Transformers Generation 1 (G1) Starscream (original and reissue) review

Original price: $11.87 (the price tag came off my original G1 MIB Skywarp. Couldn?t find a pricetag on Starscream?s.)

When Transformers originally came out, Starscream was the only one I really wanted. I loved the character right down to his high-pitched easily recognizable voice and treacherous nature. I can?t say why I was so drawn to him but sadly I never got one back then. I had to play with what my brother got. But over the past few years I have over-compensated with all the different versions of Starscream there is out there.

Robot mode

Sure compared to today?s Starscream, not much on possibility. His arms move and his wings can ?flex? but that is all on movement. Also his transformation isn?t the most difficult especially compared to today?s Transformers. Doesn?t mean the playability doesn?t exist. But this is the toy that started it all and you got to love him for that.
Starscream doesn?t differ in mold from Skywarp and Thundercracker except that each of them had distinguishing colors to tell them apart and also that in the show, it showed different aspects of each of them which I loved so that each was an individual.
Also Starscream came with a sticker sheet. I have never applied the reissue stickers but I did look at the eye stickers and I think those would be heck to try and put on. Oh I should note that I have original and reissue among my collection of Starscreams.

Jet mode

To transform, Starscream into jet mode you had to remove his fists, wings and weapons which made it easy to loose this items. Lucky we now have reissues of the toys so we now can buy a toy with all parts.
Starscream?s mode is accurate to what a real military plane looks like.

Weapons

Starscream has two rifles that fit on his arms for robot mode and also on his wings when he is in jet mode. He also has four missiles. Two are short and look good when he is in jet mode. The other two are long and look good and ?show accurate? in robot mode.
Starscream also has a ?balance wheel? for lack of better name for it. Real planes have it when they are on the ground and it can be used to help display Starscream better when he is in jet mold.
Two extra accessories that came with Takara reissue Starscream was a Megatron gun that can be held in one specially made fist and a DVD. I cannot play it due to region but I heard there are Transformer commercials on it.

To transform from jet to robot

1) Remove wings.
2) Push feet down.
3) In middle of body with Starscream?s face looking at you, push down on arms. Move each arm separately into place.
4) Gently push cone part forward. Pull down and rotate until the cockpit is in torso.
5) Pull cone back to reveal face and put head in place.
6) Add on fists and wings to complete.


Final Word

Despite all his different incarnations, Starscream has remained the same Decepticon that is still loved today. The cost of the original can vary to dealer and condition and how many parts he has with him. The reissues and Commeratives have helped people get a Starscream in wonderful mint shape with all parts at a nice price. But some of the reissues differ. Last Takara issue Starscream first off has a slightly differently color. He?s still his same colors but the white is more gray. Also the words in his leg say ?Hasbro 2002 Takara CO LTD 2002 China?.
So even if you can?t find an original, the reissues help put you in touch with the one you love from when you were a kid so for once you have that toy you have always wanted.
