We used to do that, including the self-enforced time limit, and we found that when we got into a particular topic more in depth than we expected, we either had to cut the good discussion short, or fly through other topics as fast as possible to the point of there being no point in covering it. To be honest, when an unusually long WTF ep comes out, we get far more "Yay, a long episode!" posts than "Damn it, this is long..." posts.

The reason we went to the format we use now is because 1) a lot of new listeners couldn't tell the hosts apart, and 2), it cut out the awkward silence of deciding who was going to go first and all the talking over each other during that.

Podcasts like CNet and TWiT benefit from having their hosts either in the same room, or often in a video chat during the recording. Things like being able to read facial cues goes a long way in having open floor discussion. You can probably tell the difference when listing to our Botcon episodes while we're all together. Podcasts like Giant Bomb, who record in the same room, refuse to have someone on the show unless they are in the room as well to avoid those issues.

I totally agree we could improve on trimming fat in certain places. Spending 15 minutes talking about Rock Band is a little much in my opinion. When I bring up something off topic, I try to breeze through it versus going more in depth with on topic TF discussions. And that's not a dig at Aaron, we all do it.

In regards to length (still havnet figured out why it hasn't shown up in iTunes) all the critiques/complaining seems kind of pointless. I mean, I'm sure it's important for the refinement of the podcast process, but no one is making you listen to it. Don't get me wrong, 3+ hours is sone time, but if you really want to listen to it then break it up. After all, everyone on the podcast takes time out of their week/lives to record this podcast. Not to mention vangelus' editing. Plus, it's not like they are getting paid for this. Putting a limit on time cuts off the flow of everyones discussion. I'm sure everyone, if not just one person would feel pressed for time and rush things, ruining the flow if the show. It's out of their own will they do it, and out if their own will the length. I dunno, this is just my opinion, but it just seems like hate on the podcasters day.

Bottom line, it's an awesome podcast. If it's too long for your taste, then listen to part if it. Don't have them change the way the do things just for your convinience. Just my two cents. :D

I also never want to give the impression that we don't listen to critical feedback, but every time we get a series of complaints, and ask about the alternatives, most of the time the response is in the realm of around 75% + saying please don't change it. :lol

I agree with Gog - when there's such a glut of TF stuff coming out, let's keep it on topic guys...listening about Rock Band as I type and I've totally zoned out several times. Great for those who like it, but again, there's lots of TF stuff that I think should take precedence.

As I see it, it's great entertainment and it's FREE (a word all TF collectors should be able to appreciate) and so, when we get even more than we normally do, I consider it a treat! Even the off-topic stuff is fine, in my opinion, as it's usual interesting to people in our circles (geeks/nerds etc).

Keep up the good work, dudes. And two thumbs up for regular Protoman appearances!

This does make me curious, so to all the "longer longer longer!" folks, a question- do you listen to other podcasts or is this one pretty much it for the week?

That's funny, this is one of the shows where I never really had trouble telling you guys apart. You're all pretty distinctive speakers to my ears. There's a 3-man WoW show I listen two and two of the guys sound so similar I still can't tell them apart even after 2 years of listening.

That's a good point. I just listen to the audio downloads of those shows so I don't see them in the video taking cues from each other and such. Most of you have Iphones, right? Just use Facetime! :p

WTF@TFW, half the calories, same great taste!

Different format dude. Makes all the difference.

I, too, don't mind the length. Yeah, there were parts like the whole Rock Band/360 story that could have been cut down, but there are also parts like Protoman's brilliant answer to the oversaturation question that you need to keep whole.

Basically, the guys do what they can to get everything they want to say in as short a monologue as possible. Sometimes they get sidetracked. So even though some of the OT stuff can go a little long here and there, it's a good change of pace and, as someone who collects lines other then Transformers, I appreciate the opinions on non-TF items I'm looking to get or already own.

    ---

To go back to the oversaturation topic, I completely agree with you, Protoman. There are plenty out there that don't understand that its thanks to the movie's success that we're getting what we are now. We aren't getting half-assed repaints, we're getting remolds. We're seeing updated versions of characters we have not seen in years and it thanks to the huge profits that Hasbro's been getting with movie-centric sales.

So when I see people going so far as to say "DA MOVIES IZ DE WORSTEST TING TO HAPPN 2 TRANSFORMERZ!", it kind of annoys me because without the movies, no one would be raving about how awesome RtS Jazz is or how great it is to see Straxus get his very first toy.

I like the podcast long, it's only when it's the supplementals like the book club that I find it difficult to listen in one go.

Oho, a long one, goody. I love long WWGTW sections. The plus side to the length of this is that when I do some Item World diving in Disgaea, I'll have something to keep me entertained.

    I listen to this
Henshin Justice which can go from 2-4 hours depending
A 3 times a week Wrestling Podcast that goes about 2 and a half hours each episode.
Canadian Slag which can go about 2 hours.

That's anywhere from 12 to 18 hours of audio content a week. I'm more curious to what exactly you do with your 168 hour week that 4 hours seems like such a chore. Maybe you work somewhere silly that wont allow you to listen to audio while youre at work, in that case, find a less silly job :p

I only listen to the RoosterTeeth Drunk Tank, which runs for usually an hour at most.

Though even with an additional 5 podcast, I don't really see how a 3 hour and 45 minute podcast (Yep, I went there) can take up an 8 hour work day or a 40 hour work week unless you're only able to use an MP3, computer or smartphone player for a limited time a day.

i just want to make a comment about the second listener question:I got a deal on a fort max body for $7 at a flea market, it is missing mainly cerebros, the ramps, the radar dish, both main guns, the mini robot (name escapes me right now), and a waist gun, it did come with spike and all the other body guns and covers

now, just trying to get my hands on a cerebros has become an impossible task, cause they always go into the $130 range now and it sucks....one day though i will get one

now i have tried the pieceing of a g1 toy before, a g1 menasor, i bought a g1 wildrider with no accessories for $4 from TJOmega, so i decided slowly but surely i have gotten all 5 stunticons, just no combiner bits, right now i am pieceing it together for fun, i am in no hurry whatsoever to get the rest of the parts

too comment about the lenght, this is the only podcast i listen to, so the longer the episode, the better, i listen to them while in bed with the lights off so it is relaxing, i perfer 3 hour length ones over the old 1 hour, it just less rushed

Yoh, quick request- Please don't come down on a dude for writing a lengthy reply to my own lengthy post, that's not really fair y'know. ;)

Gog covered our discussion formatting reasons quite well- we lack the advantage of all being in the same room. Even if we were to somehow set up a videochat too (which I personally don't care for all that much), I think picture delay would rob us of a lot of the advantages for visual cues it might have offered. The board-ish approach helps avoid having other hosts try to figure out who speaks first, which saves me from later needin to trim up convo openings for my own satsfaction. I would love for things to sound even more organic, but accounting for other factors (we have many times had listeners wanting more clarification on who is who :lol  ) has brought our process to where it is right now.

Tightening things during a recording happens pretty often nowadays compared to before, things just slip offcourse now and then. One reason why I don't see a long WWGTW in a late December recording as a reason to re-evaluate most of our approaches in that part of the podcast is because we're weekly. It happens one recording, and 7 days later it might go completely differently. When a production is weekly, that gives it more room for smaller faux pas, IMO. :D

Just my thoughts on Tj favoring Skullgrin, I do as well 'cuz he reminds more of a gorey 80's monster toy like inhumanoids, and I'm a monster-man. Especially when you pop open the slate grey tank and all that red comes gushing out at you.

also just got HA Jazz. He's carrying duhammamammmal by the head like a lunchbox.
