Animated Menasor Official Head Design

Posted on 08-05-2011 at 12:04 PM by Sol Fury under Animated
Animated-Menasor-Head
There's been some buzz this past week about what Animated Menasor's head should look like, thanks to the G1Upper's Animated Menasor head sketches. Now we have a sketch from the man himself, Derrick J. Wyatt, of what he thinks Animated Menasor's head looks like. Given Derrick J. Wyatt worked with Fun Publications to design the Animated Stunticons, and was the character designer for Transformers Animated, this is as close to a canonical head design for Animated Menasor as we are ever likely to see.

Click on the link above to check it out - it's very different from the G1Upper designs, and blends in the classic Menasor helmet look with the modern Animated Motormaster facial hair.

What is this for?

That actually looks pretty neat. Don't think it looks Animated-styled enough though.

Fingers crossed Kapow will get them...

i know its still early, but not feeling much of an animated vibe yet. looks like a quick sketch too as both sides of the head are not the same, the right goes slim and down and the left is large and sticking straight out.

i cant see many ppl excited over that drawing alone.
Valkysas
That looks pretty terrible.

Yes please. Friggen yes.

We know we know... it is not as much as we would liked to have given. Trust us, if we could we would have it for sell right now. This project is a huge undertaking, especially for designers that can only work on this part time.

So far here is some info:
The set will be limited to at max 1,500 sets.
BBTS and Toyarena.com will be our US distributers.
We are looking to have a full prototype complete by October.
Don't like the look and a probably expensive upgrade to an expensive figure set, feeling underwhelmed. I want a proper menasor combiner and for the price this set is gonna end up costing I think a custom one would be cheaper and better. Come on G1uppers show us something actually G1

Here is the REST of the post:

This is an EXTREMELY early W.I.P. for the head of "MENACE". It is a quick digital mock-up as we are sculpting and building before we fine tune him in cad..There will be changes.
phoenix88
That looks interesting. not quite the animated Aesthestic, but then again, neither is this combination idea. I'm still decidely "meh" interested on the whole thing, but i'm more intrigued now than before. I'll wait to see the full proto in October.

And if he ends up being stupidly expensive, well i just wont by him. the Botcon set wasn't meant to combine anyway.
cobra zartan
This is what they were holding off showing us? Hopefully they atually show us something next time that doesn't look like a 30 second drawing.

Hey, I'm just basing my thoughts on what I see so far. Don't get me wrong, though, I still like it.
frenzyrumble
i am more curious of to how they showed this at TFcon, was a piece of notebook paper handed to the 3rd party panel?

If it hadn't been for the thread title, I would never guess that's Menasor head, LOL.

Okay. Cool.
Hollywood Hoist
Given that is a quick mockup, my guess is that more of the Animated aesthetic will come out when they get to the prototype stage.

I have faith in this project.
Shadowbreaker
Definitely interesting. Very curious to see how it turns out.

because G1UPPERS wanted to do what they could to help support the guys at TFCON with the first 3rd party panel. Better to give a quick sketch of the direction they are going than be no shows.
Icespark
I'm not certain if they'll be reading this thread for feedback, but, if they do, I'll write down my thoughts.

I really like the upper portion of the head, helmet, and crest!

I do think the lower portion of the face needs some clarification though. I'm not certain if that's supposed to be a mouth-guard, like Optimus has, or an oxygen mask styled armor, like some of the boat and airplane Transformers have.

I can't wait to see more!

Agreed.

I hope it's a VERY rough sketch. Like back-of-a-napkin rough.

I see a lot of customizers bashing this.....wonder what that all about?

it has potential. at least we know they are going to do it. i hope bbts and toyarena sell it at a reasonable price dammit.

Technically it could be used for the five Animated figures that set's based on too. You'd probably want to repaint the regular TFA bots too... but well, it'd be cheaper than what that set is netting on eBay...
caitlindevi
I hope thats a very early sketch cause at the moment thats awful.

