Autocracy #12 Review

Review Submitted By: Tim Formas

Autocracy #12 brings an end to a crazy six months in which we as readers have received a new issue to read every two weeks. The writers throw a curveball in the last issue and offer hope for unlimited sequels and storylines for other series.

In Autocracy #11, Optimus Prime rallied the Autobots and non-allied to the cause, preparing to march on the Decepticons for a final showdown. In Autocracy #12, the final battle takes places and the Great War truly starts.

Co-writers Chris Metzen and Flint Dille finish the 12-piece mini-series in spectacular fashion, featuring a final issue that is full of action, twists, and cliffhangers. The writers have composed a 12-piece story that has kept the reader enthralled and coming back for more. One would not expect such storylines to be in place when the writers are only given 12 pages an issue, but each story seems to pack as much story in those twelve pages as your typical comic book. Metzen and Dille used every page given to them, not wasting a single one. In a surprising turn by the writers, a showdown between Optimus Prime and Megatron seems to be headed towards a very familiar outcome….until the writers completely turn it around. They also further cement the mini-series’ tie to other IDW Transformers titles through the discovery made by the Autobots near the end of the issue.

The writing in the series was enhanced by Livio Ramondelli’s art. Livio seems to have found his niche in this series and his confidence showed as the series continued. Livio’s art shines in battle scenes. See his panel of Metroplex flying into action as an example.

With Autocracy, we as readers were treated to new comics every two weeks, but more importantly we were given a storyline that was both familiar but written with such finesse that it kept us drawn in. With multiple opportunities opened by the pseudo-cliffhanger towards the end of the issue, IDW presents us hope that we’ll be treated to future online mini-series by this team…or at the very least storylines in the current ongoing series that result from the Autocracy outfall.
