Cartoon Overview
Ultra Magnus is the supreme commander of the Autobots. He's old, a veteran of the wars like Ratchet, and perhaps slightly idealistic - he believes that the Decepticons no longer pose a threat and that they would never dare to venture into Autobot space again, as of the start of the first episode.

In Thrill of the Hunt, we learn that Ultra Magnus was a high ranking commander during the Great War, possibly even the supreme commander back then too. He ordered Ratchet to find and rescue an Autobot Intelligence Officer, Arcee.

Ultra Magnus personally arrives on Earth in The Elite Guard, where he is all-business, wanting to complete the mission and return to Cybertron as soon as possible. He is skeptical of Optimus' story of the Allspark being shattered, and asks to visit the Autobot ship, which had crash landed on Dinobot Island. There, he encountered the Dinobots, who he drove away by calling down lightning from the sky. Later, at one of Sumdac's autotronic plants where the robots coming off the assembly line were running amok, Ultra Magnus again called down lightning to disable the entire battlefield full of enemies in a single attack.
Ultra Magnus also demonstrates his leadership capabilities by recognizing the good qualities in Optimus Prime, even though as he says he is "rough around the edges", and in reprimanding Sentinel Prime over his overbearing attitude. Ultra Magnus does not seem to be flawless, though, since he makes little effort to interact with the native lifeforms of the planet he has arrived on - instead, he seems to be purely focused on getting the job done and then leaving.

Ultra Magnus did not believe the reports of Decepticons on Earth, and throughout the duration of his stay, he found no proof. With Decepticon attacks erupting along the rim of the galaxy due to reports of Megatron's return, Ultra Magnus decided to return to Cybertron, and take Optimus Prime and his team with him. However, when Starscream appeared, Ultra Magnus was convinced enough to leave Optimus and his team on Earth, and task them with the mission of apprehending whatever other Decepticons they should find.

In A Fistful of Energon Starscream escapes from Ultra Magnus and sets off to get revenge on Megatron, leaving the Elite Guard ship damaged. Ultra Magnus contacts Optimus to inform him and the other Autobots of the situation.

Powers and Abilities: Ultra Magnus' hammer, which he is never seen without, can cause storms and summon down lightning bolts from the sky which Ultra Magnus can direct against his enemies.
