Spotlight - Megatron Review
Megatron is a constant in IDW’s Transformers universe. We’ve seen his origin, we’ve seen him switch between many molds, and we’ve seen him supposedly die only to return again. Now, Spotlight: Megatron has been released to provide further insight into the Decepticon tyrant.
Spotlight: Megatron takes places entirely on the asteroid that many of the Decepticons found refuge after the events of All Hail Megatron and after the revival of Megatron in his new stealth bomber alt-mode body.
Nick Roche takes on both writing and art duties for this issue. This stand-alone story is narrated by Megatron, who tries to reconcile the dire situation that occurred in the last three years with his millions of years of Decepticon dominance under his leadership. As he attempts to come to grips with recent events, he turns his focus to one Decepticon whom he deems responsible for putting the Decepticons in their current situation. The story itself is fine and well written in terms of dialogue. For those expecting and story of shock and awe that would add more mystery to the mythos, you’ll be disappointed by the Spotlight. While filling in a rather large blank of previous IDW history, no new mysteries are introduced.
Between this spotlight and the recent spotlights on Orion Pax and Thundercracker, IDW seems to be a little reserved when it comes to the Spotlight series. Each of these three covers past events, without apparent impacts on their current situations. Some of the Spotlights, like Spotlight: Megatron are well written but fail to garner the excitement from the two ongoing series in More Than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise.
