Transformers Robots in Disguise #2 Synopsis
Transformers Robots in Disguise #2 Review
Review Submitted By: Tim Formas
It’s an interesting year for Transformers comics. The refreshing of the Transformers comics have brought about two ongoing series. By itself, the Robots in Disguise series would be the heavily discussed and anticipated series but seems to take a backseat to the concurrent ongoing series, More Than Meets the Eye. While it’s hard to compete with a series that covers a mythical journey full of the unknown, the Robots in Disguise series features enough drama and twists on Cybertron to make it a worthwhile series in its own right. Robots in Disguise #2 continues the series while changing the game.
In Robots in Disguise #1, Bumblebee struggles to maintain a rule that is viewed as equal between Autobots, Decepticons, and NAILS (non-allied). He potentially causes an escalation of hostilities when he detonates the explosive in Horri-Bull’s ID chip after several warnings, causing his death. Bumblebee and group attempt to deal with the aftermath of that event in Robots in Disguise #2, while dealing with the potential of Decepticon retaliation. Meanwhile, Starscream struggles to find his place in the current Decepticon regime.
Transformers Editor John Barber continues to handle writing duties for this series. For a second issue, John moves the stories along quite briskly. Rather than keeping the story middling to prolong the storyline for additional issues, the story continues to move forward. How much freedom the Decepticons have is explored, along with Bumblebee’s health, and the status of Starscream. John brings back a surprise familiar face, but this character’s appearance fits perfectly when you consider the actions taken are very unlike those expected from a typical Autobot. The resolution by this character also comes as quite a shock, two issues into the ongoing series. The cliffhanger that John also presents has the potential to create some terrific storylines in upcoming issues and creates a core group with many different personalities and agendas. One of the many reasons that fans love the More Than Meets the Eye series is because of the conflicting personalities, and that same dilemma is now apparent among the “core” group in Robots in Disguise.
Andrew Griffith continues art duties in this issue. Andrew’s art is fine. There’s nothing really wrong with it, but it’s not as stylized as what you see in other current releases such as the Ramondelli’s style in Autocracy or Roche/Milne style in More Than Meets the Eye. It’s just more typical of mainline Transformers art, so the reaction to it as not as great. Andrew does well in capturing facial emotions of characters, assisted with top notch coloring by Josh Perez.
The turns that Robots in Disguise takes have the potential to create multiple interesting storylines, on part with those seen in More Than Meets the Eye. The cliffhanger represents a potential game changer, one that will have ramifications for Autobots, Decepticons, and the non-allied. While we know that change won’t stick in the long run, it going to be a fun ride watch it in its infancy and then watching it all fall apart.
