Transformers More Than Meets the Eye #3 Synopsis
Transformers More Than Meets the Eye #3 Review
Review Submitted By: Tim Formas
More Than Meets the Eye #3 is a transition. Whereas the first two issues seemed like a two-part movie saga about the start of a magical journey, the third issue is more like an episode and “stand-alone” in nature. But, wow, what an episode…
Last issue, Skids arrived on the same strange planet that the Lost Light was currently stopped on, suffering a bout of amnesia. While Rodimus and others worked to recover the forty Transformers that were sucked out of the ship during the initial quantum jump, Red Alert notifies Rodimus that an apparent Sparkeater is onboard and has killed one of the crew members. In More Than Meets the Eye Issue #3, Rodimus leads an effort to investigate what happened and ensure that such carnage comes to an end. Meanwhile, Tailgate and Cyclonus discuss the Great War that occurred while they were both otherwise occupied.
James Roberts takes his first shot during this ongoing on writing an issue that is more stand-alone in nature and does one heck of a job in doing so. Everything from the first two issues is present here: action, humor, revelations are all mixed together is a beautifully blended story. James continues to tap upon the established personalities of the characters, such as Chromedome’s special ability. Skids is earning mass amounts of respectability as a character. Additionally, James is not afraid to either open new questions based on events from the first two issues or close out old questions. This issue appears to reveal what Prowl’s actions were on the ship before it exploded. While it was an indirect incident from his actions that lead to the ship’s original quantum jump, it will be interesting to see if there are any future ramifications from his actions. Swerve continues to be one of the more hysterically written characters, while Rung himself is finding his place as the object of ridicule (and humor!). The conversation between Cyclonus and Tailgate is intriguing, as both were intended to be members of the journey that lead Nova Prime to the Dead Universe. Cyclonus’ participation in this journey and Tailgate’s semi-coma during these millions of year both kept them away from the Great War between Autobots and Decepticons. As they discuss the merits of the factions, Tailgate makes a decision that is both comical and a fun little twist.
James has a knack of taking the unexpected route. During the investigation of the supposed Sparkeater, one didn’t expect the investigation to take that route and did not expect the revealed murdered to be handled in such a fashion. Regardless, the resolution helps move the story forward to another unknown mystery. In typical Roberts fashion, the resolution also has a bit of a comical twist to it.
Alex Milne continues art duties, with Josh Burcham again on colors. Alex continues to draw characters and scenery that are perfect for the tone of the story.
IDW continues to hit a home run with the More Than Meets the Eye series. Much like the Last Stand of the Wreckers series, IDW has put together a team that just gels and out comes a great product like this. What’s to come? Unknown. And honestly, that’s what is so great about this series. You just don't see it coming.