That one that was on the fan art page was amazing, still not 100% animated style, but closer than this
Th0r4z1n3
The rumor of this type of add-on is one of the reasons I really wanted this year's BotCon set. Hope it turns out to be at least descent quality and at a descent price. *fingers crossed*
Thundershot
Well, I'm definitely in. Can't wait to see the rest....
Kaijumaster
Well, If nothing else this custom got me to buy the Botcon set, which I have not regretted.

To all the Arm chair critics who have never done anything like this but feel the need to complain about a rough sketch. go away.

To G1 uppers. Thank you for your contribution to the Hobby!
Trailbreaker77
Don't like it, I'll be taking pictures of my sets tonight to sell on the boards tomorrow. I know it's only a head so far but I'm not really of fan of Animated anyways.
Bgrngod
This is not the update you are looking for.

While I certainly hope their progress on this project is moving along, I wish their "marketing" would be better. Reveal more please!

I think it's just announcing something, without showing anything. Also if they expect to have a full prototype by October, they would have something more to show, especially when everyone is working part time. Granted all they are doing is connecting parts, but still.

As someone who explored taking on something like this, I know that it is a significant investment in money with a huge amount of risk. Not to mention time. It's a business and to announce anything in this manner does not give me confidence.

The piece count? The day they hope to have a prototype? This is all back of the house details that should be bullet points, not headlines.

for real? i didn't see any, sorry if I missed a name.

I don't hate it, but its just not Animated enough to work yet. It's obviously very rough, so the final head will likely be much better. I do dig that it kinda looks like a gas mask, though.

Well... it is what we got How do we know that showing this, so in a week when the 3D renderings or other things surface, it keeps talk going.

So, you don't think a hand built prototype can't be built in three months? Because the blog says they are hand building it before it is going to be fin tuned in some kind of CAD program.

I was thinking the same thing about the gas mask.. kind of like a BANE vibe... we shall see..
Digilaut
Even though it's WIP, if this is the sketch they are confident in showing, I have the feeling they won't nail the head design/aesthetic all that well. Don't want to come off as mean, but that's a pretty generic head sketch, looks more like the first or second try somebody put on paper.

For anybody interested, I hope I will be wrong and this will be badass!
Nachtsider
Needs more Animated aesthetic.
Weirdwolf
I like it, can't wait to see more!

UPdated with more sketches!

And they are wanting feed back!!

"Here are some more head sketches based from the original and others with a new direction. As we have said before, nailing the look is very important to all of us. Again, just sketches, but closer to our final look. Feel free to let us know what you guys think at G1UPPERS@GMAIL.COM"

oooh!

the one with the smokestack antennae gets my vote!

i love that!!

looks to be the most "creative" i think, which fits the Animated design MO i think. A lot of characters in Animated are based on archetypes and caricatures and "stereotypes." Something designed along those lines would fit the best in my opinion! The others just seem kinda "im trying real hard to be geewun homage" to me

but yeah!

smokestack guy! he gets my vote
Transbot90210
To me the bottom middle face is the most Animated Menasor to me.
Sinnertwin
Those sketches are muuuuch closer to Animated. My personal favorite is bottom right, with the smokestack antenna.

Agreed. Love the smokestack but I still need to see how he looks combined before I can commit for a buy.
Thundershot
They look like a cross between G1 Menasor, Cybertron Megatron, and G1 Skyquake/Machine Wars Starscream/Universe King Atlas.

I wish DJW would do a sketch...
Anguirus
Smokestack antennae FTW!

The upper left one is baaaaaaasically just Lord Straxus.

I think I know what their next project should be.
Bgrngod
3, 5, and 6 have a pretty close Animated look to them. The facemask sketches are kinda meh. All in all if I had to choose, I'd ask them to provide 4 more sketches.
process
Considering how the individual members of team Stunticons were inspired by other characters, I would try to develop the combined head in the same fashion. Who, real or fictional, best personifies the aggregate personalities of team Stunticon?

For example, and to demonstrate my complete lack of knowledge on the subject of stunts, take Evil Kenevil: evil kenevil - Google Search

Thus, you could borrow his helmet and sideburns, perhaps extrapolate to some sinister looking visor, throw in his cape thing and finish it off with G1 Menasor's chevron/crest thing.

-edit-

Or, go the Nexus Prime route: combine elements of each individual member's heads to the gesalt's head.
