look small and petty and makes the fandom look bad.

So please go back to wishing for a better TF series made just for you . It will come back to bite you in the end.

yes i hope the toys (well some of them that have their molds done already) show up even in universe packaging. with luck i hope the adventures continue in comic format.
NeilD83:
im glad that they made the series but i wish there would have been at least two more seasons

You had me at Backarrachnia Slave Girl. Someone post this picture to feed the nerds!

Looking forward to The Allspark Almanac - and hope someday that Derrick Wyatt draws a definitive extended TFA universe book with all the characters he never got to design, with bios etc. That would be amazing.

Starscream dream... doesnt surprise me n_n

Well, I least we know what happened to weckgar and the others.
OrionPaximus:
There is always hope Hasbro does an evolutions of exclusive. The set could consist of Energon ARCEE, TFA Arcee and ROTF Arcee.
avc-prime:
Even though I was not a fan of the series I feel sad is over, way too soon. I thought everything was going well since the movie help bring TF to kids again. Well I hope they re invent transformers as a whole, with cgi movie still animation.
evebird:
Not a surprise, but nice to finally get confirmation.

Tomorrow we'll probably get the announcement that Hasbro is officially shutting down the toy line.

Process starts with the creation of the series bible, characters, relationships

Nanosec was the pilot episode that was created, the basic normal everyday episode.

In production – starts with stories, 2-3 line story springboards, 15-16 stories to choose from for 13 episodes. Starts with something like “we’ll use Swindle”. Overall season arc is decided, changes as they go like how season 1 was originally written as 13 then expanded to 16 when pilot moved into a movie.

Stories drafted over and over, drafted and redrafted.

Actors all read together.

Group session, group dynamic.

Cast for versatility, aim was for a wide range of characters, about 1000 voices from the main cast alone.

Scripts written, fleshed out into a show.

Fleshed out with designs, day night colors. Designers for each different aspect of the show. Lots of little designs, stuff like back views, top of Fanzone’s head.
Some of the backgrounds have a lot of depth, like Optimus’ room has a row of trailers including the G1 trailer.

Storyboards – lots of post its. Notes on the script made, sent over to studio for the storyboard to be produced, reviewed and sometimes sent back.
Long hours of phone conversations.

Lots of people on the show on every level fans of Transformers.

Edited and once timing was good, handed to Audio Circus who did the audio.

Lots of SFX, lot of fun with new SFX for each episode. Huge sound for big robots biggest fun.

Season 3’s opening was storyboarded in the US rather than overseas.

Final episode used 260 channels of audio.

Robot Sari was planned from the beginning

Chins – Derrick has no idea real answer, to look more cartoony.

Wanted to do Deathsaurus, more Dai Atlas.

Team Charr and Rodimus – Spittor all SFX, Brawn would have been Corey Burton if he’d spoken.

Transwarped planned as a two party not three.

Warned early the series might end so wrapped it up as much as they could. Left some bits open to continue the story – they have the answers to the hanging questions.

Originally, Constructicons and Wreck Gar were in Endgame Part 2, they were meant to survive. Dinobots were in the script, flying off into the ocean when the Lugnut Supremes crash landed.
Where can we find those videos? Those ones with Starscream dreaming sounds interesting.
porkimus:
well that it then. the end animated was the truth after all.

Go blame the children for not buying enough Animated toys to justify Hasbro keeping the series going. In fact, there could be a few children in your own family.
Akumaxv:
Like others said, it's not surprising, but it's expected. It really sucks, because this was a fantastic series.

To me, it's pretty obvious why they canned it. 1. That soulless mess of a movie universe they created. There was more characterization and story and depth in the first 3 episodes Animated than the whole 2 hour movie. They needed the comics to actually give the robots, and the humans any characterization. It turned out to be a cash cow for Hasbro, which leaves us looking for something made by people that actually care about the TF brand out of luck.

2. Considering how much money the first movie made, and the 2nd one will as well, it only makes smart economic sense that Hasbro concentrate on one line, and not have a competing one on the shelves, and not confuse buyers.

Does it suck? Yes, but Hasbro is a business and their priority is to make money.

That's how I see it.
capellamusic:
No... this is my favorite Transformers series after G1! It's really sad to see it end . I even prefer Animated to the Movie. Even the toys. Well, I hope a complete DVD boxset will be announced sometime soon.
CAI220:
I believe at a 10% chance that there could be a possible spin-off for TFA.
Quicky:
Who's to say they don't pull a 'Beast Machines' out of this, Beast Wars syndicated and then moved to Fox and renamed and continued. When is Hasbro starting up their own network again.

