Those defying him are likely to experience the searing heat of his stellar plasma breath, or the bite of his axe as their final sensation before their spark is extinguished. Scourge Review

-Submitted by: Omegus Prime

I admit to being a bigger fan of vehicle transformers over animals, but I do have a soft spot for dragons. I didn't know about Deathsaurus until I had the Internet, but since Transmetal 2 Megatron I seem to pick up dragons as often as possible. Their numbers are kept low and only for important Predacons and Decepticons, and the newest comes to us as Scourge, leader of Jungle Planet.

Beast Mode
As stated before, Scourge is a dragon in beast mode, specifically a wingless land dragon. He's packing a wide range of colors, all used about evenly, including dark yellow, orange, and dark grey. Red, silver, and purple are bit players. The colors are very well controlled and balanced, with the yellow and orange giving the impression of flames and heat, perfect for this beast mode. The grey tones it down nicely, keeping him from being tacky or obnoxious. Purple is airbrushed nicely on the three horns from his front legs and top of the tail while silver is used on the head, shoulder, and airbrushed onto the claws of his feet. The way they're all mixed breaks up the solid colors just right to keep the areas different without getting too busy.

Detail-wise, this dragon is loaded. The head features two sets of horns, a lower red set and an upper orange, as well as a clear purple crystal on top with silver detailing around it. While it looks rather organic, the color patterns and lines still maintain enough mechanical look to them. This pattern holds true as you look at the rest of the form. The neck has layers like scales on top while the sides and bottom is detailed with various mechanical components and cables that resemble muscle patterns. Those patterns continue to the legs where the multiple layers and muscle shapes are seen again. The back is relatively smooth until it hits the all-mechanical key slot, then varies again as it goes into the tail, the top looking organic while the rest is molded in segments with mechanical detailing. The look is capped off by the upper legs which have what look like wings molded onto the spikes in front and back, but are too small to function.

Function-wise, Scourge has 13 points of articultion, including two at his tail's midpoint, as well as a jaw that can open and close. He can get into some very nice poses with this. Scourge is also electronic and feautres lights and sounds. Pressing the yellow button on his back gives you a very well done mechanical roar, not distorted or unfit like most of Hasbro's sound gimmicks. It also activates a light in the purple crystal as well as the red eyes and mouth, finishing a very nice electronic gimmick.

As the biggest beast in Cybertron, Scourge makes a fantastic dragon in all aspects, easily one of the best dragons ever.

Robot Mode
Scourge follows the normal beast pattern of the front legs becoming the arms, rear legs becoming the robot legs. That also means not much new detail is brought up, but the mode uses the beast parts very well.

The colors remain the same, though more grey is visible now and it's now unified with the parts moved together. A bit more solver can be seen breaking up the grey and the orange a yellow blends are more visible here, as well, again giving him the look of heat and flames. The only new colors are a dark purple for the face and green for eyes, but it's not a color scheme to be messed with.

While colors are great, it's the details that are outstanding. The dragon's head is now the chest, meaning the purple crystal and the four horns make up his chest plate, which looks very cool and vicious. The long horns/wings on his beast shoulders are now sticking outward, making him very wide and extremely intimidating, which is only aided by the spikes and claws on his arms. The legs are strong and well proportioned, the best mode claws now his feet which continues his primal look. The head sculpt is very nice, complete with fangs and sharp-edged helmet. Besides the fists, the only new part is the midsection piece that looks like the belt a japanese warrior would wear, a nice touch.

Scourge loses a bit of articulation, now with 11 points. This is the toy's only flaw as his arms cant bend at the elbows and keep the fist holes pointed upward at the same time, which keeps him from holding his weapon in as many ways as he could, but he can still do some nice poses. As for the weapon, his entire tail section can become a very big battle axe, a great weapon for adding even more indimidation and power to the mode.

Scourge is just as good as a robot as he is a dragon, a very nice job by Takara and Hasbro.

Planet Key
Scourge comes with a gold Jungle Planet key, proof of his leadership over the world. Inserting it into the chip slot on his back in either mode will make two smaller dragon heads flip up. This also activates the G1 transformation sound, always a huge plus. It also changes the button's sound from a roar to laser fire so you get a lot out of one gimmick. While the heads look okay for adding to the robot mode, it's simply awesome in beast mode and is probably my favorite chip gimmick.

Changes
Now in my Cybertron reviews I do these sections to cover the changes for the toy from Galaxy Force to Cybertron, and this is where I would compare Scouge to Flame Convoy... but I'm proud to say, as much as I look, I can't find any differences. Scourge is perfect to his japanese counterpart in color and form, which the toy certainly deserves to be kept intact.

Overall
Scourge is one of the best figures in Cybertron's first wave. Beast mode, robot mode, and gimmicks are all great, and with no change from Flame Convoy, no reason to pay import prices. A must have for anyone.

I've been procrastinating on these reviews lately and I do apologize... I've gotten many new figures since the last review I did so there's plenty to cover... With that in mind, I will begin anew with Flame Convoy, which I got today...

----------

Galaxy Force: Flame Convoy

Flame Convoy is a beastie from the planet of Animatros... Apparently he's the biggest baddest mofo there...

Upon opening the box, you will receive his gold-lined, green Animatros Force Chip along with his tail axe and the figure itself in robot mode...

