Transformers Robots in Disguise #4 Synopsis
Transformers Robots in Disguise #4 Review
Review Submitted By: Tim Formas
At any other time, the following comments may have been different. However, fans are currently living in a moment where we have an extreme highly reviewed comic series in More Than Meets the Eye in addition to the Robots in Disguise series of which this review is a part of. If it wasn’t for More Than Meets the Eye, this review would suggest that this issue continues one of the stronger efforts by IDW in the last few years. Don’t get me wrong. The issue and the series thus far is very good, it’s just not More Than Meets the Eye.
In Robots in Disguise #3, the majority of the story focused on the reaction to Starscream joining forces with the leadership structure of the Autobots and non-allied Cybertronians. This storytelling was primarily illustrated through the effort of Wheeljack to investigate and solve the cause of a string of mysterious catastrophes striking Cybertron. Robots in Disguise #4 could easily be called Spotlight: Prowl Issue #2 (or #3 or #4). Many of the Decepticons have been provided jobs and Prowl is called into action when a murdered Decepticon in found in one of these areas. Prowl seizes this opportunity in an attempt to draw out any hints of a Decepticon ploy (if any).
Transformers Editor John Barber again handles writing duties and does a fine job with telling the story that has been crafted. Kudos to him for being brave enough to demonstrate that individuals within factions don’t all fall in line with the same ideologies and plans, sometimes acting much more like a member of the other faction. It’s a brave territory to approach and one which should have an interesting outcome. Will these individuals benefit from such actions or will they receiving their comeuppance? John was also brave enough to seemingly (****) (***) a few mid-card players in order to elevate the stakes. The treatment of one of these characters is interesting, given the importance given to this character in a previous incarnation from another publisher. The conclusion also invokes a surprising new feeling towards a certain character, a feeling that one would expect to feel so strongly about to this character.
The team of Andrew Griffith (art) and Josh Perez (colors) continues in Robots in Disguise #4, with their job demonstrating consistency thus far with the other three issues. Damage is illustrated very well in the issue, especially that inflicted on several Decepticons.
Without consideration of the More Than Meets the Eye series, Issue #4 of Robots in Disguise is a great issue. As said before in these new issue reviews, we’re fortunate enough to have two series that are truly enjoyable. Robots in Disguise #4 continues that trend.
WARNING! Following the last page of Transformers Robots in Disguise #4 is a one-page advertisement for Robots in Disguise #5 that features a small blurb teasing the storyline of the issue. Whereas the previous solicitation just mentioned a “new arrival on Cybertron”, this advertisement flat out identifies that character. The identity of that character is absolutely shocking, awesome, and hilarious all at the same time!
