Haven't heard the episode yet but seeing Maetal on the front means Galaxy Express 999...which means Astrotrain...damn I need to buy that Conductor costume...
Even though Beast Wars/Machines was my first TF show, Armada WAS the show that started my collecting. And there ARE several figures from the line I never got (Starscream was the one I wanted most), and I've seen them online for cheap, but I feel unsure about getting them, mostly because I wanna see if they're good toys, not because of my nostalgia. Like, I'll probably never get Sideswipe or Scavenger, just because they don't look all that good. But I WOULD love newer toys of the characters though; Generations Armada Starscream is probably my favorite TF ever, and I did get Leader Armada Megatron over the G1 version. I would love a new Armada Jetfire, or Demolisher, or Blurr, or anyone, really. And I'm glad Vangelus mentioned Sideways for Titans Return, because that was my first thought after seeing the toys.
When I was younger, I remember being very hooked on Pirate Captain Harlock which I never knew was connected to Galaxy Express 999 until much later in my adulthood. I recently watched the remake of Space Battleship Yamato and it was pretty damn good.
I actually like the number of figures Funpub puts out every year (usually about 23 between botcon, incentive, clubstore, and fss). there's a lot of stuff hasbro wont touch anytime soon, and the only way we'd get them is through Funpub. Would hasbro modify a 10 year old toy to accommodate a 25 year old Headmaster? would Hasbro make a new Pretender shell in 2015? would hasbro even acknowledge the existence of Machine Wars? no. but Funpub do. my concern is that Botcon's replacement will just do what hasbro does at SDCC, fancy shiny chrome versions of characters we already have. I like the Botcon exclusives for the characters they homage. I dont want a shiny Trypticon with Chrome in 2017. I want obscure characters like Guiltaur, Rosanna, and Violen Jiger (retools of energon landmine, united rumble, and bw tripredacus)
Hate to say it, but going by stuff like MLP if Hasbro is behind the exclusive toys for the fan convention, it probably won't be a new toy done like you get at SDCC but rather the exact same toy or sets that they will make for SDCC. Which on one hand will make the expensive aftermarket SDCC exclusives a little easier to obtain, but on the other hand the chances of getting new figures of obscure characters that FunPub usually makes completely impossible.
This. For all of FunPub's faults? They at least tried to be creative with their exclusives. Maybe it didn't always pan out, but there was effort to give the fans something that Hasbro would never do. Now maybe Hasbro will take this approach if/when hey run things themselves. I hope they do. Their track record, however, isn't inspiring.
