Heart of Darkness #3 Synopsis
Heart of Darkness #3 Review
Review Submitted By: Tim Formas
Transformers: Heart of Darkness #3 seemed like most penultimate issues of a mini-series or story arc, in that its events set the stage for the finale. While Heart of Darkness #3 follows a predictable path for the majority of the issue, the ending of the issue was truly a complete shock.
In Heart of Darkness #2, Galvatron entered the portal sphere on Gorlam Prime to determine where the inhabitants of Gorlam Prime have gone. He also feels that heading into the sphere will help him to understand his calling and why the Heart of Darkness needs him. Upon entering the sphere, he is shocked to see the dead of Gorlam Prime being consumed by an entity called the D-Void. After narrowly escaping being consumed by the D-Void and returning to Gorlam Prime, Galvatron informs his small band of troops that the D-Void feeds off of the robotic spark of life and is headed towards the richest source: Cybertron! To prevent the D-Void from entering the universe, Galvatron is determined to bring together Autobots and Decepticons to fight the threat. The story in Heart of Darkness #3 starts at a planet called Spindrift. Spindrift was a battle point between Autobots and Decepticons during the Great War, as spume crystals from the vapor oceans of the planet could be refined as a crude source of Energon. On Spindrift, Galvatron is determined to use his Heart of Darkness to build an army.
Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning continue their run on the mini-series. For the first 18 pages, the issue felt like it did not necessarily offer as much in the way to details or revelations than the first two issues. The issue starts off with several pages of an alien race on Spindrift, before Transformers are even shown, following by pages of Galvatron raising his army to fight the D-Void. Those last four pages, however, pack quite the punch and ties in the rest of Issue #3 along with the previous issues. While the cliffhanger does not change the threat, the face of the threat was completely unexpected and is likely to create much discussion among fans of IDW’s “-ation” portion of the canon.
Ulises Farinas again is on art duties, with Andrew Crossley again on colors. Ulises’ art continues to be more consistent with each issue, but the proportions of the robots continue to be a little odd. Many of the main characters in the story (Galvatron included) tend to be rather boxy and bulky, whereas the background characters seemed to have more unique proportions. That said, Ulises does have a great knack for detailing. This reviewer was also a fan of his renditions of the non-robotic creature featured in the issue. Giving credit where it is due, Ulises did a fantastic job on the full-page final frame of the issue supplemented by Andrew Crossley wonderful colors. The effort is obviously visible on that page.
Heart of Darkness #3 follows the pattern of the first two issues. While starting off slow, the story continues to pick up pace by the end of each issue and provide the reader with stopping points that create excitement until the next issue comes around. Following the revelation at the end of Issue #3, Heart of Darkness #4 has the makings of a spectacular battle.
