Transformers: Age of Extinction Toyline Underperforming?

Posted on 07-16-2014 at 03:40 PM by Mechafire under Transformers Movie Toys & Products (All Transformers Movie News)
4039720150569047F52BE572DD872B3E_1397322518 As had been reported a short while back, it seemed that the Transformers: Age of Extinction toyline was off to a somewhat rocky start. And now, we have even more evidence to back that up. Disney Pixar Cars website TakeFiveADay has posted an interesting article examining the current state of movie toylines and toylines in general, of course focusing a lot on the current AOE line. Unfortunately, despite the movie itself performing well, it seems the toyline isn't, and it doesn't sound like the outlook is positive either. From the article:

"The #1 licensed toy line in America usually generates about $400-$500 million in sales a year. [...] At the rate the toys are selling, Transformers might still crack $225 million which is a lot but when you create inventory to sell $500 million dollars worth of toys? That’s not so good"

It should be noted that this isn't just related to Transformers; toyline sales in general have been on the decline for a while now. This could potentially be bad news for not just Transformers fans, but fans of toys in general. The reasons for the decline in sales are numerous, and you can read them and discuss after the jump.

Age of Extinction Kre-O Microchangers Wave 2 Blindpacks feature no serial number

Posted on 07-16-2014 at 02:22 PM by Sol Fury under Kre-O
10494768_863602783668014_7957705562709004320_n It's bad news for Kre-O fans - the second Age of Extinction Kre-O Microchnagers assortment (which is series six or seven overall depending on how you count the preview wave) are reported to not feature serial numbers stamped on the packages to help identify the contents. For those picking these up in stores this is a bit of a blow - the serial numbers were a great shortcut to identifying the figures in the bags to collect a whole set. This news comes to you via the Hobbybase Facebook page.

How Hasbro Decides Which Toys They Will Turn Into Movies

Posted on 07-16-2014 at 09:33 AM by SilverOptimus under Transformers Movie (Just Movie) (All Transformers Movie News)
hasbro-toys Business Insider has posted an interesting article explaining how Hasbro decides which toys it will turn into movies and the profit they get in return.

With several more brands set to get the movie treatment in the next few years, we spoke with Hasbro Chief Marketing Officer John Frascotti to find out exactly how the company selects which of its toy lines get adapted to the big screen and how you can possibly turn a board game into a movie.

"We look for those brands that have story and character at their foundation because inevitably for any type of storytelling format, whether it's a movie, a television show, a digital comic ... it has to have great story and great characters at it's foundation," says Frascotti.

All together, the "Transformers" franchise has brought in more than $2.5 billion worldwide. The two "G.I. Joe" movies combined have generated more than $600 million at the box office.

According to Reuters, it's low risk strategy for Hasbro. The toy company pays around $1 million to develop script ideas and if a studio wants to go through with a film, Hasbro gets paid back the developing fee. After the film is in theaters, Hasbro reportedly receives 5% of the money a studio makes from theaters.

The article also states that following the success of the Transformers and other Hasbro brand movies, movies based on Jem And The Holograms, Magic the Gathering and Ouija are on their way to the Big Screen. You can read more at the Business Insider.

Rumor - new Age of Extinction Platinum Series Exclusives

Posted on 07-15-2014 at 02:48 PM by Sol Fury under Transformers Movie Toys & Products (All Transformers Movie News)
black_knight Take this as a rumor for now. TFW2005 member Catz, who has never steered us wrong yet, has shared with us some listings for upcoming Platinum Edition releases in the Age of Extinction toyline. While some of the listings (like Autobots United) we've heard of before there are two new ones:
  • A First Edition Leader Optimus Prime with trailer, who comes with Stinger. Previously revealed in the Toys R Us computers, but this is the first we have heard of the mold choices... and Stinger.
  • A five pack of Dinobots in black and gray decos

Perhaps we shall learn more about these at the San Diego Comic Con?

(Pictured, Takara-Tomy's Black Knight Grimlock. Could the Dinobots five pack have a similar deco?)

Update: Retailer etoysjapan.com has posted 2 images with silhouettes of figures for these listings.

The Prime with Trailer & Stinger set seems to have a bot that looks like Movie Sideswipe (blade arms), so it's possible the Stinger is a reapaint of that rather than a new mold.

There is also an image of the Dinobots set, showing an unmistakable Slog (Sludge).

Both are listed for an October release.
