    Final Fantasy VII – 9.5/10

I actually finished my most recent play-through quite some time ago, but I’ve been thinking about this game again today. More specifically, I’ve been trying to pin down what it is about it that makes it hold up so well for me after all these years despite its many flaws.

Is it the story, the characters, the world-building, the music? All of these things are good, even great in some cases, but there have been other games that do these better. (I must note though that the battle, boss battle, and final boss songs were my all time favorites for a LONG time - until Xenoblade 2, to be precise – and the world map music still hasn’t been surpassed except maybe by FFVII Re:Birth, which I haven’t heard yet.)

It’s definitely not the graphics, although those have come to be somewhat underrated. There’s a lot real artistry in some of the pre-rendered backgrounds, including some except use of light, shadow, and color. This becomes especially apparent if you use an HD upscale mod. (If you haven’t tried such a mod, please do so. It makes a HUGE difference).

Nostalgia? Sure, that’s a factor. I won’t deny it. But I think I have just as much nostalgia for FFVI and VIII, and while I love both of those games, they haven’t aged as well as VII, despite being better in some ways and definitely more polished. Nostalgia alone wouldn’t be enough to make me give such a high score to a game that, once again, has many flaws.

In the end, I’m still not sure how best to put it except to say that FFVII is just FUCKING COOL somehow. There’s a certain “x factor” or whatever you wish call it that makes this game so much greater than the sum of its parts. There’s something about this game that just sucks me in from the beginning and doesn’t let go. It’s not my favorite game, nor is it the best Final Fantasy. But in 30+ years of playing videogames, there has never been another game for me that is quite as cool.

There is one thing it does do particularly well that I can mention, and that is the pacing. This game is masterclass in pacing. From the time Aerith stands up and walks out of that alley until the credits role, not once does the story ever drag. Not once does it fail to keep me engaged. The optional parts of the game also don’t overstay their welcome, with the exception of chocobo breeding if you don’t know what you’re doing (the game doesn’t do a good job explaining things on that one). And the length of the game is not too long, not too short, but juuuuust right.

So yeah, it’s still very much worth playing. Yes, Re:Make exists, and although I haven’t yet played it due the lack of a machine that can handle it, I watched some videos and read up on it, and it does seem like something I will enjoy when I have the opportunity. But it’s kind of it’s own thing rather than an actual remake, and thus won’t be able to take the place of the original for me.

Long story short, Final Fantasy VII is a diamond in the rough, but a diamond nonetheless.

But please, PLEASE, for the love of Bahamut, play it with graphics mods.

Issues: server connect problems have been consistent, hopefully that can be patched soon

    Pros: *inhales*
This is the most fun I've had in a game in a long looooooooooong time. The guns are fantastic, if not the best balanced things on the planet. Every one feels so satisfying to shoot, how they recoil and the noises they make just feel sooooo good. And when they impact things... man. Bugs explode into gore and goo and crunch and crackle, it is so satisfying to hit them. But when they hit you, holy shit. You go flying, you get your limps chopped off, you explode into a trillion pieces, it's wonderful.

The stratagems are also gold. Once you unlock the orbital rail cannon and the nuke... there's no going back. There is seriously nothing more satisfying than nuking a bile titan and watching them go up in flames. Getting to drop turrets and mechs are also particularly fun to do. I love watching them tear through hordes of enemies and agh is it fun

The world they have created is also fantastic. It is wickedly satirical and blatantly absurd. But at the same time the propaganda gets to you? Like, fascism is terrible, but at the same time I'm enlisting and glory to Super Earth. I will gladly die for democracy.

I really live every second I'm playing this game. The only issue that really hurts are the servers having seizures every ten minutes. I would love to complete a campaign without having to restart twice and hour. But I have faith that it they will be fixed soon.

    FOR DEMOCRACY

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth 8/10. This one is tough because I enjoyed my time with the game, but the writing is a mess. Ichiban ends up playing second fiddle to Kiryu in his own game and characters just show up for obligatory cameos. LaD was a chance to have a fresh start and they blew it.

Persona 3 Reload 9/10 For me this is the definitive version of "vanilla" P3.
