Cartoon Overview Blackarachnia is considered a freak by the other Decepticons, and is not well-liked for her personality either, if her brief conversation with Blitzwing in the pilot is anything to go by. "Once again, Blackarachnia, your words are as unwelcome as your accursed organic form." She was once the Autobot, Elita-1, who was left behind and thought dead by Optimus Prime, after an explosion of Energon cubes in a spider's nest caused him to lose track of her energy signature. In fact, to survive, Elita tried to absorb the abilities of the spiders, which caused her to mutate into her organic form which also masked her energy signature. She hates all Autobots for what happened, especially Optimus. Her main interest is in purging her organic half by any means necessary, and when she tried with Sari's key, she revealed its potential destructive power. However, as it turns out, she cannot exist without her organic half.
Even after she learned this, Blackarachnia refuses to accept it and still believes that the power of the Allspark is the key to restoring her to her original form. In Megatron Rising, she kidnapped Sari in an attempt to gain the Key, but by this time, Sari had already had it taken from her. With Sari in tow, Blackarachnia made her way to a frozen Lake Erie, with Sari gambling that Blackarachnia's organic components meant she could drown if she tried to get to the ship. The gamble paid off, and when Ratchet launched the Ark, Blackarachnia was caught off guard enough for Ratchet to rescue Sari. Blackarachnia fell off of the Ark when Ratchet activated the thrusters and accelerated.
Blackarachnia washed ashore on Dinobot Island some time after this and was taken in by the Dinobots, who worshiped her. The Dinobots took Blackarachnia to Meltdown's lab on the island, where she learned of Meltdown's attempt to create an organic Transformer. In the episode Black Friday (where this was all shown as a flashback) Blackarachnia had the Dinobots break Meltdown out of prison. When Bumblebee, Prowl and Optimus Prime arrived on the island to investigate, Blackarachnia injected both Prowl and Bumblebee with an extra dose of her venom, threatening they would go offline in two Megacycles without an antidote. Reluctantly Optimus complied and fetched a component Meltdown needed to perform his procedure on Blackarachnia. But there was a further double cross - hating machines, Meltdown intended to transform Blackarachnia into a fully organic being! Fortunately, Optimus saved Blackarachnia and put an end to Meltdown. Blackarachnia used her wiles, pretending to embrace Optimus, to make Grimlock mad with jealousy and attack Optimus and make good her escape. However, when Optimus returned to Bumblebee and Prowl, he found the antidote lying disguarded nearby, making him think there might be some shred of goodness left in Blackarachnia after all.
Blackarachnia reappears in "Predacons Rising". Still commanding the loyalty of the Dinobots, she has Swoop capture Wasp, although any Cybertronian would likely have suited her plans. She talked Wasp into going through a dangerous Transwarp experiment promising that it would make him more powerful, although her true intention was to turn him technorganic like herself, so that she could experiment on him and find a way to revert him back to normal Wasp, in order that she could cure herself of her own technorganic state. If he died, well, better him than herself.
Naturally, Wasp (now Waspinator) was not pleased when he found out. Neither was Sentinel Prime, when he discovered that Blackarachnia was actually Elita-1, and that she blamed him as much as Optimus for her current state. Sentinel did not help matters by denying that she was Elita, and saying that Elita was dead to him. Although it greatly pained him, he vowed to put an end to both Blackarachnia and Waspinator. But Blackarachnia was too strong for Sentinel, and she started to drain him, but not after Blackarachnia's true, mutated face was revealed (see images).
Blackarachnia's drain of Sentinel Prime was interrupted by the arrival of Optimus Prime, and then Waspinator malfunctioned, thanks to a problem with his Transwarp mutation. Blackarachnia fled, flattening Bumblebee along the way, before making a shock heel face turn and saving Sentinel, Optimus and the rest from Waspinator's Transwarp explosion. Perhaps it was goodness within her, or perhaps she was just saving her best chance and becoming "normal" again. Either way, Blackarachnia survived, teleported to another, far off place. Looking up, she saw a rhino, an ape, an unusually large rat and a cheetah, and commented "you have GOT to be kidding me."
Powers and Abilities
Blackarachnia is physically one of the weaker Decepticons encountered in the series, possibly due to her Autobot origins. However, she possesses above average agility even for a Decepticon. He shoulder mounted spider legs can deliver Cybervenom stings to her enemies, and she can also use these legs to simultaneously download the abilities of her enemies.
Blackarachnia is also extremely intelligent in the field of genetics and technorganics, as a direct result of her attempts at finding a cure for her condition.

IDW Overview

Before she arrived on Earth, Blackarachnia approached Starscream and asked him if he wanted to team up. Starscream's response was to throw Blackarachnia out of the Nemesis' airlock. Adrift, Blackarachnia makes it to Earth's moon, where she senses the Allspark's power being released as Optimus Prime and Starscream battle.
Blackarachnia is still on Earth's moon when Lockdown arrives in search of the Autobots who defeated Megatron. Blackarachnia learns from Lockdown that it was indeed Optimus who defeated Megatron (and she was surprised and a little bitter that he'd made the rank of Prime, despite leaving her behind). Blackarachnia ended up getting into a fight with Lockdown. She feigned defeat, then when Lockdown gloated, Blackarachnia knocked him unconcious using her cyber venom, absorbing several of his upgrades in the process. This proved too much, and Blackarachnia herself blacked out.
After Lockdown arrived on Earth, it is revealed that Blackarachnia had awoken before he did and stowed away on his ship. She set out in search of Optimus Prime, briefly considering warning him about Lockdown before dismissing the idea. If she warned Optimus about Lockdown, who would warn him about her?
(Contrary to her depiction in the TV series which suggests Blackarachnia needs to breath, in the comic, Blackarachnia's helmet contains a faceplate that allows her to breath in space. Even more confusingly, Blackarachnia seems perfectly able to breath on Earth's moon even without the faceplate. Perhaps Blackarachnia does not need to breath, but was simply angry at being tricked by Sari in Megatron Rising.)

Notes
In Transformers Animated: The Arrival #4, Blackarachnia's pose on the final page of the issue is a homage to Marvel Comic's Spider-Man.
The animals that Blackarachnia sees at the end of "Predacons Rising" are homages to the original Beast Wars cast - Rhinox, Rattrap, Cheetor and Optimus Primal.
Original Cartoon Network Press Release Bio
BLACKARACHNIA is a freak among DECEPTICONS. Some time back, an encounter with the ALLSPARK caused her to fuse with an organic spider, turning her into a techno-organic hybrid of animal and machine. She despises this new form, especially on Earth, where her giant spider mode doesn’t exactly allow her to “blend.” BLACKARACHNIA will do anything to find a cure for her condition and doesn’t care who she has to step on to get it. Obviously the ALLSPARK and its Autobot protectors will play a big role in her schemes.
Robot Mode Power: BLACKARACHNIA has multiple eyes and eight limbs – two of which are skinny, pincer-like “spider limbs” that jut from her back and arc over her shoulders. The pincer limbs can strike like scorpions’ tails, stunning prey with her venom, or spraying spider-like webs. She also has the ability to download and temporarily absorb other Cybertronians’ powers.
Vehicle Mode Appearance: BLACKARACHNIA has no vehicle mode appearance. Instead she changes into a giant techno-organic black widow spider.