If animated is truly dead...there better be another north american produced show because I'm tired of the anime/dubbed shows. If this happpens than I think I'm done.
moreprimeland:
Well, sad but expected news. TF Animated will be missed.
We loved you guys!!!!!
At least we can keep watching them in reruns and on DVDs.
to the creative teams who brought this wonderful series to us for as long as they could.
Oric:
Aside from Beast Wars, Animated was the best Transformers series bar none. If the art style didn't grab you and you avoided it I sympathize for you even if you may not understand why.

Animated brought us a new format and style to play around with. The artists brought a fresh approach to characters that had them using different arsenals rather than everyone having a blaster. Size, personality and general look for the first time ever seemed to be individualized. The voices often were drawn from previous series; and often from G1. There didn't seem to be one episode without a cleverly placed homage somewhere.

The story was the first cohesive story I have ever seen in a Transformers series. Even Beast Wars had numerous plotholes generated in part to very individual writers and Hasbro's snap decisions.

The human story was actually as well crafted as the robot story. I found myself wanting to know more and more about the Sumdacs and the world they lived in.

If you are ho hum about Animated, I guess you have that right. But really you missed out on something spectacular. Nothing; G1, Unicron Trilogy and RiD- none of them came even close to the intrigue and craftsmanship of storytelling that was presented in Animated. I hope whoever missed out on Animated lets themselves enjoy it one day.

Seriously.
I love G1 but I sold all my g1 stuff about nine years ago. I still have the dinobots though. But that's fine even if he does. I don't blame him. Animated is 100x better in my opinion. Beast Wars and Animated are way more satisfying. But, to be on this website and say you're "happy" this toyline and cartoon got cancelled? Its Transformers. We love them. People can disagree and bitch about the designs all they want, but hell, I'm just thankful that the robots in disguise are still around 25 years later.

Good question, I thought about asking myself, but was not so sure I really wanted to know their reaction. If in the negative, it would have set off all of us again...best to let it go I guess.

I'm not glad it failed, but I am looking forward to a future TF series that isn't so highly stylized and simplified in terms of animation. Something a little more maturely written would be a nice change for the franchise, too.
SeishinKibou:
Well...that's just prime...*sighhhhh* I'm totally bummed out now This series has been my favourite ever since Beast Wars. Very upsetting to see it confirmed to be canned. I really want to know more details on why it was canned and also more info on what happened with all the characters. I really just wanted Sari and Blackarachnia to have some sort of conclusion. It frustrates me to know nothing of their final stories. >_< garhhh! I'll be happy with anything from TFA to conclude things. Though personally I would prefer animation. Maybe in a year or so they'll rethink it...maybe...one can hope...

Also, whatever this new cartoon is it has a lot to live up to after TFA and be something that's going to be fresh and new.
Scorpion:
One HUGE complaint I have against Animated's detractors is simply:

Simplified animation =\= simplified story

...and that's been most people's reaction to the series. If you didn't like the animation...that's fine. I definitely see how that style isn't going to please everyone...but MOST of the stories were on par with anything else we've ever gotten in terms of "mature" writing Some of the "Autobots vs. super villain of the week" stories WERE kinda bad...but anyone who thinks that any of the A/E/C crap was better needs their head examined. In my opinion Animated is tied with G1 for favorite series...with Beast Wars being a close second.
transmetal2dinobot:
hopefully the next series won't make me tune out like AEC did.

EDIT: HOLD THE PHONE! we never found out femmescream's name! i call shenanigans!
Aurora Bluewolf:
is it strange that i have this impending feeling of ultimate 'wtf' and 'this is really, really bad' every time someone mentions the next series? i just get this feelng if fans responded htis badly to TFA, what are they going to do on the next round?

For god sakes, pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease don't do anything with 'Sam', i get annoyed by him enough in the movie. I don't need him ruining my shows too. (goes back to reading comics and books-no reason left to watch television)
Laser_Optimus:
Well, shame it won't be moving forward. That sucks.

Also, I don't know why I get this feeling of impending doom whenever someone speaks of the 'next series'. The way Hasbro has been going... I expect it'll be something along the lines of the movie universe... and I just don't dig that.
AutobotJazz4:
And isn't there a way that we the fans can protest, or at least write some sort of petition to Hasbro to reconsidder their canceling of TF Animated?
mitchsantona:
I hope this continues in some other form, and my heart is broken if they do not make some of the toys still. What a mistake they are making by ending this. It will be missed.

