To view the primary entry for this character, please Click Here. Bio: As the leader of an elite group of Autobot warriors known as the Aerialbots, Silverbolt shoulders a great deal of responsibility. He is a careful planner who never risks the lives of his men, unless it is absolutely necessary. All his care, however, hides a deeply insecure nature. Optimus Prime actually put Silverbolt in such a stressful position largely to district him from a paralyzing fear of heights; a weakness he hopes the other Aerialbots never discover. | | | | Silverbolt Review | -Submitted by: Sol Fury | Overall Score: 8 I was extremely privileged to be able to take a look at Universe Silverbolt at TFCon Toronto. These are my first impressions of this update to the Aerialbot commander with the fear of heights.
Vehicle mode - Silverbolt is no longer a concord but an advanced military jet, although the overall feel of the jet mode still evokes his original form. It's a pretty fun jet, different to the usual kinds of jets and planes that we have in the Transformers line, feeling advanced but not overly futuristic. The body of the robot is folded up underneath the jet, although it does a fair job of disguising itself.
As an Ultra, Silverbolt has SFX - whooshing engines activated by a button on his back, with the engines glowing at the same time. It's pretty cool.
Transformation - Silverbolt's transformation is logical, with no real surprises. The nosecone folds up, the legs and arms fold out and the intakes become the fists, then the head is revealed when you push the lower body up into the robot chest. A very cool sound effect is played when the robot head pops up - the classic Generation 1 transforming sound! A different version of the sound plays when you transform Silverbolt back into his jet mode. It's very cool and completely natural, and even enhances the experience of transforming the toy - come on, you know you've made the sound effect yourself at least once when you've transformed a TF, right? Right?
Silverbolt's eyes also flash when you put him in robot mode, another fun touch. His eyes are green, a unique choice.
Robot mode - The robot mode is very much the Silverbolt of old. The design and styling is a perfect match to the original, right down to the golden shins. He is very poseable and quite easy to balance, and can strike some nice, dynamic poses. The SFX are all present and correct in robot mode too. Silverbolt's gun is fun - it is an update of his original gun, although now it is also a missile launcher.
Overall, Silverbolt is good toy who looks great in both modes, an excellent update of the original toy who retains many of the features that made the original such a distinct character. His SFX work well with the toy - whooshing engines for when he is in jet mode and the classic transforming sounds playing as you put him into robot or jet mode. His transformation is not the most original or complicated ever devised, and he does suffer from the flaw that some jet transformers have of having their jet mode on their back as a backpack. However, for Silverbolt, this is a part of the homage, as the original also wore the jet on his back.
Recommended, just make sure you don't put him on a shelf that is too high up - he still hates heights! | | | Additional Silverbolt Resources | | Notes
