I have a similar setup (i5-2500K @ 4.0GHz, HD6870, 16GB DDR3). Yours is keeping up pretty well? I'm starting to get the upgrade itch and trying to figure out if it's even worth it. My monitor maxes out @ 1080p.

For that matter I don't even know why I'm thinking of it, I haven't even beaten Half Life 2 or Fallout 3 yet, LOL. :D

I'm getting the itch too, especially since the HD7970 is on sale for $319 at the moment, but unless I also had a few thousand to blow on new IPS monitors that do higher resolutions than 1920x1080, I can't look my wife in the eye and say "I need to spend money on this".

I seem to be having some trouble with my computer lately, as it tends to freeze at random. It all started after I downloaded the ASUS Live Update for my computer that I've neglected to do since I got it two years ago. Here are the tech specs for my computer:

    -ASUS G74SX-XR1 Laptop
    -Intel Core i7 2630QM, 2.0 GHz
    -12GB DDR3 RAM
    -640GB 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
    -17.3" Full HD Screen
    -NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 3GB
    -DirectX 11
    -Backlit Keyboard
-Easy access cover on the underside for upgrading
    -Windows 7 64-Bit

Not only that, but I've also gotten Windows Updates that failed to configure and install, and it's been like this for a few days. I've tried System Restore, I've tried McAfee, I've tried Crap Cleaner, I've tried removing programs that I don't use, and so far I've had no luck. Can anyone help me with this? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Sounds like you need a format. Copy all important data to a usb/external hdd and format your laptop with recovery disk/partition that you should have got with your laptop. If that doesn't help, then you might have hardware issues, possibly cpu or gpu overheating.

McAfee's not that great. Try Avast.

Might also download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. When you do Crap Cleaner are you having it fix registry problems also?

    Yes, I do.

And I will take opt1musaber's advice on reformatting the computer. I've got all my important stuff backed up onto an external hard drive, so I shouldn't have too much problems.

EDIT: I HAVE FIXED MY COMPUTER! :D  Here's why: I figured the reason my computer was freezing up was because of the updates. So, I removed all the drivers and utilities, used the CD that came with my computer, and reinstalled the old versions of said drivers and utilities. Everything's running fine now. :)

EDIT 2: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it froze on me again. I thought things were fixed, but something's still causing it to happen. The thing is, it freezes when I'm on Firefox.

EDIT 3: OKAY. I think I've got the problem solved. Thanks to Google, it turns out that ASUS wasn't the culprit, but the latest version of the Nvidia driver that I use. For some reason or another, the hardware acceleration caused by the driver will sometimes cause the computer to freeze, especially when using Firefox. I uninstalled the newest driver for the older one some people recommended. I am hoping to God that this is the last problem I have to deal with for my computer. Granted, I've had the dubious fortune of having to get a new computer every few years, but I'm getting sick of it. I may just get a cheap Mac computer for everything else and just let the gaming laptop be...well, my gaming computer.

Bought a second gtx 780 a week ago and let's just say I'm ready for 4k....these cards are beasts and should last me a while :D  I might just get a 1600p monitor with gsync though. I doubt 4k will be standard for many years to come and they are too expensive still. Who is looking into using 4k atm?

I don't really play PC games, more of an old skool console gamer (NES to PS2).

after i finish another project that i posted in a separate thread, might build a rig like this:

RaidMax Smilodon mid tower case containing:
AMD 3.5Ghz (over clocked to 4.1Ghz) 6 Core ATX
    8GB DDR3 1866 RAM.
    GeForce 610 2GB, 64 bit video card
    120GB SSD for OS/primary
    2x- 2TB, 64MB cache hard drive running 7200 RPM.
    Pioneer 15x BDR

i intend to replace the computer i am using now with that and it will be connected to a 55" Sharp LCD 1080p TV.

I just haven't seen any demos for it yet. I'm not too big a stickler for detail, I'm actually pretty happy with the 1080 level. I've thoroughly enjoyed my 120hz tv though so I'm probably going to be in the market for a 120-144hz monitor in the next year. gsync looks amazing but I just don't see the price being warranted for it yet. maybe once they start going into mass production the price will be lower.

but yeah I want to see a native 4k device hooked up to a 4k monitor before I make any decisions. if I went to bestbuy for a demo they'd probably just hook a 1080 output device up to it and say "DOESN'T IT LOOK GREAT BRO?", well maybe but it's just being upscaled. I want to see native 4k output to 4k device for myself in person before I decide if it's something for me or not.

Ye, I'm still happy with 1200p, but some of the comments just from some of the latest IPS or 144hz monitors are really enticing me lol.

The thing that really excites about Gsync is that even when framerates are hovering around 30fps it'll look smooth and crisp without tearing, so that means that gpu's will last considerably longer as you don't require upgrades every few years to be able to run games at 40+. The only problem is I will probably have to wait a year or so for these to be available in higher resolutions...

I saw a proper Sony 60" 4k demo setup last week and it looked awesome, but I definitely came away thinking that its a case of the extra resolution being needed to maintain image clarity on big screens rather then something that's going to be worth the premium at 40" and under once it trickles down that far.

was it at bestbuy or somewhere else? I'd really like to check a demo out sometime. what did they use for an output device to the tv?

I live near a particularly large Currys, which is the big electrical chain over here. It was plugged into a Sony demo box which looked like a hard disk media player of some sort.

They have a Samsung one mounted on a wall as well, but for some reason they just had the smart menus and shit open instead of any actual video.

I can't decide whether to throw down on picking up new case and a few components or picking up the new oculus dev kit. I can resell the devkit near cost before the consumer version hits. Plus I don't want to significantly upgrade until Star Citizen comes around. I do just need a new case to support SLI cards since I accidently mutilated the structure that bolts the graphics card to the back of the case.