I'll say... I'm still missing Decepticon Swindle, Dinobot Swoop, Junkion Wreckgar, and Arcee... Damn, I'm actually angry at that canceling report on the Arcee toy. The prototype was already made and images where shown here. Can you guys imagine how much money has been thrown away by this entire ordeal? Canceling all the stories that where probably already written and the toys that where possibly going into process. I was hoping that they would make a Transformers Animated the Movie. That would be really cool.

If any of the people of Hasbro read this... on behave of all fans here, please continue Animated... PLEASE. You are making a terrible mistake. Animated is cool and we love it.

The usual crap.

I agree about the writing. A couple of dumb episodes but for the most part it was way better than the Unicron Trilogy and G1. It is on par with the BW/BM. Although being a Transformers fan, I wasn't happy when those other series got cancelled either, (bad writing and everything) and I wasn't saying to bury it. I know there were fans of those other series that were a little more sad than I was so I'm not going to glorify it's demise. There are a couple of tools in these forums that need to quit with the hate. If you're in your glory, then start a Transformers hate website. Don't revel here.

Probably less than will be made by focusing on the movie line. Sorry.

dudes, i just went to target... in the movie figures (i got Voyeger Starscream) They have Dirt Boss (forklift), Depth Charge (battleship...thingy, it's not an aircraft carrier) and some others that i can't quite remember the names of- but they are pushing animated and and other series into TF ROTF.

Yeah, I can't believe no-one asked Wyatt or Eric about that! I mean, it's most likely the last time we see the team on Botcon. It's not like they cannot reveal it anymore, I bet Wyatt wanted to keep the name for a special episode but now that the show is over, I want to know!

Now what will we call her? I got tired of hearing even Prime saying "that female clone of Starscream".
Bass X0:
All the clones of Starscream in the show are named Starscream.

The toys get individual names. No toy, no name.
Q-dog:
Sadness overwhelms me.... i will really miss these transformers. and this universe. i live in serious hope for a comic book continuation. or, hell, even a videogame that might finish up the storyline completely.

wouldn't that be fun! a really cool x-360 /PS3 game that is in the animated style. we can but live and dream.

From the first Hasbro panel:
Quote:
1:43 no plans to make Female Starscream, her name is confirmed as Slipstream by the way
Since her VA was Tara Strong the name limitation already didn't apply to her, as she was listed separately as 'Female Starscream' in the credits. She was just never actually given her real name in the show.

As far as the new series, maybe that's where Marty Isenberg landed after CN told him to clean out his office. I have a feeling that people's feelings for Animated will make it that much harder to get into a new show, tho.

Smasher:
I'm really sad to see Animated go.

Aside from the episode with Dirt Boss, Season 3 is a blast.
I hope the toys that we are seeing on the other thread get released.
Macross7:
So would people be fine if they continued Animated's continuity but adjusted the animation style to less 'cartoony'? Not sure how to word it..more realistic? Similar to Beast Wars' CGI was different than Beast Machnines' CGI but they were the same continuity.

Personally, I'd love it. I'm fine with the current look but wouldn't mind a more realistic look if the story was a continuation. Animated was the first modern series that I couldn't wait for the next episode. Didn't watch BW/BM while it was on due to not intested in animal TF at the time. Watched RID due to them back being cars/trucks. Watched AEC but while Armada was watched, both Energon/Cybertron had me watching the first few eps before giving up on it.
BB Shockwave:
I'm surprised that at the Hasbro panel (where we were told the official cancellation news will be told) it was not explicitly explained just WHY are they cancelling the show. CN-deal? The new channel? Not enough sales?

At least I have not seen any such info frontpaged.
Galaxy Convoy:
I'm just wondering, did anybody think to ask if all 3 Constructions were originally intended to eventually combine into Devastator before they were told of the show ending with S3?

I'm genuinely annoyed nobody in the audience had the cajones to stand up and actually ask them for a proper answer.

Yeah, me too. But I doubt that we would have got much of an answer about it at this point. Probably would have been something like: "Oh yeah, we really enjoyed Animated, but it's over now and we're really enjoying working on RotF too. Go buy movie toys!"

In all seriousness though, it just seems as though every time this question has been asked to Hasbro in one of the Q&A sessions... that they have dodged it each time and brought up the upcoming movie line. Of course, it's very possible considering that was a joint venture with CN that they can't actually discuss the reasons for cancellation with us. Whatever the reason, I'm sure it's a lot deeper in reality than them just wanting to make way for the movie... I wouldn't be surprised if retailers were involved in the cancellation as well (places like Wal-Mart have this power to be able to dictate what they carry and such).

From the sounds of it it seems like that Hasbro had their panels designed to severely curtail question time this year, so it was less likely that someone would have had a chance to ask this question. Am I right/wrong in this observation?
