Autocracy #3 Synopsis
Autocracy #3 Review
Review Submitted By: Tim Formas
Transformers fans get it all this week. Three Transformers comics are released this week, with one taking place in the ancient past of Cybertron (Autocracy #3), one taking place in the distant past of Earth (Infestation 2 Transformers #2), and one taking place in “current” time (More Than Meets the Eye #2). The digital-comic Autocracy #3 continues the story of Orion Pax on his journey to becoming Optimus Prime during the infancy of the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. It’s a nice companion piece to the More Than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise series which features Autobots, Decepticons, and non-allied Transformers following the end of one of their more wars.
As Autocracy #2 ended, Soundwave was on the run after being found spying by Starscream during a restricted security session being held by Zeta Prime at The Citadel in Iacon. Autocracy #3 is entirely devoted to the hunt for Soundwave by Orion Pax and his crew, from the Citadel to the outskirts of Kaon.
With this issue hot on the action and little in the way of long speeches or statements, co-writers Chris Metzen and Flint Dille still manage to keep the reader intrigued by the events taking place. The growing distrust of the government continues to be a theme in this issue. Any die-hard Soundwave fans should also be pleased, as this issue features Soundwave and four cassettes in all their glory. The revelation leading up to the cliffhanger is a nice surprise as well, indicating that Soundwave’s presence at the security session was not for the reasons one expected.
Livio Ramondelli brings his usual art style to the issue. His style appears to work well with characters featuring right angles to their body design, so many of the shots featuring Soundwave and his cassettes are among the best in the issue. His color contrasts seem much improved in this issue as well. Thanks to Livio, the Rumble/Frenzy color debate (FIBRIR/FIRRIB) also lives on!
If you’re ready for a comic (albeit an abbreviated one) with nothing but action, this is the issue for you. If not, it’s still a great set up to the story progression that is teased for Autocracy #4.