Robot Mode:

His robot mode is a mighty big one... He's roughly the same height as Vector Prime, which is probably in the area of a mega sized figure... His shoulder spikes make him taller and wider though... He's VERY imposing... I heard somewhere that might is right on Animatros and this guy must be the biggest badass on the planet... The organic detailing on him is beautiful... I was never one to really like beasties, but this guy is making me think otherwise... He's just beautiful and full of spikes everywhere... He's also go what looks like a tribal skirt of sorts covering the front of his crotch area, furthering the nature/animal/tribal theme...

Flame Convoy's primary colors are orange, red, gold, dark gray, and a little purple here and there... His face is purple with green eyes and his shoulder spikes are tipped in purple as well...

The only translucent plastic on him that I see are on the top of the dragon head which forms his chest and the dragon head's eyes, which are purple... There's a small gold button on his back and when you push it, you hear what appears to be a dragon roaring and the translucent parts flash with lights... There's more on that later...

For his weapon, he wields a giant axe, which also doubles as his tail in dragon mode... There's a blade part as well as a spike at the end... The axe/tail has a joint about halfway along the weapon... That joint allows you to pivot or bend the axe/tail... It is definitely a fearful looking weapon... I can just see a small child sticking the spiked end in his/her eye and causing damage... But the weapon is very fitting of Flame Convoy... No guns, no missiles, no frills... Just a weapon to beat you into a bloody pulp with... Very fitting indeed...

The Force Chip port is located on the back of Flame Convoy, where his butt would be... When you activate it, two smaller dragon heads swing up and over his shoulders from behind... It also makes the traditional transforming sound when you activate the Force Chip, as well as the translucent parts flashing with lights... Unfortunately, the heads end up facing up... You'll have to physically ratchet them down to the forward position... The two smaller heads have working jaws but they will always go back to the open position... I like the detailing of the eyes on the small dragon heads... They're colorer purple and when you close the mouths, their irises disappear...

If you press the gold button on the back with the Force Chip activated, you'll hear laser fire... Where that laser fire would come from is up to your imagination... Maybe someone who's seen the cartoon can help with that, but I suspect that the small dragon heads are capable of shooting lasers out their mouths or eyes or something... Oh, and the translucent parts flash with lights again...

Transformation:

Remove his axe and Force Chip and swing the smaller dragon heads back...

Rotate his head so if faces the back and fold it downwards... Flip the main dragon head up from his chest and backwards... Flip the tabs from his tribal loincloth downwards and then flip the entire thing up... This becomes the dragon's chest...

Rotate his arms so they're facing forwards... Pivot the shoulders back so the spikes are flush with his body... Open up the tabs on his lower arms and flip his fists inside... This also swings the claws of the dragon's front feet around... Close the lower arm tabs...

Grab a hold of his hips and pull away from his body... His legs should slide out... Flip down his ankle parts and rotate the legs down...

Lastly, take the axe and rotate the blade around so it's on the other side of the handle... This action automatically swings the spike into its final resting place as well... Attach the tail to the dragon and you're done!!!

Dragon Mode:

Flame Convoy is BEAUTIFUL as a dragon... It doesn't look like this dragon has wings though... He looks very ferocious and the horned crests on his head add to his overall beauty... His shoulder spikes are done just right...

The only gripe I would have about this mode is his tail... While it does have a rotating and pivoting joint, it still looks rather stiff... Compared to the organic looking curviness of the rest of his body, his tail does look a little out of place...

Hitting the small gold button will cause him to roar and his head and eyes to flash with lights... But now that you have him in dragon mode, you can actually open the main dragon head's mouth which reveals rows of teeth... And when the lights flash, you can see his throat light up...

His Force Chip port is now on the back of the dragon... When you activate it, the two smaller dragon heads swing up and over and once again, flashing lights and the traditional transformation sound... The two heads end up below the main dragon head to form a three headed dragon... VERY nice touch... I love it!!!

If you hit the gold button at this point, you get flashing lights and the laser fire sound...

His points of articulation are as follows:

Dragon Mode:

Head rotates: negative
Head pivots: to a certain degree...
Shoulders rotate: check
Shoulders pivot: negative
Elbows pivot: check

Hands rotate: negative
Waist rotate: negative
Hips rotate: check

Knees pivot: check

----------

Okay... If you base your purchases on looks only, you'll probably LOVE this guy... But if you're an articulation buff, this guy's a nightmare... What're the problems with articulation??? Here's a list:

-The dragon head doesn't rotate in dragon mode, neither to the smaller heads...

-The tail is stiff as a bat which is good in axe mode, HORRIBLE in tail mode...

-In dragon form, his limb articulation is okay...

-In robot form, his entire upper body is a snafu...

-We've all heard about the wrist and it still confounds me on the design of it... There has GOT to be a way to design it where you don't have to lock the wrists in the forward position... For those who haven't heard, if you bend the elbows, the fist holes face to the side, not up like normal figures do... It is a HUGE design flaw... HUGE!!! And there's no way to go around it either...

So to close this review, I must say that this is the second leader of a planet to fall short, with Nitro Convoy being the first... I have yet to review him though but I'll keep you posted on that... At least Flame Convoy looks great... If he didn't have that going for him, I would've been PISSED that I dropped $45 on him... That whole wrist thing is just a travesty... So if you do want him, I'd suggest waiting for the cheaper Cybertron alternative... But since I've already started on GF, it looks like I'll be sticking to my guns...

Unlocked information from http://www.transformers.com:
In Japan, all the planet leaders have a similar name. The Japanese leader Transformers all have the same “last name” and that name is “Convoy”. So, Optimus prime in Japan is called Galaxy Convoy! Pretty cool, right? Well, Scourge, since he’s a dragon is named Flame Convoy.
